With no local support, Cynthia Alexander migrates to U.S.
« on: June 14, 2012, 12:58:08 AM »
At the end of the month, singer, songwriter and bass player extraordinaire Cynthia Alexander is leaving the Philippines.

For good.

Cynthia is uprooting herself and her family and migrating to Seattle, Washington.

Her reason?

Career-wise, she has had very limited support.

Or, in her own words: “I am moving away because I refuse to live my life like a frog in a well!”

The best there is

Cynthia’s departure is going to be a big loss to local music. As a bassist, she can out-funk and out-slap a lot of male virtuosos. She was, in fact, honored in the 90s by Japan as one of the best there is.

Armed with Joni Mitchell-inspired open tunings, she has written pop melodies for her poems, and gave us beautiful songs that sound deceptively simple in her lilting voice. But when you try to decipher her complex guitar lines, you wonder if plays with more than 10 fingers.

In fact, Cynthia is a multi-instrumentalist. Hand her a paper bag and she’ll probably find a way to extract jewels of melodies from it.

well this is probably one of the saddest news ive read para sa local music industry.

im a big fan of Cynthia Alexander. and yes, her songwriting is really awesome. i remember creating a thread in another board here stating how i admire her lyrical prowess.

i even imagined her playing live on my wedding..yun eh kung may pera lang ako..

but shes leaving now. i'll still include a song or two on my wedding AVP.

This is sad. Brain drain (in this case, 'talent drain') in the field of music.  :-( :-( :-(

huge, HUGE fan of hers.

used to play Comfort in your Strangeness over and over and over and tried to learn the guitar because i wanted to be exactly like her. i also bought her CDs, which i rarely do.

don't really mind if she moves elsewhere. as long as she still makes music, i'm buying it.

Tomorrow is the start of her 4 "send-off" gigs. The second will be this coming Saturday. The third on the 22nd and lastly on the 23rd.

Nung unang narinig ko to fresh from my newly bought Rippingyarns album, lumuha ako in less than a minute.

Intertwyne:
me & you
whispering of ripplewind
& faerie wing
me & you
undaunted by
our joyful scarring
me & you
of twisting fates
in corridors of time
silence is the fire
that speaks to us in tongues

what is tomorrow
it may never come
what is yesterday
is now done

we always were
we always will
we always are
we always intertwine

me & you
finally
beholden grace
in our eyes
in our hands
unfolding space

Our band had a weekly billing with her band Hayp back in the early days of Kampo. Easily the most amazing bass player I've ever seen live (and I've seen Sting live!). She'd regularly switch guitar duties with Noel Mendez, mid-set. Amazing player.

pustahan tayo mas magkakapangalan pa yung Batang Guitarista na si Luis Galang if he followed Cynthias Strategy...

this is the reality of artistry in our country. Sayang talga at mag migrate na si Cynthia, but if she can make it there, well it's one of the best decisions she will make. Dito sa Pilipinas, eh wala eh madami kasi talaga hindi makaka relate sa Music na Kine-Create ni Cynthia ilang pinoy kaya ang mag idolize sa kanya and will wish to be like her one day? compared to ilang pilipino ang gustong maging ann curtis one day. Cynthia is looks like a beautiful pinay ann curtis is hot and looks like a hollywood artista.I hope mag change na dito sa Philippines soon........eto ang realidad

i cant imagine it to be a loss... i mean, music is global nowadays, and with social media and all, people can check out and buy her new releases.

as for live gigs, there's always youtube. sometimes, i find it more satisfying than going to a gig where you its usually a cramped space and the show is delayed an hour
