OD/Distortion shootout/guessing game

I had time to record my OD and distortion pedals...lahat being equal - same guitar, same setting on the POD(which is on bypass), same riff/solo ... me mga sabit but pagtiyagaan nyo na lang :)

subukan nyo nga hulaan which OD/distortion pedal based on the sound/tone.

eto mga players:

1) Boss DS1
2) modded Boss SD1
3) Bad Monkey
4) Toneblone classic

its 5 tracks, so dalawa ang entry nung isang distortion pedal.
take note din na yung settings was done based on my taste for tone.

I like tracks 4 and 5 equally well - the over drive sounds very natural, with track 3 coming in second. I didn't like 1 and 2 at all; I thought those two tones sounded much too harsh for the smooth overdrive that, I think, it was trying to present.

Same for all too... I used the Les Paul model nung Variax in the bridge position para walang noise.

Man, hindi ko alam kung ano ang mga tumutunog na pedals at the particular time. Gusto ko ang tunog ng 4 & 5. Warm and smooth. Yong first 3 medyo trebly sa akin. Ano yong order ng distortion?

I like 5....all others have that piercing brightness sound.....I don't like that except  when playing in the clean channel only.

would you believe that track 4 is the SD1 and 5 is the bad monkey? my faves.

track 3 is the DS1...ice pick pa rin kahit mababa na yung tone knob.

1&2 is the tonebone - naka set na super high yung gain, flat mid and nakabright yung EQ... i was after the NU Metal distortion. di ko pa explore yung mid at low distortion settings nya...

DS-1 that high-pitched sounding? Hhmm... bakit yong akin naman timpla para warm sound. Ano bang amp and guitar setup mo? Baka don nag katalo.

SD-1 ang 4 ha.... hhmm. Ayos ang tunog. Pero warmest yong Bad MOnkey. Talagang BBAADD ang MONKEY mo pareng SONNY, hehe :lol:

yung bad monkey, great for blues talaga. yung SD1 fave distortion/OD ko..yung DS1 mo di ba me keeley mod yun? hirap talaga ako itimpla yung DS1 e.

Yeah, KEELEY yong DS-1 ko. Napansin ko na ang mga stock DS-1 ay brittle sounding. Kaya mura lang sila. Mas mahal pa ata ang bayad pa mod ng pedal sa actual stock price, e, hehe :lol:

...looks like I've narrowed my selection sa overdrive pedal.....it's between...the Bad Monkey....and the AC Booster....haaaaay....


eto yung clip sa AC booster na naka-attract sa akin.....the guy used it as a gain boost....with a humbucker p/u....like my situation.

sonny, how did u record the badmonkey.. sa mixer out ba? iba kasi tunog nya compared sa line out e..  :)

ang ganda pala ng tunog ng SD1... galit yung tunog ng Tonebone dude hehe! pareng SRV, post ka naman ng old school tone using the Tonebone :)

Ahem... Yung clips 1-4 kaya pala parang ice pick tunog, dahil nakarekta ka sa recorder :shock: . Matino talaga tunog nung bad monkey dahil may amp simulation yung mixer output nun. Kung sa main out (amp out) ka dumaan, matalas din tutunog yan similar dun sa ibang clips mo.

Para mas maayos ang comparison, i-run mo yung mga OD mo sa isang amp na naka-5 lahat ng EQ tapos i-mic mo then record.

Or kung hindi ka makakapag-mic ng amp, gamit ka ng isang clean amp and speaker model (sabihin nating Fender Twin) sa POD mo tapos i-5 lang lahat ng EQ para malinis ang dating. Walang ibang efx (compressor, reverb, delay, etc) dapat na kasali. In essence, ginawa mong amp yung POD mo. Saka ka ngayon mag-record ng clips ng pedals mo. At the very least, mako-control mo yung talas ng clips lalo na sa hi gain.

 Banat uli!

PS: Ayus yung Zep licks mo, brad , sabay medley kay Kravitz 8)

ganda talaga ng SD1.. lalo if its MIJ, up to this time i regret selling mine to buy sana a TS9... which i eventually didnt like..

para sa kin the BM is better compared to the Ibanez TS series especially the reissues... di ko pa lng na try yung TS808 (old ones).. baka dun n magkatalo

for me with the mixer out, yung BM parang 2 pedals in 1... though i much prefer the line out... sonny gawa k uli ng BM with line out naman...  :)

Venus, yung SD1 ko is a modded one, mas smooth and "fresh" sounding yung distortion nya compared to stock.

buliwyf, galing ng accoustic sim ng Variax no?

Pero what really caught my ear is this clip Variacoustic.
That chord progression, gawa mo un?

I wanted to play something like that, it reminds of those french movies or somthing...european, setting of some sort..Ganun ung mood ng song na gusto ko gawin.

...para at least nde naman metallers lagi. :lol:

cute nya no? meron ng song na ganon, i forgot the title, ill find out later. isa sa mga jazz explorations ko yung song na yun..i was trying to learn running bass.

1)Digitech Bad Monkey - the only thing stopping me from buying this one is the fact that it won't fit in my board anymore... :(

2)Boss SD-1 - ok na ok to lalo na pag naka mod ng keeley...

3)Boss OD-3 - This is the BEST, i say, BEST production overdrive pedal i've EVER heard...panis ang tube screamer, miski keeley ts9...

4)Xotic BB preamp - the most natural sounding od in the market (for me)...mahal nga lang...kaya medyo hassle...

anyway...yun lang...

hirap maghanap ng Xotic BB preamp...like you said, napakamahal pa.
just sold my GT6, me pang GAS na naman hehe..dont tempt me Pareng Markflo! hehe
