Here's a review of the gig posted by Bo Razon on Pinoyjazz:

..and speaking of drummers, one of the finest drummers around is currently
on a Fulbright Fellowship residency in UP for three months...Dr Royal
Hartigan,Ph D is a professor of African and World music at the University of
Massachusetts and is also a practicing musician, one awesome drummer!

At Bond Samson's birthday bash Thursday night at Conspiracy, Royal did a
duet with Tots that was just awesome, sax & drums lang...a bunch of our
compatriots were there - Mar, Koko, Roy Mercado etc - and had nothing but
high praise for doc Royal... turns out barkada ni Doc sina Archie Shepp, Ed
Blackwell, Max Roach etc etc from way back (may edad na ng konti si Doc pero
hataw pa rin) ...he will be giving an intensive workshop series on African
drumming and jazz drumset applications in UP w/ some classes under the
Afro-Latin curriculum (preferably advanced rhythm players)...as he's here
only till the end of December, I recommend drummers/percussionists to check
these workshops out...nakaisa na kami last week w/ Mar, Otep + some of my
students in attendance and it was a great integrative experience

Nga pala, one of his books is 'West African Rhythms for the Drumset'...one
of the source texts I use
in UP...I have the privilege of being his 'dakilang alalay' while he's in
town and so will be the conduit of info re workshop skeds, clinics etc...one
of his goals here also is to research Cordillera and Maguindanao rhythms and
to try and adapt those to the drumset, jazz-style....

by the way, the Bond Samson Birthday 'Jazzfest' at Conspiracy the other
night was super hot! Pikong (Mike Guevarra) and his kids started up the
night w/ great sax quartet music and surprise, surprise, Mike himself
singing on one song!!! Next up was the waaay too long dormant Buhay w/ Tots,
Mar. Meong & Wowie Posadas...who played a superb set, absolutely great
playing from all these guys, pre' bitin naman kami sa absence nyo>>>buhayin
ang Buhay uli !!!! after that there were various jam configurations etc...oh
what a night, practically everyone was there, ang saya... I left at 2:30am
and it seemed like the night was just beginning....wish ko lang may ganitong
salu-salo ang mga kapwa musiko sa larangang ika nga ng "Zajj" kahit every
couple of months...ay okay, this has been my longest post... back to sleep
