Indie is NOT a genre.  Indie simply means Independent artists, like , Indie rock, Indie pop, etc...

hehe yup it started as that.. But eventually, "Indie" became a "genre" of rock music that originated in the United Kingdom and the United States in the 1980s and earlier. Occasionally referred to by the press as indie rock because of their "sound or aesthetic". In short, may sarili na silang tunog that's why naglabasan na ang Ambient, Tweepop, Dreampop, Shoegaze, Noisepop, Lo-fi, C-86, etc which serves as a sub genre of Indie music. A lot of UK bands called their music "Indie" eventhough they are signed up with a Major label

I'm aware of the history of Indie Rock.  But again, Indie, as a term by itself, is not a genre.

yes as a term. Indie = Independent. As for music, there is. Try reviewing UK bands like Adorable, Club 8, The Darling Buds, Posies, Teenage Fanclub, The Wedding Present, Popsicle, The sundays, The Field Mice, Vanilla Trainwreck, Gene, etc.. All of them sounded the same and can be easily categorized as Indie because of their music. Merong Indiepop, Indierock, Tweepop, Noisepop and the like pero walang Indie hardcore, Indie Metal, Indie Ska, Indie Reggae, Indie Jazz kasi hindi sila magkaka tunog.. peace

Again, they're called indie rock because they're not on the commercial mainstream regardless of how different people think they sound. 

We can exchange terminologies everyday, but there are people who are INDIE and they play metal, hardcore, pop, jazz, etc.
