live with your left hand like you do with your right.

Left handed din ako, I started out from guitars right handed...
Then switched to drums, 3yrs and running on a right hand setup...
It helps din to play lefty kase di ako hirap magturo ng drums sa iba...
Though a little more time consuming it helps me playing from both sides...
It gives me flexibility to play right hand, left hand & open handed drumming... :-D

i'm also a left handed drummer. what i do is the open hand technique ever since i played drums. my setup is just the same as usual setup. I'm much comfortable with that. hassle kasi sa gigs if you'd change the setup set after set. hehe.

search for some Carter Beauford (Dave Matthews band) vids. he's also an open handed drummer...
watch your problem? ;p

i use this exercise atleast 20 minutes everyday, to strengthen "the weaker side" which is yung left hand:

*capital letter = accented

singles: (combining accented and non-accented strokes)
8's  L l L l L l L l L l L l L l L l , l L l L l L l L l L l L l L l L
7's  L l L l L l L l L l L l L l , l L l L l L l L l L l L l L
6's  L l L l L l L l L l L l , l L l L l L l L l L l L
5's  L l L l L l L l L l , l L l L l L l L l L
4's  L l L l L l L l , l L l L l L l L
3's  L l L l L l , l L l L l L
2's  L l L l , l L l L
1's  L l , l L
then start way back up (1's, 2's, 3's, ..... 8's)

triplets:
rLL rLL rLL rLL

paradiddle-diddle (switching accents on all left notes):
Lrllrr, Lrllrr, Lrllrr, Lrllrr
lrLlrr, lrLlrr, lrLlrr, lrLlrr,
lrlLrr, lrlLrr, lrlLrr, lrlLrr

In-edit ko to since I'm left handed, changed all "L" & "l" to "R" & "r"...
I'm getting pissed at my right hand not hitting as clear as my left...
Pati yung sa hand grip changes ko during playing & after playing... :x

hehe after mag Sipilyo using left hand

♦mag suklay
♦pag naliligo using "tabo"
♦mag dribble "basketball"
♦mag paypay
♦mag chopstick

Lahat yan using left hand

in short all necessary na ginagawa ng right iparanas sa left hehe

Eto ma-testing nga, pagsing mamaya straight to a whole week...

Dunno about you guys pero just try this.... I do rudiments pagnasa school naman or kahit saan u know with tapping. hehe

But for me, I just simply did a lot of blastbeats and gravity blasts with my left hand dahil dati, lagi na lang right hand ko ang gumgwa ng mga un kpag sa mga parts ng songs. So un nga, bumilis at napakacontrolable pa/na ng left hand ko. Problema lang ay...parang humina un control ng right hand ko for blast beats and gravity blasts pero worth it naman! Dahil maskailangan ko un ganto  :-D My right hand is now more useful

tpos praktis k ng finger technique. or any technique n nag re require sa both hands mo. kunwarri, flam, or paradiddle, or finger technique as i mention earlier. yan. tpos, masasanay ka sa hindi masyadong matalbog tabla, tpos pag palo mo s snare easy nlng sayo kse mas mahirap mag patalbog sa talba kesa s snare eh ^^

Hand Technique
« Reply #372 on: October 07, 2013, 11:47:32 AM »
Discussion of anything relating to hand technique (mods pa-delete/merge nalang kung may topic na regarding this, so far foot technique palang nakikita ko, hehe).

Regarding fulcrum, index+thumb (matched grip) ang nakasanayan ko from the start.  Lately tinry ko yung middle finger+thumb, mas relax at mas nagbabounce talaga yung stick yun nga lang di pa masyado sanay, hehe.  Kayo ba saan yung fulcrum ninyo or do you switch depending on the mood or genre you're playing?

Balance Right & Left Hands
« Reply #373 on: October 27, 2013, 04:24:03 PM »
Normal lang ba sya kasi right handed ako. May mga recommended routine ba para macorrect to. TIA.

Yes it is normal. You just need to exert more activities into your weaker hand as to develop muscle and movement. Common sense really, increase the amount of exercises done on your left hand than the right; no specific routine is needed.
