Title: Need help choosing good headphones for 5k budget
Post by: jpdeleon20 on November 14, 2013, 02:24:04 PM
I need some suggestions on what headphones to buy for a 5k budget.  Pang sipra ng kanta sa iPod at pang nood din ng movies.  Gagamitin din sana sa guitar amp pang monitor.  I was thinking of Marshall Major FX.  Any suggestions?

Can't go wrong with the Superlux HD681 EVO, best in class, and costs only 1.9k sa Egghead Galleria. Mabilis maubos yung stocks nila though.  :-D

Thanks for the suggestions. I bought myself an akg k619. Very nice sound but the plastic frame can break easily. After 3 months of usage, it broke. I had it replaced since it has a 2 year warranty. Let's see if it breaks again...

Sayang di ako nakareply dito. Grado SR80i/SR60i for open back cans, iGrados for in ears, and I would have agreed with the Marshalls and the Superlux ones for closed back cans.

Avoid Superlux. They sound dull and their ear pads wear off easily. For the same price range, get Audio-Technica instead.

They don't sound dull to me, not to my ears. Anyway, if you do have 5k, add a little bit and get the ATH-M50, the prices have already decreased to around 5-5.5k.

sa Egghead sa Robinsons Galleria yung SR60i nila nasa 4K++, yung SR80i 5K++, cash. Sabi ko nga sa kanila i-tip nila ako kung may price drop sa i series kung magdadala sila ng bagong e series

I forgot to mention, just the cheap Superlux cans. Those ones are actually on the bright/shrill side. Yung mga mas mahal yung super dull. The durability, well, yun  :| But for monitoring the amp, the cheap Superlux isn't a bad choice.

For use in guitar monitoring I'd rather buy Samsung stock earplugs (600 pesos or so) than Superlux. I have a Superlux HD660, and compared to it my Samsung earphones have better isolation and more neutral sound.

Ay wait, I haven't heard any Superlux on a separate headphone amp. Baka naman maganda ang tunog pag boosted. Try ko tonight pag-uwi.

I did get to try the cheapo Superlux through one of those headphone amps they have at Egghead. Might have contributed to better tone. I'd have to agree with the stock earbuds though, pati sa Apple. They're more balanced than most other consumer headphones in the price range.

I don't know for sure, pero it says here that the M40x has less/tighter bass and lighter build: http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-M40x-Professional-Headphones/dp/B00HVLUR54

Uy ayus!

Sir Inigo, for cans-only mixing, SR80i or the M50, sino mas honest?

Personally kasi I love the SR80i, super honest (for the price) but since it's open back, the bass is felt more than it is heard, and the response is like listening to a vinyl record, which I find nice. For listening purposes, Grado talaga. I just don't know if they're good enough to mix with too. I'm just afraid I might get a lot of low end mud when mixing with the Grados.

Wala akong experience with the SR80i (matesting nga yan someday). Yung M50 naman narinig ko na, I think useful yung high-mid response nya, kasi naririnig mo yung mud, kaso medyo too ear-friendly sya (smooth?) for my taste. My ears are adjusted to Sennheiser HD280, which sound relatively harsh. People say that the more neutral the headphones are, it's better for mixing, kasi the point is to achieve a mix that translates well into other sound systems.

I think in the end naman, what's important is how your ears have adjusted to the headphones in so much as you can already hear the sounds in an objective way, more than how the headphones actually sound. If you feel na the Grados accentuate some frequencies, than you might want to anticipate that and reduce it, then test the end result with cheap earphones. I test with stock speakers in my car and stock headphones on my phone, then compare with other songs in my playlist.

I shift back and forth from Senn HD280 and my monitor speakers (Yorkville YSM1 and Yamaha MSP5) and they all sound different. I use all of them to check levels, balance, etc, pero I particularly use the HD280 to check for detail (because I don't hear the room), the MSP5 to check for mud in the mids, and the YSM1 for bass and overall balance. I had a Yamaha NS10 once, and in my room I thought that they sound just like my HD280 on my ears. So you know, madaming factors chuvalu.

I always have my favorite tracks in my phone for whenever I check cans out, so I'm good with anticipating frequencies to attenuate, it's just that, well, flatter cans eases up the work in checking with other systems. Nakakapagod din kasi pag sobrang daming systems mo na na-check tapos technicolored pa rin yung mix  :-( Sometimes so fatiguing that I do rough mixes with Apple Earpods and get done with it  I like my HD201s because it's pretty flat though a little shrill, pero ok na rin kasi smooth yung high end pag lumalabas.

but, thanks sir for the input. I think I'll pass the M50 for mixing duties. I'm used to having harsh cans for nitpicking details. I'll still get one though coz it's really nice. in the future

oo, ang unang gagawin nila sayo, lalapitan ka sasabihin "sir magtest kayo, gusto nyo subukan yung bagong Grado/Sennheiser, may turntable at amp kami" WOW.  :) Di ka nila iistorbohin para masubukan mo lahat ng cans nila, kasi wala naman silang ultra low end, so I guess panalo ka na kasi di ka naiirita, tapos mas maganda pa ang sales nila  :-D

Indeed. Fiio is a Chinese company and they're dishing out really good portable headphone amps that get rave reviews! Chinese made products are really starting to shape up now, you just have to pick the good ones.
