especially when i was just starting, i was self taught, i have been playing the drums for over 8 years now, then lately i started considering drum lessons, but the only free drum lessons that i found were on youtube by mike johnston. tas limted pa!

do you think guys that he's a good source of drum lessons? or do you have any recommendations?

i'm a subscriber of mike johnston as well, he's good pero for my level of drumming eh medyo nahihirapan akong sundan. aside from that, to access his lesson eh kelangan magbayad. some other sites that im using in learning are freedrumlessons.com & onlinedrummer.com which i find very useful for me.  :-D

i agree! :)

I think both formal lessons and being self-taught are good.  Whichever works best for us.  And the most important thing is we are learning and improving and developing.

I am a self-taught drummer.  Most of the things I know and can do right now were worked out by doing research, listening to plenty of music, watching drummers (whether live or on video), and reading a lot of Modern Drummer magazines.  And I just have that kind of open-minded, positive attitude.  I'm so passionate with drumming, I'm just determined to learn and get better.

It's also good to have lessons from a credible drum teacher.  If not lessons, at least it's great to have a mentor.  That mentor should be someone who can guide you to become a better drummer and musician.  And he/she should be somebody whom you can easily approach and seek for advices in case you need any help.

In my case, I had lessons with Mar Dizon back in 2002.  This was my very first series of drum lessons, after being self-taught since I first picked up a pair of sticks in 1992.  I'm forever grateful with my sessions with Senyor Mar.  He helped me clean up my playing and correct my bad habits.  As a result, my groove has greatly improved.

I still look up to Mar.  I am also grateful to great cats like Jun Relalado, his son Junjun Regalado, and Benjie "Bagets" Mendez, whom I all look up to as mentors and brothers in music and drumming.  They have helped me in so many ways.

Any learning method can do.  The most important thing is we're learning and we're making some progress.  And we should never stop learning.

 :-)

very well said!

ayus 'to ah.
