Your opinion on the current musical trends in music locally
« on: September 08, 2009, 09:36:24 PM »
Years back we had the grunge movement, the nu metal, we had punk, we had briefly a rise in the underground Goth movement, then we had a few years of emo, etc etc (you get the idea). These are just general assumptions based on my opinion of course and are subjective.

What do you think is the current local trend in music, in general?

In what direction do you think these trends are currently headed after a few years?

IOW

Ano ba ang uso ngayon, sa tingin ninyo, and ano kaya ang next na magiging uso based sa observation ninyo?

Let's talk mainstream muna.... the typical music that majority of the current younger generation listens to.

Actually parang WALA.

Ewan ko. Baka ako lang. Parang blangko e. Parang playing safe lang ang mainstream ngayon. Wala masyadong nangingibabaw na mga banda/singer. Nagpapakiramdaman siguro.
Ows? Di nga?

in a way, it's a good thing, because we'll have to invent something new.

Acts that stand out for me are mostly indie. And sadly, I doubt any of these bands are getting the mainstream treatment anytime soon.

im seeing a rise in bands that generally are in the direction of metal lately, like "metalcore, deathcore" kind of stuff.

Mostly mga established name ang nasa mainstream. Pati na rin actors/actresses turned singers. In essence walang specific genre na nangingibabaw. Kailangan ng isang major hit na kakaiba from the indie/underground para magkaroon ng spice, he he he.

Mostly the usual pop rock pa rin...pacute, smooth and mostly pacute if mainstream ang pag-uusapan.

The indie scene will still be filled of bands more deserving of praise than those of the mainstreamists. That for one is the truth.

Mukhang ganoon na nga :) Think of it as similar to the days before the band domination of the 90's. Yes, we were still young then, pero mare-realize mo na similar sa situation ngayon. Bago nag-emerge from the underground scene ang mga banda eh dominated ng established name ang local industry. Maybe a year or two, masa-saturate na naman ang airwaves/industry with lots of local bands. Then ang matitira eh yung may kakayahang mag-evolve ng sound.

----

Sa mainstream, may mga maayos pa rin, established band like The Dawn is still doing good stuff. Eraserheads spawn like Pupil, Markus Highway and Sandwich are doing well. I just don't appreciate the notion that mainstream = crap or pa-cute. Marami ring bands on the underground na pa-cute ang style, merong palalim effect para ma-separate from the rest. Merong pa-metal-metal daw at anti-establishment pero ang mga suot na damit at ibang gamit eh from the mainstream companies, he he he.

I think so, too.

I also think OPM had a resurgence in 2004-2005, when there were fresh faces (Panahon ng Hale), and solid releases from the industry's living legends (Sandwich, Pupil, 'Maya, Bamboo). But even if the scene was noticeably bigger than in years prior, it still failed to reach the height of what we had in the 80's and 90's.

Seriously, I thought Hale was on it's way to becoming the next big thing. The 21st Century torchbearer of OPM. Kaso hinde.

Fast forward to right now, and the excitement levelled-down a couple of notches. Some of the current releases are saturating the scene more than helping. You also have the rise of indie productions, labels, and bands (Terno and Sonicboom/shape come to mind).

But when and how and IF they'll break through is still anyone's guess.

well lately mga napapansin ko is yung "post-hardcore" trend na naririnig ko palagi with bands.

hmmm fastpitch come into mind? i guess? ewan ko. parang sila defining sound na alam ko for the current trend i hear in our musical landscape today.

 :?

yung screaming with a blend of clean vocals..

pero tama.. metalcore nga ang uso rin ngayon... also blend with growling and clean singing.. pero wala pa ako alam locally... shadows fall ang alam ko na magaling mag blend ng ganitong techniques... lalo na sa bago nilang album..  :-D

one can see the difference in the songwriting...of today and yesterday...i think some arent catchy enough to last decades, ako ang pinakikinggan ko nalang na bands today are itchyworms, imago, and pedicab

id say music is too commercialized today, nobody wants to write a really good song anymore... kung anu nalang masulat mafill lang yung space ng isang cd...

nobody's making an album that is will last for many generations...

for me, what comes to mind as the "leaders" in todays' music are bands like urbandub, faspitch, angulo, etc. i think you hit the nail on the head right there.

Hey guys, I cant help but read and reply on this thread.  Not to sound nihilistic or arrogant...I'm actually in a band and like everyone here, we want to make a dent and open up minds of the Filipino listeners on something a bit edgy but can still be considered "pop-ish".  We been around for a couple of years already but cant seem to find "that big break" because like you said, most record labels are playing it safe nowadays.

We recently joined this thing called MTV EMERGE, in hopes of landing that big break and we've been fortunate enough that a lot of people are supporting us.  We actually are in the top spot right now with 2700++ votes and of course, we'd want more people to take a listen to us and support us on this one.  Visit the link below and have a listen:

http://www.mtvemerge.com/browse/view.php?key=17D8603C8B3CF23E

If you like what you hear, you can vote for us, rate and leave a comment.  If not, it's alright. we thank you for your time in listening. =)

Thanks very much and I hope we get your support on this one.

Keep the light of music burning..

OPM now is made of gravity, they attract and pull each other as if they sound alike from the same source or  fountain of youth  ( those musicians who look up to them and copy their sound and style) so can you imagine how ridiculous to hear a singer/band , even a  popular  one plagiarized his own  to support a presidential candidate,  or a band  mixing  3 singers/bands in one--Rico Blanco-Barbie Almabis and Paolo Santos to cite one.  how creative.

the new bands  create noise, not music, if not wind--they come and go w/o being heard, well,  whats new?  a music genius--not that I  know him or claim he is, but given the credit he is believed to be famous for yet I have no idea-- joined Yeng to sell out and  try the  vibe that she created by also making sequels  of her music,  if not that old  formula that once made a band in history.

and the latest, Sarah G  sounding like Madonna in Record Breaker, too late, err, too young to be a dame..

why do some artists still rely on remakes to make hits?,even if you say that you make it your own you still didnt write it!.....im glad that there are still artists today who really strive to write good original music...while others will just keep remaking and remaking and remaking forever....and they keep yappin about piracy...hmmm?

come on pinoys .....if we say were really talented...we sure could do alot better than that..

hmm, a few days ago, i tried joining some bands...

the first one wanted me to learn Wilabaliw songs, the 2nd one wanted me to learn Franco songs.

when we joined red horse muziklaban, the one who won was a metalcore band that's a clone of As I Lay Dying.

i dont know, seems like we are in a transition period thats heavily influenced by postrock and non-traditional song writing. personally, i am not into it. im an old guy.. i still believe in verse-chorus-verse
