Question about drum mutes..
« Reply #28 on: October 12, 2007, 12:05:44 AM »
mga sir may tatanong lang po ako..
nagbabalak po kasi ako na bumili ng kit, kaso the problem is yung malakas na sound na manggagaling dito. ang malas ko kasi not in favor ang family ko sa ingay ng drums (ingay ang tawag nila eh)..

My question is, talaga bang effective yung Drum Mutes?
As in gaano ba talaga kahina or mababawas sa tunog?

Pearl Muffle Head

Goodluck!  :-)

So Be It.

Un kasing bass/kick/low frequencies, hindi sila masyadong na-i-irita kasi more of "nararamdaman" sya..

Sa pagkaka-alam ko high frequencies travel shorter than low frequencies kaya kapag relatively malayo ung nakikinig sayo, without any amplification, mas maririnig/mararamdaman nila ung low frequencies/bass kaysa dun sa high frequencies (cymbals, etc)..

o bili na kayo kay sir vinci!

hello everyone...
i would just like to share my experience with my drum mutes Vic Firth Drum Mutes....actually the Vic Firth Drum Mutes are pretty good good stick response, but the main issue for me is the bass drum mute...this is because the adhesive of the bass drum is small (parang didouble-sided tape velcro circle... isang parte kinakabit mu sa bass drum batter skin at ung kabila nasa mute itself ) the problem with this is that i use masking tape to fix the mutes in place (nahuhulog kasi pag nagdodouble peds na ako) as for the mutes for the toms and snare...their ok occasionally nahuhulog sila kung nakatilt yung toms mu, but ayun masking tape ulit hahahahahaha...lastly the cymbal mutes the triangular rubber mutes...their fixed to the cymbals via the clamp of the cymbals itself, the response is ok...ayun...the Vic Firth Drum Mutes are a good buy for me, and with its sound muffling capability...i can play all night long....well maybe not past 10pm but nevertheless still worth it for me...hahahahahaha

 :-D peace out dudes~

Bro, im just thinking the same thing. at first ung bass ko eh wala pang unan, medyo sama ng tunog na malakas na parang may echo. nung nilagyan ko ng unan, medyo naging buo na ung tunog. sa toms naman, same thing na para ding may echo, ask ko lang kung ok ba din ung unan or clothes lng? effective ba ung cloth sa cymbals? any other alternative for this? thanks  :-D

Hi guys,

Anybody here who has hands-on experience with DW's Smart Practice DeadHead Practice Pads?

http://www.dwdrums.com/smartpractice/deadhead.htm

I've seen these pads on display at Lyric stores.  They're pretty expensive, but they look nice.  I just hope that somebody here can share any feedback or comment about these products.

A four-piece Deadhead pad set for drums (10, 12, 13 & 14" sizes) cost around Php5300.

A set of cymbal Deadheads cost around Php2200.

A bass drum Deadhead kit costs around Php2200.

It's that expensive.  That's why I'm hoping to read some feedback about it, before I decide to gamble on it.

I like this compared dun sa ibang mutes kasi hindi halos rubber ang feel..

yung ganito ang nasubukan ko:

I'll settle for my home-made mutes muna... I'd rather spend that on other gears... for you however, bagay yan sa new Superstar Kit mo... hehehe!

I just thought that I need a set of silencer/mute pads.  I don't have a sound-reinforced room at home, I don't want people around me to go nuts, and I have a sister who sleeps during the day because of her graveyard shift.  Yet I still want to be productive with my woodshedding.  The silencers/mutes would be very practical for me.

I have the impression that the DW Deadheads may be the closest in resembling the actual feel and rebound of a tensioned drumhead, while maintaining low volume levels without sacrificing the actual feel of the drumkit.  Any more alternatives?

The HQ mutes look nice too...

Check out this Akira Jimbo clip -
feature=related

the title of the video says it all, but what really struck me about the clip is the way Akira jimbo muffled his drums. What he did was he clipped felt strips to the rim of his toms. The strips freely bounce on the batter head so they don't choke the drums as much as stick on dampeners do. Check out the 37 sec. mark of the video for a clear view of how he muffled his toms

I do a similar thing to my floor toms to regulate sustain. I put small pieces of cloth, fastened to a lug by a twine wire, and put the hanging cloth on the head. It does the similar bouncing motion that Jimbo's felt strips has. Result is the heads ring fully once you hit it, but decays as the cloths bounce back, as if you're gating your drums.

Here's a pic with the strips of cloth in the "off" position (hehe). Look towards the left, sa floor toms.
