« on: October 24, 2008, 04:26:50 AM »
Out of curiosity who among you guys are bass players as well?

Or at least knows how to play the bass while being a drummer..

Would you guys agree that having some bass background helps a lot in becoming a good drummer?

haha, party people ba.  :-D

malaki talaga tulong niya, madedetermin mo yung beating ng song/s, cuz bass and rums are brothers.  :-)

i play bass too..

I'd say it has help me build a more stable tempo when playing drums..although, my time is really messed up..I tend to get emotional almost always behind the kit.  but when I practice along w/ a metronome at home..yakang yaka naman eh, but when playing along with a band, ayan..wasak na.

another help would be, it helps me get creative with my foot when grooving..and vice versa (meaning, I had the same help when playing bass).

ako drummer tlga ako .. and also play bass .... ngayon nga mas tumutugtog ako na bahista eh hehehehe ... sa VCF kasi i play Bass sa Main and drums sa KC .. but sa KC madaming gusto pumalo .. so i give my slot to them and lilipat ako sa keyboards ..

dapat naman drummers and bassist should work together eh .. di yun palo na lang ng palo .... and beign a bassist too somehow lets me understand or alam mo na kung anong palo lang gusto ng bahista on his groove .... 3 ways you could do .. sabay kayo (mostly sa mga rock) ... poste ka lang (pop) or magkaiba ginagawa nyo but compliments each other (mostly napapansin ko sa funk.. yun ibang ghost notes eh kala mo sa drummer pero sa bassist pala galing) ....

it really helps if you know how to play both the bass and the drums... kasi sa isang band, drums at bass yung backbone :-D dapat SOLID silang dalawa, and knowing how to play those 2 instruments, marerealize mo kung ano yung kailngan nung isa sakanilang dalawa, in order for them to be both solid.. KAHIT GANO PA KAGALING ANG GUITARISTA MAGSOLO, O KAHIT GANO KALAKAS PA SIYA TUMUGTOG.........HINDI SIYA MAGIGING SOLID, KUNG HINDI TUGMA ANG BASS AT DRUMS :-D

i play bass, and because im not getting any gigs after the band sort of broke up, i decided to take up drums this year. ive been fooling around with the kit, but this is the first 3 weeks where i really practiced right (starting slow and all). i invested on good drum gear, so its very encouraging to practice too.

back when i was playing bass, i was very critical of the drummer ...

now im playing drums, i think ill be critical with the bassist *lol* i havent played in a band setting currently though (not counting nonsensical xmas party jams), still developing basic rudiments and speed.

kinda ironic cause of all the bands ive joined, there was only one drummer who knew and cared about what i did ... the rest - they just wanted the guitars loud and basically have no idea what im doing or the effort i put to accent their kick drums and play ghost notes to their hi-hat accents - i actually am trying to make them sound good!

i just hope most "drummers" arent as random because ive played with those ppl whose accents change every bar or so. as for tempo, well, im usually guilty of speeding up songs too *lol* so i really cant nail the drummers i jammed with for that.

nope ... those weird virtuoso guitarists take the cake here...

it makes more sense din naman since they are accustomed to notes, frets and strings, so it takes them little practice to learn things like: lyre, mandolin, banjo, bass, cello, and sometimes, harp, piano, keyboard, etc.

the muscle memory in drums is a lot different ... so it would take you awhile to learn stringed instruments as oppossed to something like bongos, congos, etc.

i started out with guitar, and 2 years ago i played bass - the learning was easier.

right now im learning drums and even if i have a drum kit that i messed around with for like more than 10 years, it is VERY hard to play drums... especially the fills. sometimes, it gets tiring figuring them out exactly, i end up making something of my own with the same timing of course *lol*

and lastly, theres a difference between knowing how to "mess around" and knowing how to play. the names you mentioned below, eventhough i havent seen them play other instruments, seemed like guys who know how to "mess around" with guitars, the same way i know how to "mess around" with drums (before i took it seriously)

i was a bassist for 13 years bago ako nagshift sa drums. 2years ako sa drums, then keyboards ako ngaun. etong 3 lang ang cycle ko, drums bass and keys. pag nabore ako sa isa, lipat.
drums and bass are rhythm sections. in my experience, mas madali maacquire ng drummer yung "groove" if nanggaling sha sa bass or may bass background sha. kase nung ako ay nagbebass pa, ramdam na ramdam ko kpag bumibilis ang drummer namen.
ayun,
drummer bass combo. dpat chill palage

me too! bassist talaga ako dati.. pero ung drummer kasi namin dati wala sa timing, so tinesting ko. aun naging drummer ako. hehe. now i think mas marami na kong alam sa drums kaysa sa pagbabass.
