Make cymbals darker (?)
« on: August 22, 2009, 08:53:43 PM »
Ey guys non-drummer here, almost total ijit when it comes to drum gear.

I have a set of Sabian B8's and they sound good, but they are too bright for some purposes.

So tanong ko lang, do you drummers have tips and tricks to make your cymbals sound "darker" ? Like some special compound or something ? Preferably I don't want to damp the things, but I want to get rid of the high frequency wash.

If not, I'll have to go shopping for new cymbals :-D

just a thought,.. sabian did an experiment way back (1 of 100); burying a cymbal underground supposedly ages a cymbal's sound pero i'm not sure if it would work sa B8's though.. try not cleaning them for it to develop it's own character so to speak..  8-)

Try mo lang (i did it myself), hand hammering. Isang bagsak at a time until you get the sound you are looking for. worked for me  :-)

Naku risky ata yung mag self hand hammering ka unless experienced cymbalsmith ka.

True, pero at the very least.. you'll kill off some sustain and possibly make the sound trashier, kasi di na balanced.

ngek  :-D

bamf, bili ka na lang ng korek sounding cymbal kesa imodify mo yan. baka mawalan ka pa ng cymbal hehehe. doable naman yung gusto mo mangyari pero marami ka muna sasayangin dahil sa pag experiment

i personally dont believe in "not cleaning" the cymbal to get a darker sound. meron akong uncleaned ride for 2 years. nirecord ko pa sa isang song yun bago ko linisin pero wala naman ako marinig na nagbago.

Whew thanks guys. Yeah, I don't think I'll try hammering the thing but if anyone can do it for me... :-D .

Oh well.

Parang AAX/A Customs yun.

Try the Stagg DH'es din if you're looking for a general, all-purpose set. They're a bit cheaper than the Myras. Yan pa ata ang may pinakamaraming models to choose from, including crashes and rides with a raw bell, and a ton of effect cymbals. Plus they come in odd sizes like 17" and 19" too.

Titipid nga pareng paeng hehehe. Stagg DH it is then. Crash muna. Yun naman pinaka-problematic kong piece. Sobra ang wash saka kalansing pag nirerecord.

Besides, drummers at my studio are expected to bring their own. Problem is when recording tracks for my own band

Actually, in the Stagg lineup, the SH is the cheapest line. Whatever you get, when you buy, try as many of the same model as they have in the store. Staggs (and Wuhans) are notoriously inconsistent, kinda like 70's A Zildjians. The nice thing about this is that if you find one you like, chances are it will be unique and no one else will have one that sounds the same.

True. Isang tropa ko nga naka-iskor ng Zildjians...yung Titanium ba yun. 4 k isang set.

Abang-abang lang. In the meantime, manghihiram muna ako hehehe.

avoid stagg for recording...masyado kasing lumalabas yung thrashy-chinese-noisy character nya kapag sa recording. parang china yung nirerecord mo kahit na crash cymbal sya. stick with the popular, tried and tested crash models from the big manufacturers to be safe.
