I own a PGM 301 for when I noodle with pseudo-shredding at home , an am std tele for the pa-cute songs, and a squier vm jazzmaster for the cool songs. So far, I like the JM tones the most, pero it gets the least live playtime. Kulang pa sa cool factor.

I have  5 guitars configured differently for one genre (metal). The things I like require diff tunings.

Ideally, a guitar per different stuff

Just a Les Paul.

Then use your creativity to make it sound like you want it to sound.

I have a guitar set-up specifically for legato / shredder stuff (very low action, light gauge)
Then I have another for crunching those Metal  riffs, Thrash in general and newer groove Metal (Heavy gauge string, sometimes drop tunings)
Then I have another one for Stevie Ray Vaughan/Hendrix stuff (Single coil, low-output)
Then I have a ''general purpose '' practice guitar that I always get whenever I'm not connected to my Amp or amp-sim speakers   :)
Then I have a hollow body Les Paul China copy that I don't use, for display lang haha because I thought I could handle Jazz but boy was I wrong :-D

i've been going "around the block"  for about 2-3 years now.  testing guitars at vintage guitar stores (in essence a used guitar store)

i have also been asking different opinions.

so far, my personal realization is that, sound wise, a good guitar should have a wide "vocal range. example, kunwari, magandang strat. imagine 3 circles representing a les paul, strat and a tele. a good strat would over lap into the les paul and tele circles. it may not fully sound like a les paul or even have the LP's famous dual tone but it came make really fat tones. on the other hand, a good strat can twang a little bit.

in the same manner, a good tele should be able to sound like a strat in some way. and a good les paul should be able to do good tele sounds. in fact, old les pauls are known to be  "teles on steriods".

the problem is, mahirap hanapin ang ganung gitara.

pero if maka hanap ng ganun, i'd like to have one guitar talaga.

sound aside,  meron ding physical limitations, ex 21 frets. of course if you like the type of music na laging umaabot sa 22-24 frets, maiinis ka lang din.

for me the next best answer would be to have one classic style electric guitar and a modern style guitar, both with wide vocal ranges.

but again, maybe we're talking about the top 5% of guitars at mahirap hanapin yun.

simplest way na lang siguro is to have a few guitars.

A great sounding Superstrat-type with SSH or HSH pickups is the most versatile guitar in my book. Take note of "great sounding." No need for one guitar per genre. I think this is where the "tone is in the fingers" advocates should shine.
though I'm not a huge fan of super strats (lookswise)  I really have to agree. if built right and is "great sounding", a super strat with above mentioned specs should cover all of a guitar player's needs in a general sense. If one finds that guitar, it should eliminate any further "needs". Anything that comes after are just "wants".

The thing is, there is NO such thing as a ''Jack-of-ALL-Trades'' guitar

If you play some of the more laid-back Rock/Blues tunes then obviously you'd need a PAF-type/low output humbuckers that puts the organic tone above anything else

For metal,  high-output actives or passives are the way to go (minus the dreaded middle pick-up that is a HASSLE to many)

BUT if you're going to spend only on  ONE guitar, yung H-S-H pinaka safe bet mo siguro along with a high-output pick-up (because you can always dial it down to decrease the gain, but then again...still, will not be enough to emulate the more  tone-centric humbuckers like the SD Screamin Demon or Even a Tone Zone or Evolution......

IMO a versatile guitar in my book (altho there is none) should be a guitar with a push-pull tremolo system, a high-output bridge pickup + single coil at the middle and a medium output neck pick up.

The Number of frets don't matter  :)

i own 3 hi-end guitars. but i use a custom super strat that i asked Sir Arie
to make...Mahogany body, maple neck, rosewood fret board and S-S-H config sa pups
with treble bleed..

its my go-to-guitar for all genre...

the hi-end guitars are there just to keep my sanity...:-)

I'm too lazy to carry 2 or 3 guitars. My p22 and cu24 are versatile enough to cover every genre.

1 guitar per purpose.

Pero kung isa kang tagasunod ng kultong beks,
You'll only need 1 guitar with a proper setup, your fingers will do all the trick.
Pwede mong gawing tunog LP ang isang Raon strat., well that's according to the sisters.

I'd go for 1 guitar per purpose. At the moment I have 2 bands, one thrash metal and a jrock(going AOR) project and both have different tunings. I think changing tuning from time to time could be bad on the neck, do correct me if I'm wrong.

as long as hindi pa-ekis yung guitar or maraming kanto.  i think that's enough to be a versatile guitar, a simple H-H or H-S-H superstrat looks good at any genre.

Back in 2007-2010, I used to think that it's best to have just 1 end-all guitar...... but now, I try to widen my arsenal with a few more interesting pieces which sound a bit different from each other.

Where's the fun in owning just one guitar? Hehehe. The more, the merrier.  :-D :-D
