listening to music..
« on: October 16, 2006, 10:24:27 PM »
Hello fellow drummers. Just a question, when you listen to music do you listen as a drummer?
For me I like listening to music with a good drum groove, I like listening to  songs that when I hear a cool drum fill or groove, I'm like DAMN I wish I could do that.. :D
just want to know your thoughts..
power in numbers!!!

ako i don't usually focused sa mga mga fill-in ng drums sa mga songs kahit di nman masyadong mahirap basta nandun ung groove and consistency para mas maganda ung impact ng songs ay ok.......for example: the music of toto si jeff porcaro ay hindi masyado focused sa fill-in kasi importante alam nya yung role nya as a drummer of toto na nagbibigay ng impact sa songs nila pero kung maririnig mo ang toto mas masarap pakinggan ang kanta dahil sa groove ni jeff. and tha'ts my point of view.................
Music is not what I do, It's who I am

Groove! Groove! Groove! That makes an impression on me.
So Be It.

When i need to relax and just do easy listening, I listen to the music as a whole.. the whole shebang thing! syempre jiving on the groove paren..

But when it comes to kapaan ng grooves because tutugtugin ko yung piece, im more concentrated to listen to the drums!

cheers!!!

Dude, showband ba? Try most of the new R&B Songs, House Songs and Some of the Classical love songs. And some of the current rock songs. Depende na lang sa papasukan mong klaseng full band eh. Usually mga yun naman ang pondo ng mga showband. Basic Pondo is Rock songs, Dance Music, and Love songs. Dun na umiikot mga pondo. Depende na lang sa rock show band in which puro rock talaga ang kanta niyo na ang dance music niyo is new wave kaya pasok pa rin sya sa image ng rock showband. heheh.

it would take a lot of time and it would eliminate the variety of songs pag ini-specify ko sa yo yung mga songs ng pinagse-sessionan ko na show band. Pero yun lang ang tip ko, rock, dance and love songs kelangan mo. Manood ka na lang ng tv and makinig ng radio for specifications of the songs kasi most of the time mga bago ang tinutugtog ng showbands....

I hoped i have helped you quite a bit....

i suggest that you listen to records that are recorded live. para hindi rin ma-bore yung mga tao, dapat maganda rin yung mga fillers ninyo. and i think most opm bands today make good fillers and good intros :-D

Screw Portnoy. Assuming you won't play origs, at least initially, basically listen to the songs or bands that you like and intend to cover.

Unless, of course, you really like Portnoy. :D

OT:

3. Vinnie Collauita of The Police

... Vinnie Collauita played for The Police?

I stand corrected.....I mean in Sting's albums.

I can't really play Portnoy's licks but its nice to watch him play - I'm somewhat studying his licks and I'm trying to incorporate them to my personal exercises.

Bro I play in a variety band and what I can suggest is to listen to songs that are groove oriented and drummers that play for the song. Yes live albums of opm artist are good reference kse magaganda yun mga areglo at ok ang palo. Yun mga top 40 songs ngayun is a must ndi mo naman kelangan cprahin ng eksakto basta alam mo lang yun takbo ng kanta. Bossa is in right now so might as well have knowledge of that. Try as many styles as possible to widen your drum knowledge plus practice ka ulit mag drums ng full set-up to acquaint your body ulit kse muscle memory yan eh. parang pag babike lang na once na natutunan mo ndi mo na makakalimutan. Kelangan mo lang i-polish ulit.
