im not an expert in this PUP thing, but what i learned is that:

you can only appreciate an expensive pick-up if you have THAT guitar (which is most likely expensive).

fitting a 15K bareknuckle set on a 12K Tokai strat seems like a waste of money to me.

same thing with gain pedals. i finally know what they meant when they said "organic distortion."

if you are playing thru cheap, solid state amps, the digital modelers sound better than the boutique ones. same thing applies to PUP i guess... i think Firemodel said something about that once - the whole chain has to be "boutique"

I agree with you 95% -- the 5% being if you have an exceptionally sounding Tokai.
