DIY Kick Drum Shockmount
« on: July 07, 2009, 12:37:36 AM »
Saw something of the sort at JB. I thought it was too expensive at 3k plus, so I decided to do DIY.

I used a PVC coupling, I think its 4" in diameter (nagpabili lang kasi ako), some nylon webbing from Divisoria, and some bungee cords from a DIY hardware store (the one in Harrison Plaza).

I put them together and presto. I think I spent less than 500 bux on this.

Thanks to alien_inside and company...pati na din JB Music for providing the inspiration. This is what I need right now but I got the seminal ideas from you.

Hmmm now while the thing can be aimed up and down, it can't be pointed right and left. Which might not be a good thing if you want to aim at the batter-head area at an angle.

So the solution (teka wala pang pics ngayon ko lang naisip to)...a gooseneck !

Ganda!!! but the next step will be TUNING THE BUNGEE CORDS... ( make it LOOSE to avoid some sort of 80 - 170hz tone... something like that... )

I recorded it as soon as it was finished. Yes, it seems to capture more of the resonance of the wood but that was easily mitigated when I put in the damping material (a pillow in this case). It still sounds more "resonant" than when I was still using a mike stand. In a good way naman. We'll see when the next band that records comes along.

The problem I see with loose cords is that the mount and mike will dance around, altering its placement. Here with the 6"cords doubled back, there is already some form of vibration on the kick drum mount. But thanks for the tip, I'll try it when I find some 3"bungee cords.

Or stick to that setup but MUTE the cords...

about 8 months ago, I first experience that LFs when somebody recorded here, na medyo maingay yung paa during vocal recording... tapping the floor for beat reference. and napansin ko sa vocal track, may parang tunog ng floor tom... so i placed that teddy bear to muff the goose neck...

That's a cool idea ! Maybe I'll wrap it in some furry thingies...the material used for the skin of stuffed toys.

Generally tho, I tell my customers doing vocals that the mikes are very sensitive, only the sound of breathing is allowed (hehehe). Even the people in the studio are told to hush and all external sounds such as the TV downstairs (and people talking) are muted.

I found a way tho. It helps to put the sensitivity of your preamp a little lower than usual. Sure helps in the drum leakage. Now I can afford to turn my aircon on when someone is singing, notwithstanding the blowing sound in the background (it's not picked up anymore when a lower sensitivity setting is used).

I think you could put some damping material, like sponges, in between the bungee strands to further damp resonances.

Problem with low gain is that the noise floor inadvertently rises, especially when you start pushing that track's gain during mixdown.

Yeah I heard the motto "record as hot as possible". But it wasn't helping with the leakage. So I set the gain down but the level up on the mixer, kinda like low trim but sliders maxxed out (to include group faders too). I get a hot signal going into the recorder, which amazingly flatlines when the mic is not hearing anything near. Just a minimum of gating is necessary for cleanup. Thats for drums. For vocals, amazingly good results as well (i mean, noise wise). But that's from limited experience tho as most vocalists that gigged in my studio were mostly "loud"  :-D.

Hindi naman po nakapermanente sa interior-side ng lugs, is it? Curious.

Yung nylon webbing i-fold mo lang in half. tapos butasin mo through and through yung side na walang "loop".

it holds down my muffling too!

Either the microphone is really special or there's something in the mount that can't be seen in the pictures.

Pero katuwaan lang, I have another Drum mike...subukan ko kaya ang ganitong mounting...hmmm...
