Title: Whose tone is venerated so much but YOU yourself hate?
Post by: skunkyfunk on September 08, 2009, 04:15:15 PM
I just seem not to understand why a lot like George Lynch's tone.  I mean, yeah, he used the same #38 (or was it #39) SIR modded Marshall SLT for the songs in Dokken's "Under Lock and Key" album as Slash did for Appetite for Destruction.  But there is something about the scooped and ultracompressed tone I do not like.

I also don't understand why there is so much tone-chasing for Lamb Of God's tone (especially from the Ashes of the Wake album) and while they are using those Mesa Mark IVs, they seem to dial out too much mids and use too much gain.

Well, JMO.

common answer.

Actually, that is due to the very bad recordings.  But I suggest listening to the latest remastered material, as in mixed for 5.1 surround.  You'll find out that the Machine Gun days were orgasmic...

di mo masisisi eh. when you hear someone does riffs with this tone, alam mong metal na talaga ang tugtugan.

I've heard the worst of metal tones (errr... Burzam) but LOG seems to have this over-saturated solidstate-like sound.  Maybe for modern metal, Chimaira and Divine Heresy are my favorites.  Between The Buried and Me has killer tones too.

hehe onga.. yung tone ng LOG parang mosquito buzz na ewan..

but i like the new tone on their new album. mas open na, probably because they've rolled back on the gain knob.. somehow...

well ako...

i used to think that dimebag's tone is the best.. partida solid state amps gamit niya.. lately napansin ko.. walang laman tone niya... yung nagpabigat lang talaga is yung riffs talaga saka yung doubling...

pero ang laki nung difference nung krank and randall niya... may 'muscle' talaga yung tone niya sa krank amps.. hehe.

odd...that sound 95% of the time comes from a Mark IV and is actually a staple amp head for the guys. the LOG boys do mix their sound a bit different to have more mids than your typical metal band.

never been a fan of Malmsteen's tone. a fan of his playing? yes. the tone is sterile sounding to me but that may be because i've never been a fan of the Marshall sound.

Ung tone ni Satriani mula nung nag-shift cya sa Peavy amps..dry & sterile for me. Mas gusto ko ung dati tone nya nung nka-Marshall pa cya, more round & warm.

Vai's, Yngwie's, Paul Gilbert's tones are NOT venerated. They hardly ever get mentioned. You hardly ever have people saying like "I want to get his tone"...

So...

To answer the question...

1. EVH's - I never liked his tone. And I will not ever wish to be able to nail that "brown sound". Yes, it's distinctive and all, but I hate it!
2. Satriani's - Good live tone, nothing stellar. But I never liked his (varied) tone in his studio albums. I have to note though that the tone for his "Crystal Planet" album is to me, his best.
3. Dimebag's - Your typical "scooped" sound, aka Angry swarm of bees. Never liked it. I could never understand why all these kids wants to nail that tone.

George Lynch's and Warren DeMartini's are what I call THE 80's tone. I love them.
And yes, I also love Yngwie's tone.

Most underrated tone: Blues Saraceno's.
Holy Grail tone: Slash's lead tone, Zakk Wylde's "No More Tears" rhythm tone.

Robben Ford and the uber ismuuuth lead tones.   :-D  I'm sure a lot of guys like the super creamy smooth buttery compressed <insert more adjectives> neck tones, but there's a certain treshold where it starts to bug me.  Santana can be in this category sometimes for me.

His switch to Marshall VMs kind of improved his tone, but he still seems to dial in a lot of treble and presence. "Presents" pala... :D

In the case of some guitarists, you need to be specific which era or album referred to. Example: Beano/Cream-era Clapton vs 80s/90s Clapton. current Buddy Guy vs 50s Buddy Guy. pre-Baker/Diezel oasgomez vs current oasgomez. :-)

Ummm sarap Clapton on "From the Cradle" using a Soldano amp and a 335. Thats what got me into the blues. Jingle Angel kasi ang review nya sa Jingle mag, so I bought it. Managed to destroy the tape from overplaying.

While this would sound like a great idea, sometimes a recording cannot be a good representation of how the actual source sounded in the studio.  For instance, Cream's "Sunshine of Your Love" can give you that impression that EC's sounds were so slick.  Actually, try plugging to a JTM45 with KT66s and crank it, that IS the Clapton/Cream sound. It is huge and deafening.  Same goes for pre-Acid Beatles recordings.  AC30s are so jangly yet the original masters sounded like poop guitar-wise.

don't like anything that's scooped and too processed(that generic 80's metal/glam sound).  understandable if used in metal as it calls for it, but generally don't like them.

good tone for me = paul kossoff, joe bonamassa, leslie west, montrose

That's a given. You have to treat live sound and recorded sound as two different entities, but two sides of the same coin. Depende na lang kung ano goal ng recording engineer/artist. If it's to capture the live sound perfectly/ there will still be some compromise. If you factor in the distribution medium (radio, cd, vinyl, wav, or lossless formats, etc.), the final sound can be even further removed from the orig live sound.

well usually the notes sound really tubby na talaga when you use a lot of gain in the neck pick up position.

some of paul gilbert's songs in the silence followed by a deafening roar album have that kind of tone...

but it's a really good pickup when doing god-like string skipping runs, like the one paul usually does. it helps the notes decay a little slower so you don't have a dead silence while skipping strings...

but then again... panget nga pag masyado na mataas.

magandang neck pickup tone... gary moore in his cover of red house, using a strat. blues shred!

well usually the notes sound really tubby na talaga when you use a lot of gain in the neck pick up position.

some of paul gilbert's songs in the silence followed by a deafening roar album have that kind of tone...

but it's a really good pickup when doing god-like string skipping runs, like the one paul usually does. it helps the notes decay a little slower so you don't have a dead silence while skipping strings...

but then again... panget nga pag masyado na mataas.

magandang neck pickup tone... gary moore in his cover of red house, using a strat. blues shred!

i agree

and some major badass-ery right there, sweet tone  8-)

siguro ang ayaw ko yung ma treble or too much presence na tipong "magalas" na pakinggan,. yung tone ni PG sa intense rock diko masyado trip, magalas talaga

yung kay dime naman ok pa saken, bigat eh,justifiable na for me ang too much highs sa case niya,. :-)

i like vai's tone para kasing nagsasalita na yung guitar (try "whispering a prayer"),though minsan sobrang masabaw na sa reverb lalo na sa mga guitar ballads IMO

that dude from Firehouse who's name seems to escape me just now...

and Paul Gilbert's tone from his solo albums
ako din. i dont like a lot of those 80s hair metal tones kasi they always seemed to have a hint of chorusing going on. awesome guitar players for sure but the tones lacked balls.

paul gilbert's tone from the first few mr. big albums was sort of like that din.

i think i dont like most of hendrix's recorded tones too. but, hey, thats jimi. he transcends tone.

i dont get why people rave over joe perry's tone. angus young, i get. slash, yes din. bluesbreakers era clapton, yes. joe perry, vintage or modern, di ko gets.

One Day Remains album?  Have a listen at Blackbird, medyo iba yung recording setup ng lead tones nya.  But then again, he's not a mid-heavy lead player as he's going for the edgy lead sounds, so I understand it will no doubt come across as weak and thin to some.   (read the story of his first signature PRS, the one where he sent back a McCarty, you can see what he's going for generally tone-wise)

I think Myles (the singer/co-guitarist) complements what he's lacking in tone.  Big beefy mids and also a much dynamic player than Mark IMO.  Sa Blackbird album pa lang sya nag-contribute sa guitars.

Tsaka adik din sa wah yang hayup na yan (MT).   :-D  Same way kirk hammett is incurable.

tony macalpine's shrapnel years album. masyadong ma reverb. pero syempre yung skill galing.

EJ's tone is i think great. needs a lot of precision on the player's part kung hindi huling huli mga sabit

Petrucci's low gain tone is one of the best settings ( listen to 'the truth' evening with rudess and petrucci)

wow.... didn't realize that quite a few people here don't dig Vai's tone. While I agree that some songs sound very processed, justifiable naman... he likes weird sounds eh. Pero kung medyo steady lang... his tone in Tender Surrender is the shiz!

Ako naman... as much as I love Extreme's Pornagraffiti! I think Nuno's tone on the album could use a little more meat on it.  Loved his tone on Waiting for the Punchline though.  :-)

Also, +1000 on Dave Mustaine's tone in general, I do not like it at all.  Imagine how much better Countdown to Extinction would be if it had half the heaviness of the rhythm guitars on Metallica's Black Album.

Since the album Fahrenheit, I started to dislike Steve Lukather's (TOTO) tone. His worst tone for me is on the Absolutely Live album.

Neal Schon (JOURNEY/SANTANA) - great composition, great band leader, great arrangements. But his tone for me is pretty shrill. And he is already using a Les Paul at that. When he was in Santana, you will know immediately if he was the one playing the solo - the one who has a sharper tone.

Vernon Reid (LIVING COLOR) - over processed. Tapos hindi pa malinis tumipa. Loads of times, he is just like running his fingers randomly on the fretboard.

Bob Hartman (PETRA) - too much midrange and no ooommpphhh! In the Christian Rock community, he is hailed as one of the best guitar players of that genre.

Johnny Winter - like Neal Schon, it is too shrill. But the approach to solos are still amazing!

masyado mataas treble niya pre, lalo na sa Far Beyond Driven album. Wala ako makuha dun sa kanta na Strength Beyond Strength. Lalo na dun sa intro riff. The guitar tone sounds like one big chainsaw.

I never liked phasey, chorusy sounding guitars. So, Satriani's tone is my choice. His sound/tone is too, ummm, contrived? IMHO, I feel that the tone of his is a failed attempt to be original and good at the same time. It is original, yes AFAIK, but it failed miserably.  I'm a fan of GUITAR>OD (sometimes with WAH)>AMP set up.

@ ROB/ROLEXM

Kung 'di ito yung hiyaw, ito yung phasey, chorusy tone.  :-D

Tone's = contraction of the two words "tone is".

Tones = plural form of "tone", as in iba-ibang mga samo't-saring mga tunog.

I'm not sure if this guy's tone is venerated, I guess it is for lo-fi fans.  I like Jack White's (white stripes era) basic lo-fi tone using a big muff.  But whenever he engages the whammy for 2 octaves up, it just makes me cringe.

Especially the G3 version. I think tonewise, he wins over Vai and Satch here.

Medyo lubog nga lang si EJ sa mix sa G3 '96. That's what usually happens when the highs are rolled off a bit more than usual.

Personally, I don't like Jimmy Page's live tone. Just not my thing.

i like the dime tone. it is unique. and served the pantera sound really well. it's solid state, cold, sharp and extreme. but it worked!  i don't like pantera that much. but i dig what dime did. it wouldn't sound the same if he had a marshall or boogie with the mids set high.

but yeah, i get it when people say they don't like the dime tone.

thanks! :) reading his posts..

just wow.... sorry for the OT. back to regular programming po.

I saw Jimi Hendrix live, at Woodstock and at the Monterrey Pop Festival, and had a back stage pass at Monterey and talked to him for about 5 minutes. He was real cool, soft spoken and funny.

Jimi Hendrix was not drafted. He joined the Army in the late 50's and was a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne Division before Vietnam. He got injured on a jump and was medically discharged. He never saw combat.

Be well,

Doc

I see Satch and Vai here a lot.

While I'm not a fan of their tone, these 2 guitarists have a different tone every album. So you need to qualify which album(s) you don't like. Otherwise, I would say you're a hater.

Satch's best tone is probably "black swans and wormhole wizards". Either that or "is there love in space"

As for Vai, his tone in "alien love secrets" is probably the only one which I like. He sounds a lot better live though.

EVH's tone I don't like, and his tone pretty much doesn't change... him and Eric Johnson. I do like EJ's clean tone.

Not really venerated pero any distorted tone na kumukuha ng distortion sa mixing console. JHS made a pedal out of it (JHS Color Box). I like the clean up until the “edge of break up” tone pero pag fully distorted na...medyo cringeworthy na para sa kin.
