Let's talk SG! (aka The SG Club)
« on: October 05, 2006, 07:39:43 AM »
Hey! I finally got my hands on an SG. This is a cherry red Epi copy.  Sounds pretty good, but better when I slapped on better and heavier strings and made some minor adjustments.

Here's a short vidclip of mine:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gKXaqN_Vfss
* Watching and hearing it now, I think I overdid the overdrive on the amp :-( *

What do I like about SGs and this one in particular?
- neck pu tone is a tad clearer than most LPs (which are usually muddy)
- i don't have a dead spot in the 24th fret area since it's not directly over a pu (as on LPs)
- higher upper fret access vs strats, teles and even LPs
- bright and biting bridge tone
- twangy and clear in-betw tone
- light and the body edges don't dig into my body

One thing I don't like is that the neck tends to tip downwards so you have to counter it by pushing the body down w/ the right arm.

What do you like about your SG and why did you want one in the first place?  They seem to be sought after these days, even RJ copies.

Discuss.

I like your SG and your playing style. Glad to know you can play blues well. Have some catchingup to do.

nice hehehe a G400 hehehe.. ayos na !! derekslim !

with my g400 faded ...i bought it because of aesthetic reasons.   i told someone to buy it for me.. actually its the epi sg vs epi dot es335 ..buti na lang sg na pili ko..next time na yung dot..

likes :

1.) lightweight -- its so light , i can walk around the house all day while playing it.. and i'll never have back problems (Machine_head buy urself an SG   )

2.) neck pup tone & in-between tone-- before i was saying its muddy , now im a believer thats its sings its all about tone control..  :D  just like deltaslim said, its clearer than most LP .. also tama rin si deltaslim re in-between tone ..twang maganda for rhythm parts

3.) neck access -- best trait ng sg, compare to strat.. no distractions ..

4.) grover tuners !!

dislikes :

1.) neck -- (epi sg) almost all players from everythingsg.com have the same problem , the neck is too heavy (one piece neck) it's not balance. but as you play more often , you'll learn to find its balance position..

2.) bridge pup -- i find it too thin sounding , i use tone control to tweak it ..pero thin parin..delta , does your bridge pup sound the same ?

3.) strap lock -- you need to have a strap lock !! or a nice strap with durable ends..its scary sometimes to wank your guitar hehehe..

4.) tune-o-matic bridge -- i often play with my right hand resting on the bridge...the saddles is somewhat woobly.. its been a problem before. i had it intonated ok na.. but im thinking of upgrading next time.

5.) toggle switch -- i got my sg without hardcase. with softcase, naiipit yung switch , after a while the toggle gets loose and you'll have problems  switching pups (i put styrofoam in the switch para hindi maiipit pag softcase gamit ko) . also the switch was somewhat cheap (i changed it). and i also dont like the color of the ends (orange!!)

6.) nut -- its plastic , i had problems with intonation when i first got it. na iipit yung strings..

overall .. with all the upgrades and perfect setup, my "devil - do - cry " is still my no. 1

haha... Derek Slim? Pwede!  *How I wish...*

Ganda pala nung iyo... faded cherry?  Nice.  :-)

Re bridge pu... Well one man's "thin" is another man's "bright" and "biting".  These will do fine for me. The tone knob tames it fine.  Pero ano ba string gauge mo -- I put in 11s on this one. Big diff.

I will prolly visit Arie and have him do a thorough setup and upgrade the nut to bone. Any other nice tweaks for SGs while I'm at it?

BTW, speaking of upgrades...  my SG is now a prime candidate for a Harmonic Design Z90 transplant.  Para mas raw, gnarly, (mid-)biting, and dynamic yung tone.  Will report here results when I've gotten around to it.

re upgrades ... pag naka bili ako ng new pup's im thinking of doing coil tap. i wonder how a single coil sound sa sg.. kasi paminsan hinahanap ko parin tunog ng single coil  :x

ayos yung gawa ni arie sa bone nut and setup sa sg . the other bone nut i had was too narrow tska again .. intonation problems pa rin.. it was my first time sa guitarhospital nung pinagawa ko sg ko...buti na aayos din.

HD Z90s are P90s in a HB size and shape that screws onto the pu ring.  No wood modifications involved. I have them in my Hondo 335 now and was just wondering about potential tone enhancements to both: more mids for the SG, clearer and chimey tone for the 335.

Ok ung kay Toybitz na Greco... Vintage na rin kung tutuusin kaya inaabangan ko nga malaglag sa palad ko eh. :-)

I saw a Tokai SG sa Singapore a couple of months ago.  If I hadn't bought a Tele already, I'd have that SG now.

I like the SGs because they are light and very playable.  I have a Gibson faded cherry Special that I have changed the pups to a nickel covered 490T and 490R, which I prefer, look wise.  I use 10s D'Addario XLs on both my SGs.  I seem to like the thicker neck of the SGs.  Only problem is they are neck heavy.  Solution is to use thicker straps.  Tone-wise, with the original pick ups, they seem to be a bit darker, but have seemingly sweet highs.  They are great guitars.

I was made to understand the Epiphone Elitist 61 re-issues are very good, even better than the build of the Gibson faded specials that I have.  The pick ups are USA types and they sound superb, according to those who own them - and swear by them.  I have yet to try one.

PS.  It is a must to have strap locks on SGs.  The position of the neck strap button is rather off, you need to secure your straps well.  Schaller strap locks work well.

FWIW

Here are my SGs.

Standard SG Ebony with 498T and 490R humbuckers and Faded Cherry before nickel pup cover change.

Faded Cherry Special SG with 490T and 490R with new covered pups.

guitars: gretsch 6122-1962; rickenbacker 330; epi elite casinos; gibson les paul standards, tribute, faded, double cut; gibson sg standards, faded; fender strats MIAs, MIJs, MIMs; fender tele MIAs, MIJs, MIMs; etc

Yo Bro,

Hindi ko pa binenta yun SG.

Pareho naman ng kahoy.  Malamang iba sa PUs at machine heads.

Mukhang iba din yun look sa neck joint.  Smooth yun neck joint nun akin.  1 of a kind.  Wala pa ako nakikitang kapareho kahit sa net.

Meng, Lakas ng GAS ko ngayon for this:

Edwards E-LP-85SD/P

Parating na this week yung Bacchus na LP. Baka maibenta ko agad yun para pambili ng Edwards. Lakas talaga tama ko sa P-90 na Gold Tops.
