When we talk about music, nationality and place of origin is a non-issue (IMHO). Why? Because music transcend boundaries. And frankly, here in the Philippines, there are very few entities who produce Filipino Music in the strictest sense (use of indigenous instruments and local language and scales).

That is why in the strictest sense, there will always be 'foreign' influence in local artists output (from language used to instruments to scales).

* * * * *

On-Topic :) The Local Bands (generally) Today are spending more than they earn from playing. It's the love of their craft that keep 'em going :)

so local bands today is more of entertainers than artist.

aling local bands ba yung underground or yung mainstream?

Magandang tanong Manong Chai :) Maraming unsigned bands na very mainstream ang tunog (pop rock-ish, veering to novelty). Nothing wrong about pop-rock-like sound, but you can't classify it as underground/indie dahil lang sa hindi sikat :)

sir qroon, i meant underground is not mainstream, lahat ng genre may mainstream and may underground, mapa pop, metal, rock, jazz, blues, etc. yung unsigned artist na tunog mainstream eh dahil yun ang aim nila to be maisteream, to play what people wants them to play, they are not underground they are only unsigned and may underground na sikat dahil may underground listeners, what makes them underground is di sila radio freindly, di sila bibilhin ng masa, dahil ginagwa nila at sinasabi nila ang gusto nilang gawin at hindi sila trip ng producers, they need to sell.

eg. belle and sebastian, pop alternative, kahit na may nag produce di pa rin sila nag mainstream. narinig mo ba sila sa love radio?
WDOUJI, Witch Doctor Of Underground Jazz Improvisation, im sure sikat sila, pero underground kasi di sya trip ng office mate mo, dahil kilala nyang jazz artist eh si sitti.

music is a form of art, art should be a tool to refine humanity and our culture, thats why maraming nag protest kay caparas, kaya tama ka dapat xerex.

example then Dianna Krall, di ko sya trip dati dahil kala ko pogi jazz, pero nung napanood ko yung prefomance nya sa montrel jazz festival, damn, di pala sya ganun, dahil iba yung image nya sa mainstream, kagagawan ng mga mtv and radio station yan.

you clearly are confused between "underground" and "unsigned" ...

you definition fits the "unsigned" category.

anwyay, just to help you... something is underground if it has a SCENE backing it up ... in pinas, its metal, punk and even those brit sounding indie stuff. as far as jazz and blues are concerned, nope it doesnt have a scene, just some musicians and random appreciators... therefore, there really is no jazz and blues underground as far as pinas is concerned...

The Local Bands Today are:

Mainstream - parang wala na ung musika mula sa puso... kasi sinusunod lang nila kung anu gusto ng tao..
Indie - artistic... kung anung gusto nila nagagawa nila...
both - LAGING HINAHALINTULAD SA BANDA MULA SA IBANG BANSA...

tsaka parang daming POGI BAND ngaun... hehehehe

...are descendants of Eraserheads' "Ultraelectromagneticpop!"and "Circus", and, Radiohead's Pablo Honey (and not The Bends). Now that they are in the recording business, local bands should explore further (and deeper) into their musical roots. There is a music world outside of the 90s. They can sell their soul if they have to. After all, this is all about "the music" and not prostitution.

Eraserheads admitted that their music was not purely Beatles sound. It's true. They did not even sound like one. Their music was post-punk with a blend of pinoy pop. In my opinion, the epic "Ang Huling El Bimbo" was not entirely influenced by the Beatles (or 60s) music but rather by Harrison's "Isn't It A Pity" (a post Beatles music from an ex-Beatle). Both songs have the same chord patterns (G-A(7)-C-G). Only, El Bimbo was tuned at a fret lower. At that time, they were headed for a peak.

On the other hand, Radiohead combined Smiths-like sound with the grunge. And the result was "Creep" and the first album. Radiohead moved on with the Bends. A big leap from the first lp. This time, they were musical explorers and operatic. They were shaping up the second half of the 90s sound.

Local bands should not be afraid to deviate from usual stuff. It may break them...but it can also be a breakthrough, music and otherwise.

May humble, may mayabang.
May professional, may immature.
May matiyaga, may tamad.
