I think(???) hopefully i am correct.. Feb 23 sa Coconut Palace.. sorry to be so (^%#*@) but whoever is (DIS)organizing this event needs a lesson on effective marketing.. last year I was able to watch this event (??) sa harbour square, free of course (but again very few people went kasi it wasn't advestised. with the 'beautiful manila bay sunset' as back drop sa stage. and the best of all NOBODY knew that San Miguel Negra was being offered FREE!!!! (I was looking around where to buy beer to enjoy the show and lo and behold I 'accidentally' found a small sign at the back end of stage na may SMB sign and as I was about to pay they said it was free!!!..

Tickets is being sold at STARBUCKS (I hope I am right... again due to lack of information kasi)..
IS ANYONE HERE HAS A DETAILED INFORMATION ???

Heard that the first one was plagued with so many problems also.

Is it true that one of the international guest artists did not even have transportation from the hotel to the venue and they just requested him (?) to ride a local cab instead?

Sana this thing could be cleared from perhaps the organizers or anyone from the Jazz Festival Secretariat.

Basta I saw this with my own eyes last year - the writer promoting the concert (apparently still young and did not read the press release carefully) kept on promoting - special guest ,  world renowned jazz diva, DEODATA.

Yup! Hopefully someone who wouldn't take advantage of Pinoy musicians while treating foreign musicians like royalty.

Last year the locals weren't paid. This year the locals are being paid merely 1k per head while the poreyndyers are being paid lots.

At least that's what i hear.

Ewan.

What time will master Airto be performing?

If it's gonna be at night, I'll surely miss it because I have a gig.  If it's gonna be in the afternoon or early evening, I'm still not sure because I won't be able to take out my car due to color-coding.

Airto will play around 10:00pm, most probably. Although the concert (according to the ticket) starts at 8:00 pm.... bit surprised and sad (hu hu hu) that very few people, specially drummers and percussionist and EVEN jazz players are not that interested to watch this very very rare concert of a truly world class, world and jazz musicians....
I was able to see a 'glimpse' of airto's talents last night at the greenbelt (where we closed the jazz show). He just arrive last night and went straight to dinner and went up the stage for a few minutes...
Most people in makati (the 'yuppie crowd) does not know him. Very few knew flora purim and those who knew her only know the song "Bridges" (tsk tsk tsk tsk) I hope this song is NOT SUNG TONIGHT for god's sake! Flora Purim's repertoire of jazz and world music song is a lot lot more than "Bridges" . perhaps this is the only song known by our so called jazz singers....

no wonder nothing will ever come out of the philippine music scene. even while we have so many talents around...nuff said...

Sorry can't seem to keep my hands (or rather my mouth) shut...
remember the time chick corea (yes!!!he played at the PICC (2x na, 2 x i watched). the last with david  wekl  (forgot the right spelling sorry) and john patitucci on accoustic bass..

the place was almost empty except for the really very very few enthusiastic real jazz audience around (almost all of us were either musicians or jazz music lovers) and i thought to myself... if this place is bombed tonight practically the jazz scene will be wiped out that entire night.. At some point chick called on all the audience to 'come' down near the stage to watch them play. But he enjoyed playing the whole night because the of very apreciative but few audience....

Am already close to the music industry and I still am not sure when the dates and venues are.  Add to that thefact that sobrang mahal naman ng tickets!  We can only refer to last year's turn-out  (with Deodato and Patti Austin, I heard) and see how dismal the attendance will be.

Bad pa kasi ang Marketing and pre=promotions. As an avid jazz fan myself, nakakahinayang tuloy ang mga nangyari.

But I wouldn't mind hearing Flora's version of Bridges.  For me, it will always be her version which I love.  I still remember grooving over and over her song during one lonely Christmas aternoon in the mid-Seventies.
Iba-iba lang talaga ang approach ni Flora Purim - di ba she also did this song "Angels" na talaga namang oozing with commercialism?

I wouldn't be their disappointment if not for the so-expensive tickets!

I never knew it was Gng. Purim who sang "Bridges". Medyo di ko trip kasi parang nagasgas na sa mga singing contests and I'd like to assume those same contestant hardly knew her body of work. IMO I don't think her song "Angel" was commercial. Whenever I play the song to my friends who are into pop stuff they know the tune but don't know the title. Mas mabenta kasi dito sa bansa natin yung may lyrics e even if the song is titled "Aserehe" or whatever.  :-P

Flora Purim was a couple of years ahead from the Sergio Mendes version of Bridges. parang 1974 pa ata.

There is an excellent legit compilation of her best work in the 70's including mga return to forever stuff, Jobim covers and also Angels and Bridges.

Coffee and Bossa
The Chillout sound of Flora Purim.  definitely not chillout stuff.

Just got back from the Flora + Airto performance. Great fun with a crack band. Played "Light As A Feather" from the Chick Corea days and "Bridges" among other stellar tunes. Unlike last year's fest, this one was well attended despite the lack of publicity. Anywhere from 50-70% of the seats were taken at the height of the concert. They ended the set with a batucada, and did another one for an encore. People were up bopping and dancing... very cool. Really good to see it so well attended and by a lot of musicians -- the Jazz dudes were out in force.

A bittersweet performance though: Airto was his usual sizzling self -- that right hand ride and punchy foot are truly signatures -- but Flora's voice is going. Little of the flexibility, range, and plasticity of the Flora of old -- phrasing was still there, but her voice was tentative and unsteady -- sad to see, but everyone there was super appreciative of the effort and history that this lady represents.

The surprise bonuses were in the warm up bands: Bo Razon's percussion ensemble was fun. Guarana sounded pretty good. Sitti's reputation is well deserved -- solid crossover material and a great voice. The band that backed her up was smoking -- Erskine Basilio on an amplified nylon string guitar was fantastic and tasty, and the bass player had chops up the wazoo.

I have that album, it's a local compilation by MCA Universal. I guess they thought they could ride on the local bossa nova craze by calling it "Coffee and Bossa, The Chillout Sound of Flora Purim". The first two songs are the commercial hits "Angels" and "Bridges" - but after you get over that hump, a lot of the material is really good jazz stuff from her first three albums on Milestone records (I had them on vinyl, but hadn't heard them in a while). In fact the instrumental solos are pretty energetic so they are anything but "Chill Out".

It's a very good buy, and I must've had some premonition when I bought it and played it two weeks non stop on my car stereo.

The "return to forever" material here is "Light As A Feather" and "500 Miles High" -- there are also a few other Chick Corea/Neville Potter compositions I don't remember as being in a RTF album. But the RTF material are not from RTF albums, they are from Flora's own albums. "Light As A Feather" was from Flora's first album, "Butterfly Dreams" and I recall the personnel were Stanley Clarke on acoustic bass (he also produced that album), George Duke on keyboards, Joe Henderson on sax, and of course Airto on drums and percussion.

I ended up going, straight out of the office. Gritted my teeth and plunked down 1,200 for the cheapest ticket (it turns out you could sit anywhere, so it made no sense to buy anything pricier)

In fact I may have gone there too early, because I had to endure the opening bands Guarana and Sitti. Not that they aren't very good in their own right if you actually went out of your way to watch them, but because the crowd was waiting to hear Flora and Airto, it was a little excruciating having to wait it out. Sitti is visually a stunner so now I know why Aya Yuson wants to date her. But I actually got bored waiting, I ended up surfing on my 3G phone and kept on going to the beer bar for drinks. Saw a lot of people from the Pinoyjazz list like Obese one Kenobi. I also saw Purplehaze with a camera and then regretted not having bringing my camera equipment in my car that day, all I had was a crappy cameraphone. By the bar, Lourd de Veyra was funny, complaining about the bar running out of beer.

But then Airto's band came on stage, its like the energy lifted the whole stage. After having to listen to the local bands try to approximate a Brazillian vibe, hearing real Brazillians play the music was like drinking a shot of espresso after a lifetime of swilling down Blend 45. I was also inspired to write a review for www.philmusic.com. (Hope purplehaze sends me his photos so I can post it).

By the way, was the overweight girl on stage with the killer voice actually Flora and Airto's daughter? She sounded just like Flora when she was younger. The real Flora can't hit the high notes as effortlessly anymore.

Undoubtedly.... the brazilians are THE BRAZILIANS. The real deal.

Am just thankful that some pinoys haven't let versions of this music just disappear from the scene, crossover or not. Joey P. and I were saying that the local bands are to be commended for getting up there and doing it in an entertaining way, with some great playing from individual guys.  What drove us nuts were the plumed and costumed dancers -- some of those bodies had no right being in those outfits -- Ugh.

Don't know if the big girl was their daughter. But wow -- what pipes. Very bluesy too.

I did some quick Internet research, yes that robust girl is Flora and Airto's daughter alright. Her name is Diana Booker and she's married to the band's percussionist Krishna Booker. Diana has inherited her mother's face and hair and that voice --- sounds just like Flora in her twenties. You could close your eyes and not tell the difference except for having less of a Portugese accent because she's an American. Her rendition of "Bridges" with just electric piano and voice, first sung in the original portugese, then segued to English, sent chills up my spine, and I don't even like the song all that much! Also dug that Nina Simone blues song.

Diana and Krishna's own music borders on nu jazz and triphop, a little taste of what we heard in the concert. I also find it interesting that Flora's daughter (a singer) wound up marrying a percussionist as well.

Some info on Diana: http://www.lamusicacademy.com/departments/vocals/instructors.asp

Other trivia - Krishna is Wayne Shorter's nephew.

I also checked up on the bassist Gary Brown - he's American as well. Maybe the other musicians are american as well, but hanging out with Flora and Airto allows them to "carry" the brazillian vibe quite well.
