Learn the scales BUT instead of always going up and down them, try doing it per string or like per two strings..now your more melodic than shredding...=]

there's a good idea pards hehe

another that i do is follow a basic melody that goes around the progression, then to add variety i just speed up the up/down bits hehe

focus on chord tones.  :-)
Eto.

Hitting 14, 15, 17, etc. Ng paulit ulit parang boring di ba. Kumbaga. Puro orgasmic notes(15, 17,) na lang. Dapat haloan mo ng foreplay notes. :-)
Just always.. always.. make sure you're having fun  :-)

improvisation is like swimming... you may read all the books, and have all the great advise about swimming but you will never learn how to swim unless you jump into the pool..

Ako bahala na kung ano lumabas. There are good lines and there are bad lines pero as long as I'm expressing what I'm feeling at that moment in time I'd be happy with how it turns out. I never plan my solos. Mas exciting saken sumampa sa stage kase even I get surprised with what comes out. And then I review the videos of the gig and I say.. "Good God ang sagwa nun ah.." haha!

It's my answer to the thread title papi. Of course it will not work for everyone nor is it advisable for beginners. One day I just realized I'm both too lazy to prepare and too yabang to be comfortable with being unprepared. There are times it ends up as a train-wreck but, fortunately for me, my bandmates are fine with it. We just want to have fun lang naman hehe.

Kung advise naman kay TS.. Mahirap mag improv without knowledge of at least the basics. I'd say learn the theory first, appreciate how everything affects each other, realize the connection between what we play and what the audience feels as a result of it, then once your comfortable with your knowledge and your skill.. banat!  :-)

Just always.. always.. make sure you're having fun  :-)

feelings! +1 diyan...

First time ko maglead sa isang banda, i actually play bass, then nagshift kami one time na nag semi-acoustic kami, i learned their song on guitar, kinapa ko rin yung mga fills, pero nung di ko nakuha yung adlib, i made my own, after hours of playing it, I already felt the notes, and yung nagawa ko, it made sense naman. :) share lang.
PS the next gig I sucked, full band na, wala ko sa tono.

honestly, konti lang yung alam kong scales, i dont know when to use the modes or shall i say i dont know them at all.hehe ang tanging ginagawa ko lang is jinajam ko yung kanta over and over hanggang makuha ko yung notes na gusto ko. sa daang kanta na alam ko wala pang 40% yung plakado hehe

gawa ka ng sarili mong pattern using the scales at importante kung ano ang nasa puso mo... un ang lalabas na tunog mo at skills.

mas maganda gawa ka ng jam track or download ka ng back tracks para i jam mo mag isa... mahirap kasi kabisado mo lang na wala kang ka jam. kapag may kumpleto instrumento na ang hirap sabayan...

Scales. Chord tones. Feel.

+1.  i also put emphasis on vibrato, dynamics and sustaining the right note.

you can choose "feel", "heart", or even "follow the chords"...

learn a scale...Pentatonic, Diatonic, Minor scales...etc...

huwag mo muna pagsabayin pag aralan lahat...

atleast master one scale before going to the next scale lesson...

every scale has there modes...eto ung sinasabing position mo ng box type scale.

learn there shapes and if you have more time try to train your ear to recognize the notes.

learn all the box shapes all through out the fretboard...

memorize runs and licks...

by doing this magkakaruon ka ng idea kung paano mag-construct ng solos of your own...

until they're good enough to produce a sound of there own...

duon ka magkakaruon ng inspiration and drive to be a good guitar player...

there's tons of knowledge kasi kahit sa isang 4 note lick...

repeat the runs and licks as much as you can when you practice...

para ma-perfect mo ung ginagawa mo...

repeatition is the mother of education...

and most important...don't rush things...

do it slowly but surely...

try to make a lead line using 2-3 notes lang.  :-D masaya sya, vary mo kung kelan mo patatagalin yun note/s na yan, mapapansin mo na ang 2-3 notes executed differently (half note, whole note, bend, haluan ng effects etc) parang ang layo na ng nararating. and its fun!

di kelangan ng pabilisan parati to come up with a fantastic lead line (palusot ng isang taong hindi shredder  )

pero try nyo, masaya hehe
