drum shoes
« on: December 29, 2006, 12:18:37 AM »

Yup, gumagamit ako ng shoes kapag nagdu-drums.  Nakasanayan na kasi.

When I shop for shoes, I look for three things...  it must be light, it must be very comfortable, and it must have soft soles.  If a pair of shoes has all those three characteristics, that would be comfy enough for me to use for drumming and for walking (I do a lot of walking).

During practices or certain impromptu situations, I can get away with sandals.

When I was starting out, I can play drums barefoot.  But nowadays I can't.

I use different pedals din dahil tamad ako magdala ng sarili kong peds sa practices or gigs.. so, If the pedal's tension is set to high and is unadjustable, crappy, yung tipong yung cam niya eh sumasayad na sa batter head, etc and everything na parang mabigat na ang feel ng pedal, I use barefoot..

cheers!!!

im weird, kapag maganda yung pedal (dw5000, elim, IC) barefoot. kapag cheapo pedal i prefer shoes or sandals with thick soles coz i feel that the thickness compensates with the delayed response of the pedal

tama yun... pag maganda yung peds... less stress to your foot/feet kaya ok lang barefoot/feet :D
pag matigas yung pedal kailangan cushions.. hehehe

soft and bendable soles hanggang sa heel. tapos perfect fit, ewan ko i haven't tried playing with big shoes, like boots etc. but some drummers i see wear heavy shoes. hehehe siguro i'm not really good. happy holidays mga kapatid! godbless. :-D

My drum kit is inside my room so I learned to play barefoot. I don't feel the difference when I wear different kinds of shoes  :?

this is a good argument often neglected.

drum shoes for foot technique is essential.  it occurs that one may practice with flip flops or barefoot then when gig comes they wear leather shoes or rubber shoes, something their not used to which may affect playing ..naninibago coz of weight/ feel / configuration.  though i must agree over the years of practice or performance its not gonna matter.. this is my observation though

HEEL TOE technique
i need to improve this pero i use only 1 foot technique or at least proficient ako sa heel toe technique na in doing fast (16th notes) on single bass drum pedal. I hit the first note with my toe followed by dropping my heel for the 2nd note. this sometimes give an even attack and dynamics on solid funky grooves though there are speed limitations.

for the HEEL TOE technique, since you foot goes forward. you need a comfortable shoe that has a thin sole layer, and yung dulo ng shoes pointed or maliit..what your after is a shoe that exactly fits you, nothing too big in front or mag-iba yung feel and haharang sa harap. the best shoe ive used for this technique (what im used to) is a NIKE retro shoe. yung style tipong circa early 80s. ill try to post pic and describe why. for those na medyo matanda na rin tulad ko...there used to be badminton shoe called DRAGON FLY (china)

yung isang technique ..im nt sure what you call it but most technically proficient drummers do it

HEEL UP ata....its the one taught by dave weckle.  when doing fast single drum pedal notes..ex.. continuous samba  grooves. when you put your foot down on the first note then you slide twist your foot further to produce the second note.  this is ideal for drummers with large feet. shoes for this aside from those mentioned above medyo madulas ang sole since you do sliding.
It's not the number of notes you can play, but the number of rests in between..to come up with a tasteful, soulful piece...
