Zoom H4 (or Samson G-Track) anyone?
« on: June 29, 2008, 07:10:31 PM »
Any of you guys tried it?

http://www.zoom.co.jp/english/products/h4/

I'm planning to use it for recording demos (or low-fi cuts for direct digital/online distro) of solo or group using all-acoustic instruments.

hey joric,

Nino Avenido/circus studios has that. He gave a demo last year. Amazing sound quality. recording and editing on the fly. helps if you have a stand for it. what he did was recorded his elec guitar, drums, bass and keyboards. edited everything on the unit. rock!

Thanks for the info, turi.  Well, if it's good enough for Nino, then...  ;-)

Very handy and cool to use. The polar mics are good for recording live bands for a demo to be used as guide tracking or submitted to an arranger or simply for archiving. The neutrix xlr/trs inputs also comes in handy. And its phantom. A very powerful device for such a small size. And if it doesnt satisfy you, you can always connect it to a PC for further editing via USB. Can also function as your audio interface.

How much does this one cost? I would recommend this especially since the 16gig SD card is now available at cdrking at really cheap price. Great for recording a whole concert or gig. hehehe.

Add... only draw back is it can only do 16bit. But cool thing is it can record live audio straight to mp3 - means more record time.

Well, it's really been a toss up between these two.  Right now, here's how I see it:

Zoom H4

Pros:
- loaded with features (but more than I might need)

Cons:
- a big investment for an amateur recordist like me
- UI is not, well, usable (esp. for 4-track recording on the unit itself)

G-Track
Pros:
- simple design that does all the things i need from a USB mic (but not more)
- smaller investment

Cons (not really):
- no 4-track recording (but I'd prefer to do this on my PC anyway)

Right now, I'm leaning towards the G-Track again... If Audiophile has 'em for a good price, I might already get it.
