want a classic example of selling out?

jerome abalos.  vox ng death by stereo, predator at majesty nung LA 105 days...all of these are metal bands, pero yung death by stereo talaga yung medyo naging successful, largely due to their radio hits "tonyo" and "swapang"...

tapos biglang nagpalit ng genre nung down period ng pinoy rock scene.   gulat na lang ako nung narinig ko ang "larawang kupas" sa radyo while on the way to work...the DJ introduced it as "bagong kanta ni jerome abalos"...

although AFAIK, balik-metal na si jerome...with a reformed death by stereo.  correct me if i'm wrong...

Yeah, he wanted to be the one to feed his his wife and kids, you know. I guess that selling out even if it meant that your family starves is just plain wrong.

bravo, people!

from a professional musician's standpoint..... I would take an offer to play for Cueshe, Six Cycle Mind or even for Sam Milby's band.

It's hell lot of money and opportunity for me, and a fresh way to learn about pop music as well.

its not about selling out.... its about re-marketing an artist to sell more.

but from a fan-boy standpoint, I should refuse and stick to the ideals EVERYONE has put in place that these bands are sell-outs and "they suck".

Nothing is wrong with selling out.

The more record companies earn, the more it keeps the music industry alive.

Its the only way we can fight and survive piracy losses..... to fight back with legit sales from artists who "sellout".

If it we didn't, our music industry will die a natural death and succumb to piracy.

my own two cents of course.

dude, respect naman sa mga taong gusto ang coldplay. di naman lahat ng tao dito metalhead or mahilig sa mabigat na tugtugan eh. ako mahilig ako sa mabigat na tugtugan pero naappreciate ko coldplay, and i see no problem with that.

one could change musical direction without selling out. ano ba talaga ang ibig sabihin ng sell out?

maybe law of attraction.. :-D, the more you avoid selling out the more you get closer to it....as much as possible, we shouldn't be worried about money when creating music...I hope I could.. :-D..

tenang the secret! haha! natawa ko dun ah.

selling out? walang masama.

good points here (i deleted some lines in between to emphasize these points).

i just don't get it why some people don't want to sell out.  aren't you playing music professionally to earn money?  if you don't want to earn money, then stick to playing in a garage or in a room.

selling out doesn't necessarily entail losing identity but, as mentioned above, re-marketing the artist to sell more.  this actually benefits both the artist and the production outfit.

SuS!

SELLING OUT means compromising your vision and artistic INTEGRITY for money, attention and media exposure. You can have those three naman without trashing out your creative vision right? NIN, Radiohead, Megadeth?

+111111.  i wholeheartedly agree.

(though i have to take exception to megadeth's horrendous "risk" album...otherwise they've been great!)

that's why we have our day jobs...or sometimes, night jobs para sa mga taga-kolsenter...

for me, i couldn't care less if people dig our music, as long as we get respect.  if we stick to our guns and become rock stars somehow, eh di well and good.  if not, then at least we have the satisfaction of playing gigs, having a solid fanbase, and having recorded output.

do i really need to state the obvious?  i was talking about the AMOUNT of money involved in selling out VS. not selling out.

i guess we all have different definitions of selling out.  yours is a worst-case scenario.  i meant selling out in the truest sense of the phrase.  where did you get the notion that selling out means compromising vision and artistic integrity for money, attention and media exposure?  this may be true to some...but not to all.

now this is a more appropriate way of putting it. :-)

ang point ko lang kasi, when we play music, we would want it more if we get paid for our material or our performance as compared to pro-bono gigs diba?  i mean let's not be hypocrites here to say that we don't want to earn money from music.

the question here is, is selling out really synonymous to loss or artistic integrity and creativity?  i think not.

you can only "sell out" when you identify yourself with a specific scene specializing in subculture, namely metal, punk, etc. to name a few... those scenes have very strict rules and code of conduct.

so in a way, there are some bands that can never sell out no matter what they do ... take smashing pumpkins for example... eventhough Billy Corgan is really afraid of comprimising his intelligence to the public's perception, he is in a band that can NEVER sell out. that band has no scene, although it did spawn a fad called "alternative fad" - but never a scene (its debatable though since there's this thing called the 'indie scene' which i personally do not like and do not look into).

nowadays there are really vague music genres that are offshoots of metal, punk and whatever... they are mallcore and bands of those type will never sell-out. Like Korn... while its possible they may compromise their intellectual ability and artistic mission, they still do not have a real scene where they can be accused of 'selling out' on.

so do not worry ... i bet many of your favorite bands wont sell out ... they already either have, or its just its not possible for them to.

and just to clear things up from my side, here's an example:

1.) Metallica - yep, sold out. but that is because they outgrew thrash metal and of course, having more money isnt that bad really... besides, they have enough past album materials to satisfy those who miss the thrash metal version of them.

2.) Wolfgang - nope, they never sold out... sure they got more melodic and began ditching the high gain pedal and even the singer went on singing for a mainstream play... but they never sold out. they were never underground in the first place.

3.) Sandwich - again, nope. i am not very fond of them and i can tell you what i think of them in private, but they never sold out for the same reason as above.

-*-

what's wrong with selling out?

depends.

if you used a scene to launch your career, then you deserve to be forgotten.

if you outgrew the scene and did a U turn with the music ... well, its not really bad, but i really consider you changing your band name just to give respect to the scene that you once were part of. dont carry the same name just to get some underground credibility youve clearly outgrown.

if "selling out" means not being swayed by what your fans think what direction you should take then I dont think selling out is a bad thing.

to be honest? selling out becomes a dirty set of words...only if the artist thinks that there is something to it. LOL.
