Maganda to kung parang guitar camp..tapos meron mga magtuturo ng delta blues...or better yet lahat ng styles.... its a good way to share ur knowledge, though IMO the EB jams could suffice because by watching your fellow forumites strut their stuff, we learn lots from their applications.

OK yan kung itutuloy nu. Hope that my schedule cooperates.
si sir joric ok yan turo  :-D

mismo si joric  :-)

as for learning during the EB's, i don't think that will suffice as the event does not foster an "academic" atmosphere. It really is hard to walk up to a musican after his set and ask him "hey bro, what did you do at the second half of your guitar solo in the third song?" (after playing six tunes, hahahahah)

BAMF had a great plan for this, the thread -hopefully not buried- at the music school area. hand-outs, reference material to be given out to the folks in attendance and a vcd of the whole affair.

really well organized, with performances pa demonstrating the principles beinmg taught. damn, i'm excited thinking about what jazhombie, deltaslim and aya can teach!!!  :-)

Ituloy na dapat ito!

Tell you what; let's organize this now... Let's target Saturday, April 28, 2007. Hope the better guitarists in our group can attend, like Psychic Sushi etc. If not, let's push another date, like maybe Labor Day (Tuesday, May 1?) which is a holiday.

Time:
Option 1: 4 to 6 pm
Option 2: 6 to 8 pm
Option 3: Some other time still to be suggested

Venue: Anybody care to volunteer a place? Whatever happened to that UP-ISSI thing?
Option 1: Quezon City: UP Area
Option 2: Quezon City: Banawe area (will talk to somebody and maybe we can use their place there)
Option 3: some other place still to be volunteered

Format: Modular
Module 1: Basic Guitar Theory (unknown number of sessions yet)
Module 2: Advanced Theory (unknown number of sessions yet)
Module 3: Jam Sessions featuring specialists (classical, blues, jazz, rock, ska etc) - 1 session per special feature

Prerequisite skills to be allowed to join Module 1: knowledge of basic guitar chords (majors and minors, from A to G), basic strumming techniques, and the ability to play simple tunes on the guitar

Prerequisite gear: for basic  theory, an acoustic guitar. For the more advanced topics, an electric guitar, plus basic amp set-up.

Full workshop of maybe around 10 two-hour sessions, with a session scheduled every week... not everything needs to be live-sessions... some can be made online. I can volunteer my distance-learning (e-learning) site for the non-live classes if need be.

Any takers? Anybody care to help me organize this? If so please email me at

crammerjammer@gmail.com

so that we can brainstorm on a better plan than this crude outline I've made.

Looks like we have some people interested. Ok, let start exchanging some ideas first... maybe when we have a better idea of what to expect, more people will sign up.

First, it looks like I'll have to take the lead for now, so let's make this more manageable for me. Got any suggestions where to hold this thing?

Secondly, let's start exchanging ideas online, in this thread. Kasi, I'm not sure what's the skill level of the attendees.. hopefully you are all past the basics (basic chords- open string and fretted, strumming, and timing).

Anyway, here are my thoughts...
=====================================
Basis of Workshop
- Not one-upmanship… but sharing of ideas
- Not a music theory course, although music theory is important… this is more about guitar concepts for “non-schooled” players or for 'schooled' players' who want to have a different perspective
- Not a substitute to formal guitar lessons...

1.   Basic Guitar Module
•   Practice as the basis of technical skills
i.   Daily, consistent practice preferred over once-a-week crash schedules
ii.   Do stretching and limbering exercises before and after playing
iii.   Keep a relaxed posture and make sure your guitar is cradled appropriately to minimize physical injury
iv.   When using a pick, use up-down, up-down strokes or down-up, down-up strokes (suggest to accent the first stroke to keep time)
v.   Use a metronome or drum machine, and practice slow at first, eventually moving the tempo up and down, but keep consistently even notes
vi.   Use tablature and learn about bars, measures, tempo etc. because you will have to teach yourself down the line… it’s what everybody does to improve their craftsmanship and missing out on how to use tablature robs you of this opportunity to learn from others
vii.   Invest in dvd, cds, and tapes on guitar playing
•   Technical skills
i.   2-notes, 3-notes, 4-notes per string exercises using alternate picking
ii.   String-skipping exercises
iii.   Pull-on and off, Hammer-on and off
iv.   Bending
v.   Arpeggios and string-sweeping exercises
•   Despite your technical skills, the ultimate basis of how good you are is based on the sounds and tones that you produce in the end. Some tips include:
i.   Strive for musicality rather than exhibitionism (but don’t be shy to put your technical skills to the test in the service of musicality)
ii.   Build tension and make sure that these are all properly resolved (even dissonance or silence can be use to produce build-up and/or resolution)
iii.   Make sure that you are playing with the rest of the band, not playing against them… it’s the ensemble that matters in terms of musicality
iv.   Arranging and Creating music is as much a part of the magic of music; don’t ignore this
2.   Theory of Shapes
•   Chord Shapes and their extensions over the frets
•   Pentatonic scale and extensions over the fret
•   The Basic Major and Minor Scales, and playing them over the frets through different notes
3.   Improvisation Exercises
•   Blues and Rock
4.   Guest Guitarists (anybody care to sign-up as a guest guitaris?)
===============

Ok, that's all for now. If you are wondering what's my guitar style, it's a bit eclectic although I like to play loud and noisy music (the usual stuff, like Satriani, Vai, Malmsteen, Eric Johnson, Jeff Healey, Stevie Ray Vaughn, etc. which are mainly guitar-oriented music plus some originals); I'll be much obliged however if some jazz players etc. can join us... meantime, I'll be happy to share my ideas with you guys...

BAMF, got any place you can offer, for free?

Gusto ko sana marami magattend, guitarists with different styles, methods, perspectives, and approaches, and yes, skill levels. What I don't want to happen is to create an illusion of orthodoxy in the playing of the electric guitar as obviously, there's technically no right or wrong way of doing things although there are basic rules of thumb that can apply to most situations.  It should be clear to newbies that there's no "us and them", "us newbies and them masters"... to me playing guitar means lifelong learning and I am forever a student. Except perhaps for a few select people, there is no point in the learning process when one says "yes, I've arrived! I'm NOW a a guitar genius so I don't give a hoot to anybody" or crap like that. With a lot of attendees using different styles and approaches, that point becomes immediately clear to all, so I hope we get a decent number of attendees.

Let's still target April 28, say 4 to 7 pm... venue unknown. Part of the agenda for that meeting is the setting of a regular, monthly guitar clinic, and hopefully down the line, we can invite professional instructors (for a fee, of course... I hope you guys are not scandalized by that. If we pay peanuts, we get monkeys... since this first session is free, yup, that means I'm a monkey; until we can invite the pros at least)

I've been taking a look at other threads, especially the music school threads... looks like plenty of people can instruct us too (in addition to Aya Yuson, who says game na), there's Jazhombie, Deacon Blues, Psychic Sushi etc... Attention to these people, hope you can sign up!

Again, I'm volunteering to organize this... my email is at

crammerjammer@gmail.com

Please feel free to forward this email to the pertinent parties who might be interested.

G'day to all!

Hey way cool !

Tamang tama cram, dugtungan na lang tayo. We've been planning clinics since last year. Eto na yung situation :

- We have an inhouse projector already courtesy of eoi-jepoy
-Purple Haze is open to this as long as the time frame is within 5pm-9pm give or take an hour.
-Mag:net has a built-in projector screen and projector already. It's a small and cozy place.
-Kung gusto nyo ng cowboy cowboy, the lounge area of PIMP is still unfurnished and may be quite adequate for a crowd of give or take 15 people. That is, until the billiard table comes. We will need some monobloc chairs though.
- We have professional video equipment available. The session can be taped.

Contact me or Jepoy and pay us a visit. Perhaps you're the last piece of the puzzle that we need...a guy with some free time who can spearhead the project :D

Great, at least we know there's a place already! Thanks BAMF, yup, I'll  see if I can drop by or give you a ring as soon as everybody's ready, to nail down the details. (Lapit ka lang pala eh, I used to stay near corner of Calamba and D. Tuazon, a few houses away from STC. Now, I'm near del monte ave, but not quite too far from your shop.)

Anyway, for now, what we need are volunteer instructors.. I need to have a quick round-up of volunteers and what they plan to do, para tight yung mga presentations. We don't want to waste anybody's time... In the absence of any current plans, I'm planning to use the "Guitar Fretboard Logic" material of Bill Edwards as the basis of the workshop, plus exercises from the Petrucci videotape and some other materials... maybe a two-hour session, including short jams led by instructors...

Gear required: I suppose kanya-kanyang dala.. at the bare minimum, an acoustic guitar for participants para there's no need for amps, except maybe for the instructors, who will need to bring their electric guitars (usually, instructors prefer their own equipment kasi) and amps (especially kung may mga sounds na gustong palabasin that are unique to the instructor etc).

Maybe schedule is as follows:
1) 4 to 5 pm, registration, "getting to know you" stuff, setting up of guitars and amps and places, tuning of guitars etc.
2) 5 to 7 is the workshop time, broken down into 1 hour of ppt slides and demos, plus 1 hour of  Q&A, sharing of tips, brainstorming future clinics, and getting feedback to improve the quality of future clinics, then packing-up of equipment

Place should be cleared by 7 pm... para di naman dyahe duon sa may-ari ng lugar.

Calling the attention of volunteer instructors and participants... ituloy na natin ito!

Ok, here's an update.

I've finished a module and we could pilot the material this Saturday, 5 to 7 pm, maybe even up to 8 pm if required. Since it looks like I'm the only one with enough time to cobble materials together, I'll take it that I'm the only one presenting slides; of course everybody is welcome to come and share his/her ideas and participate in any "show & tell."

BAMF, puede magrequest na ikaw na muna bahala magdecide sa venue? We just need an LCD projector, and I can bring my own notebook and gear. Let's push through even if there are only 5 people attenting, that's good enough just to pilot the materials. After this, maybe we can schedule a more full-blown affair with the inputs we get from this saturday meeting... I'll text you later to coordinate.

Everybody else, kindly review this write-up below if it's ok with you so that we can copy and paste the following invitation if you like to get more people involved (and ask them to register here in this link).. I'll see if I can get my website up to host the workshop online before saturday.

====================

Pilot Guitar Workshop
April 29, 2007
5 to 7 pm
Venue: Either Purple Haze or Mag:Net (please go to the Guitar Secrets Exchange Link for updates on final venue)

Topic:  Fretboard Logic
- Improve your ability to improvise leads or create more dynamic and more melodic harmonies on guitar by learning about the relationships between and among the major scale, the natural minor scale, and the pentatonic scale and their shapes on the fretboard
- Exchange your deepest and darkest guitar secrets with fellow guitarists, share tips and ideas, and get involved and prepare your own topic for workshops in the near future

Pre-requisites:
1. Ability to play the major and minor chords, to strum simple tunes on the guitar, and must have some knowledge of tablature (but just the bare minimum, like what's string 1, 2, 3 etc and the standard display of fretboard on tablature, since most of the slides will show the guitar in reference to tablature, although there's no tab actually used).
2. Gear: at least an acoustic guitar and a pick

Schedule
4:45 pm registration and tuning of guitars
5:00 pm Slideshow Presentation, Live Demonstrations plus guitar exercises
6:00 pm Sharing, Coaching and jam session
6:40 pm Workshop evaluation and Brainstorming by participants (to get ideas as to how to better improve future workshops, what topics to include/exclude down the line, what kind of instructors to invite in the future, what are reasonable budgets to ensure sustainable workshops in the future etc.)
7:00 pm Pack-up gear and end of session

Hosted by BAMF
Main Facilitator for April 29: Cramjammer

Attendance is free but limited... kindly contact BAMF for details

BAMF and the rest of the guys,

I've posted the lessons in the Online Campus website (hosted by fundmetrics) for your review and to see if we have enough to push through this Saturday... to get to the site, please follow the link below:

onlinecampus.fundmetrics.com

and follow the links to the Guitar Workshop, which is found under the General Workshops heading.

(Alternatively, people can go to the link below:

http://www.fundmetrics.com/courses/course/category.php?id=8

and follow the Guitar Workshop 101 link.)

You'll have to register yourself and get an Online Campus ID; after you do that, you can enroll in the Workshop. To get the updated enrollment password, kindly email me at

crammerjammer@gmail.com

I'm not opening this up to everybody just yet, as we are still on a pilot stage and I'd like to limit the exposure for now.  This means I won't be allowing guests in the meantime. Anyway, the Online Campus has a facility so that we can easily schedule repeating events or organize other guitar workshops in the future, which is another reason for us to all register. This should make everyone's work easier.

Let's get this show on the road! I'll be happy to get everybody's feedback.

Kung pilot lang naman, pwede na sa PIMP, either sa studio or sa lounge. Maybe we don't need the projector muna, we can have it as a laptop presentation for the meantime (or as a TV presentation...pwede din me NTSC out ang isang laptop ko).

5 is easy to manage and raise. Pilot lang naman e. Text mo na lang ako at my contact number in my sig.
