Does storing a mic for a long period of time affect their sound?
« on: December 16, 2011, 12:01:06 PM »
Good day, I have 2 microphones AKG D880 and AKG D770 which was purchased about 12 and 10 years ago respectively. These two mics were soldom used, even maybe years that were not used. Now I tested them with two other AKG D770 which I got 10 years ago also(same model as these were a package of 3) which I often use and noticed that the D770's which i often used has a hotter output and a clearer High and Midrange frequency response(the primary reason why I got these mics) as compared to the D880 and the other D770 which i seldom used which gave a weaker output and not that much High and Midrange (sounded more like a Shure SM58).

Now my question, does storing and not using a mic for a prolonged period of time affect it's sound?  If so, can I correct it by using it frequently now?

Thanks!!! I'll wait for your expert experiences and infos.   :-D

baka tumigas, di na flexible yung membrane nya sir. di na makapaglaro cguro mabuti kaya mahina na output at pangit na tunog.

try mo lang sir. alam mo naman mga membrane usually mga plastic, nagiging matigas or brittle in time, kahit rubber nga nawawala flex nya in time.

Thanks.  I will try... sana umayos siya. Gusto ko kasi ang tunog ng D770 at D880.

To store mics, you have to put it together to lots of silica gel to remove possible moisture inside the capsule.  Normally, if stored properly, the mic response will not be affected.  Storing it would mean putting in in a place where the humidity and heat factors are not that great to affect the mic's performance.  Try re-using them to "exercise" them a bit and see if there will be some improvement in their performance.  Also, put some silica gel into their storage boxes.  FWIW

Thanks sir MikeP!!! As I've mentioned, these mics were stored in an SKB mic case.  I am now exercising them by using them. I hope that they will sound like the rest in a couple of days.
