Dude, I think it is really important if a drummer could read and execute the notes. I envy those guys who could do it effectively. I'm glad that most of the members here share the same sentiments.

note reading is important... pero it's not everything... sa pagkaka-alam ko hindi lahat maisusulat sa notes .... maaring nakasulat sya in note form, mabababasa mo, pero hindi mo alam ang feel and ultimately hindi din mo din matutugtog..

recently i've been looking at new orleans and 2nd line drumming... I've seen notes written for the parts pero if you play it how it's written, hindi sya magiging katunog nung tunay na tunog (an example would be the notes written in Tommy igoe's book for new orleans groove -- if you played that straight (even with the accents as written in the notes), it would not sound close to how a new orleans groove is played..

I think ganon din naman sa words eh.. kung nakasulat, mababasa mo ung mga words, pero kung hindi mo masabi ng maayos or hindi tama ung accents mo or ung syllables, may possibility na iba ang maging meaning or hindi mo rin maintindihan...

the reverse is also true... correct me if i'm wrong... pero sa pagkaka-alam ko, may mga chinese dialect / language na kailangan pang isulat ung characters dun sa music video habang kinakanta (parang sub titles) kasi kapag hindi na-ayos ung accent (which is nawawala kapag nilalagyan na ng melodies ang lyrics), iba ang nagiging meaning nung words or may possibility na hindi maintindihan nung nakikinig...

so, depende siguro sa goal... kung gusto mo lang basta basta makatugtog, ok siguro kahit na hindi ka marunong magbasa (in the same way na may mga taong makakapagsalita at makikipagusap sayo pero maaring hindi sya marunong magbasa - pero magkakaintidihan kayo)... pero kung gusto mo pa siguro na mas marami kang ma-explore, mas dumami ang resources mo and other things, or gusto mong talagang maging professional musician, maganda siguro na matuto magbasa ng notes... pero as always, parating may exception ;-)

ako when I want to do a pattern or groove that I picture in my head and cannot put it into action because of poor coordination I write it down and slowly practice it.

it would also be easier mag-transcribe ng song...and even create your own groove because of note reading.

Hey guys and ladies

But for the purpose of studying books on your own it helps lalo na kung ikaw ay isang visual person like me.

Isa sa nakakatulong sa akin ay to look at the notation as a puzzle ex. the 8th notes would be the frame of the puzzle. I'll mark the O for the bass and x for the snare:
              1n  2n  3n  4n
                _   _   _    _
 Hi hat      l  l  l  l  l  l  l  l
 snare           x         x x
 bass       o         oo

As you can see lining up the bass on beat 1 and 3 n. While the snare comes in on beat 2 and 4 n. It also helps if your counting loud at first.

Just remember this counting:

Quarter note: 1     2     3    4  Takes one full beat w/c includes yung up beat.

8th notes :  1  n  2  n  3  n  4  n (number ex. 1 is the down beat/ n's are the up beat)

16th notes: 1end2end3end4end (just doublin the down and up beat)

One 16th + two 8th notes: 1-nd 2-nd 3-nd 4-nd

two 8th + one 16th: 1en- 2en- 3en- 4en-

dotted 8th + one 16th: 1-- d  2--d  3--d  4--d

16th + 8th + 16th: 1e-d 2e-d 3e-d 4e-d
So the key to note reading are:

1. Know how to count the notes.

2. Line-up each drum parts to the beats. Does it go on the down beat or up beat.

3. Study the proper motion...this is true w/ latin grooves when you move hands to the toms.

One 16th + two 8th notes: 1-nd 2-nd 3-nd 4-nd

two 8th + one 16th: 1en- 2en- 3en- 4en-

Sir,

Two 16th + one 8th yung 1en- 2en- 3en- 4en-

otherwise lalabas na kulang tayo ng isang 16th note to make up for 1 quarter for every beat?

its best if you know how to read... and not just read... sight read...
my teacher in drums said that its a good thing to know how to use your ears when playing any type on instrument but most of the time especially when time passes...
we tend to forget what we heard...

when you know how to read and write music... your drum solos can be played with just reading

its just like making a poem... you will forget that thru time... but when you have written down and you know how to read it... that piece becomes timeless...

note reading will help you understand how rhythym works and how music is arranged hence
the more you know about it the more you can do stuff to it.
Vinnie Coliuata (if ever tama spelling ko), Dave weckl, Virgil DOnati and ll these techy drummers, kaya nila napapalalim palo
dahil alam nila bituka nito hehe.

Tsaka it will help you cover all the basics really well.

Buddy Rich doesn't read music or even drum notes but he was
totally gifted. Kahit tayo may gift din kaso makapal pagkabalot nung gift natin kailang bagbagin lahat
nung balot bago mo makuha and yet we'll get there.

Big essential din ang back ground sa note reading in arranging songs sa computer. like fruityloops and other music composing softwares. pag illiterate ka sa notes well lahat ng softwares na pang gawa ng kanta e useless kung di marunong magbasa ng nota. hehehe just wana share

Hindi po siya tempo

Example: You play 8th notes in 100 bpm. 100 bpm is the tempo
You play 8 BEATS in a Measure. Playing in quarter note means you play 4 BEATS per measure. 16th notes = 16 beats/measure

Quarter notes:
1 2 3 4
8th notes:
1 + 2 + 3 + 4 +
16th notes:
1 e + a 2 e + a 3 e + a 4 e + a

hehe tama po ba?

yup agree dun sa unang part.

you play 8th notes in 100bpm, 100 bpm is the tempo.

yung beats, it depends on the time signature.. for example 4/4
ibig sabihin 4 beats in a measure, 1 quarter note for every beat. eto yung nagbibilang ka ng 1 2 3 4... 1 2 3 4

familiarize yourself with notes din muna. umpisahan mo sa whole note

whole note = 2 half notes
half note = 2 quarter notes
quarter note = 2 x 8th notes
8th note = 2 x 16th notes
16th note = 2 32nd notes

quick question pala!
pag odd time ba:
lets say 6/8

6 = number of beats na tutugtugin ko

8 = paano ko siya bibilangin

tama ba?

The 8 on 6/8 means that the counting is based on eighth notes.

If the denominator is 4, it means the counting will be based on quarter notes.  If it's 2, it's half notes.  And so forth...

nyek, no apology needed pare. :-)

basta tandaan mo yung number sa taas is the number of beats in a measure so kung 6, bilangin mo ng 1 2 3 4 5 6 kung gusto mo, pero not necessarily may pinapalo ka.

o gusto mo bilangin ng 1 n 2 n 3 n ikaw bahala, kung san mo mas madali bilangin

Pasali ha... My kid "kendan" who is I think the youngest member of Philmusic "pinoy drums" recently had his recital sa drums. The solo he had was not that long, and for those of us who can play drums but can't read notes would say na simple with a bit of accent lang as fills. But the thing is I tried to read his piece and I got a bit confused.

Nakakatawa pa he was teaching me how to read the notes.  :-D
