Seriously, don't get discouraged if you don't get a shot right the first time. Just take TONS of pictures and pick the best out of them. :-D

I agree. Go to youtube. It would help. 18-55 is a good walk around lens na. At this point you don't need fast lenses muna. Get a ground muna sa basic bro later na ung shopping.

It can cover the 50mm range with that lens YES but that is a zoom lens. Nothing wrong with a zoom lens but with the 50mm 1.4 lens which is a prime lens (non-zoomable lenses) you zoom with your feet and with the wide aperture of 1.4 you can have fun with BOKEH :-D

Pasali nalang din sa bokeh shots! hahaha! This is just a 50mm f1.8 though pero stop down at 2.8 kasi di masyado sharp at wide open

so with those type of lens you can get really nice round bokehs?

Post by: pallas on December 15, 2009, 10:17:02 AM
Yeah bro, you can start with the 50mm 1.4s and the 1.8s.

You can also try your lens widest open aperture.
-get your favorite pedal or whatever you want to picture.
-shoot it with some lights behing it with you a bit more closer to the subject and the lights behind the subject a bit further away.

You should get some bokeh going on.

I'm getting a 50mm this week so I can use it for parties this weekend.
In the meantime I have my kit lens with me 18-55mm .. so I took this shot .

nice pic bro. the 18-55mm lens is really a very versatile lens. it is wide enough for landscape shots and has a good zoom range. just keep shooting. try places with different lighting conditions so you'll get to feel how iso, aperture and shutter speed works.

and get a good sturdy tripod. :-D

thank you so much....

really appreciate your suggestion. Can you tell me why do you prefer to get the flash first ?

BTW... after I buy the 50mm 1.8 II lens, I am thinking of getting the Grip and 2 batteries (cool thin , it accepts AA batts too) ...you think thats a good idea? I hate it when I ran out of batteries in the middle of shooting.

Im no pro ah, but i think mas ma maximize mo yung versatility ng kit lens mo.. :)

and have you consider the scenario na kailangan mo switch back to your kit lens? medyo ka hassle din, well for me.. :)

but a 50mm lens is really nice din naman.. :)

I agree din. External flash is really handy when shooting low light condition bro. It is more powerful and  is capable of a wider coverage than the built-in flash. You can also tilt and swivel the head which will allow you more lighting option.

the flash I am eyeing is a bit steep  $ 500 that is like a nice botik pedal already....hahahaha kidding aside.
Right now, I am just buying stuff that I can afford like that lens and accessories.... as of now, I only do shoot outside during daytime a lot (when I do my daily walk)...when I get bored and tired of shooting at that location... and budget permits... I would get that flash.

...really appreciate all your input guys. This hobby is F U N.

ha ha ...just got me the nikon sb 900 and that was worth an ETHOS man. i know how you feel but check out strobist.com and see how people use their flash with a regular DSLR.

It makes a lot of sense.

Its all about light and how to harness, add and manipulate it.

Newbie in strobie....here is my take on bounce flash.

Meaning the flash head was swiveled towards a wall and the light was bounced on the subject.

what does those hoods do ?
It prevents glare to your lens which are coming from the sides. It also acts as a protection on your front element or filter.

Sir phil, honest comment ah, the shot taken with ur 50mm looks soft in focus..

whats ur setting? :)
honesty is the best policy... its okay.  :-)

I don't do manual focus because I am not that good yet.  I usually have it a Aperture Priority Mode ....
settings...ISO 100, F/1.8, 1/3200 sec

the pic looks sharper here sa Flckr though

I did get a couple of shots that are sharper ...like this

You can still ask the camera/chipped lens to focus for you even when your in manual mode unless you are using a manual focus lens.

what do you mean?

'coz when I turn off the lens auto focus, even when I just turn the focus ring manually, I see my af point (small box that I chose for focusing) light up and beep. So really the camera is still helping me and telling me it is in focus.

Is that what you mean?

You can still use the focus indicator as a guide when focusing manually, other than than that you can fire a burst of shots and hopefully one is in focus.

tripod is coming already ... I got a Slik Pro 700DX....didn't get the Manfrotto... we will see how this Slik performs...if it sucks...then I can return it and add some money and get a Manfrotto. The grad filter can wait...will see whats gonna happen if I do need it. I only bought UV protectors on all of my lens...Teffens and a couple of Zeikos.
