One cymbal setup suggestions
« on: July 12, 2015, 11:14:22 AM »
Hi!

Any suggestions for a one cymbal setup, aside from the hats of course?

Planning to get new hats and crash that is rideable or ride that is crashable. I'm still on my planet z's, which I got as part of the pearl target package in jb atc a few years back. Current additions are Tama hi hat stands, speed cobra double pedals, and Joey jordison snare, if that helps as to my preferences.

Thanks!

18 / 19" na crash or crash ride would work well. Kung normal ride lang baka hindi crashable unless med/thin o lighter. Ok din 20" K custom dark. Very versatile, and crashable kahit 20". Kung kaya ng budget kahit anong k hats, 14" versatile. Ok din Istanbul mehmet sultan or traditional series kung mababa budget.

Cool! Thanks! Only heard positive reviews bout the K customs. Re the Istanbul, I read that the hand hammered stuff must be handpicked cause of inconsistencies, unlike the cast ones na consistent Yun tunog? Tama po ba?

Yes, every cymbal will sound different becuase it is hand-hammered, not just Istanbul but other brands with hand hammered models, sa zildjian mostly mga vintage. But i read somewhere na yung bagong Kerope line ay hybrid, pre-machine hammered tapos tatapusin ng hand hammering. So you need to choose, however, di naman sila inconsistent.  But they're all machine cast and kung may lathing machined din yun.

And yes crashable ang sweet ride. Cool setup if ever, share naman kung ano mangyari...

I really love my Istanbul Mehmet Sultan Ride, 20". Very nice stick sound, controlled wash, nice crash sound, and a killer bell. If I only had one non-hi hat cymbal to play, it's gonna be that ride. It can play hard rock to jazz and that's why I'm very happy with it. If you like it less earthy, the Traditional series version would work well. If it's a rideable crash, I'd probably go with an 18" Stagg DH crash, or maybe a Sabian AAX Omni (but I only ever heard recordings of it, but it sounds good to me).

For hats, Zildjian 13" K/Z if you can find one. alam ko out of production na to, so you have to hunt for it. but it's a very personal choice (Carter beauford fan here) so don't take my word for it. Other than that, I'd be good with Zildjian 14" A New Beats.

Tagal na nung last post. Pero update ko lang. Hehehe...

Got paiste alpha medium hats! Tried out the alpha rock hats na brilliant, rude (which were loud! Masakit na sa tenga!), istanbul trad/ samatya/ radiant, avedis new beats/ rock hats. But i liked the alpha mediums the most. Its not so bright but i liked the stick definition. It meshes well with the jordison snare.

Ngayon hanap naman ng crash na puede ride, or vice versa. Considering the rude vs power crash.... Sweet ride & groove ride mga options din. Mukhang i prefer to ride a crash rather than crashing the ride.  Still lookin....

Hahaha! Isa lang talaga!

But seriously, i'm considerin dreendroids power crash. Either that or the 2002 wild crash at audiophile. The wild crashlooks like it has a big bell. Might be good for crash riding? Youtub sucka for cymbals. Parang lahat maganda. And they end up sounding too similar. Di ko marinig yun nuances. Plus i still need to hit the cymbals.

thanks for the tips sir! pero wala pong pambili ng k. i would if i could. hahaha!

got my "one cymbal" kanina. i was pleasantly surprised by the "budget" meinl classics custom. b10 yata siya. got the 19" dark crash! it has a passsable crash ride tone for me, to my noob ears at least. major step up from my planet z crash ride.

found this youtube demo vid for it:

on the plus side, it looks great with my jordison snare!

Wanted a sweet ride before but thanks for the heads up. Next time 19 crash na k custom hybrid if funds allow. Got the19" meinl dark crash to tide me over til my ears can distinguish the diff. Ngayon kasi everythin sounds better tjan my planet z crash ride. Hahaha!
