Title: Behringer Hellbabe- short review and free modification instructions
Post by: BAMF on April 14, 2007, 10:55:36 PM
Last week, radiostationexp brought over his Behringer Hellbabe to see if anything can be done to improve it. The Hellbabe is generally regarded in the guitar community as an entry-level piece of equipment, if not a POS. Hardly any pro or serious musician would use it. IMHO. Anyway...

This golden opportunity for me to study it. So we opened it, tweaked around a bit. Hmmm...dig this..all possible mods for traditional wahs are built in. Variable sweep control, Q-control, there's a fine tune knob for i-dont-know-what-yet, and looky looky...a built-in booster ! Yeah. Has a spring too so it pushes back when you release. This is gonna put wah modders out of business. Anyway I inquired what the complaint was. And radiostationexp's complaint(which seems to be the general observation): bitin ang sweep.

Studied it further. Hmmm...surface mount, PCB-mounted controls...so Behringer. Optical. Hmmm...no pot to wear out. Akin, or perhaps more apt, ripped from the Morley Bad Horsie design. Looked at the boards. Hmmm...TL082 op amp chips. Dual JFET-input op-amps (surface mount albeit). Not bad at all. Audio grade, low-noise chips and not the bipolar-input POS chips found on stock DS1's and TS9's.

Anyway, after tinkering, I seem to have disabled its ability to bypass. So ariff left the unit with me, but graciously mined the internet for data on it and he found a couple of ways to improve it.

Just tonight, I thought I'd take it up again. So using the data ariff sent me, I proceeded to fix the trouble I caused (no bypass) by lowering the LED and LDR of the large notch on the plastic light blocker. It worked...fixed the problem. Next, with a hobby knife, I proceeded to cut out the small notch which actually controls the sweep of the wah. First I cut it down towards the LED/LDR so the sweep would start early in the rocking action. Preliminary tests were encouraging. Sounded much better, and the sweep was wider. Then as a coup d' grace, I started to cut upwards, thus enlarging the triangle. When you do this, make sure to *somehow* maintain the slope of the triangle, or at least keep close to it. Too much cut and you will lose the sweep. With that final cut done, we tried it again (me, psychic sushi and chito_eoi).  Wow ! There's the rub ! Nice, wide sweep with a very conspicous "me-owww". That's it, no further mods required.

With this simple mod, surely, the Behringer Hellbabe will make a worthy addition to your pedalboard. Yep. Even for professional use.

I love cheap stuff. :D

so sir, hellbabe is better than boston metal wah?
Title: Re: Behringer Hellbabe- short review and free modification instructions
Post by: BAMF on April 14, 2007, 11:15:52 PM
IMHO-qualified. From a features and durability point of view (and I mean durability in use, and not durability as a bludgeon), yeah I'd say it is much more superior to the Boston metal wah. As for the sound...well...the Behringer was very good. Psychic_sushi said it sounded better than his DOD FX17 wah. And well...I can only trust his ears :D

Mr. BAMF, is it possible to post a step-by-step series of pics? kahit hindi ganun ka detailed. Para accurate yung pag cut?

Just a suggestion.

Thanks for sharing the knowledge.

I like to regard what BAMF does as electronic alchemy. Turning lead into gold

After first playing that hellbabe, the wah travel (i tweaked and tweaked all that can be tweaked, mini knobs and what not), i felt the wah was anemic, lacking in sweep range. Thank heavens fafa BAMF took the scalpel to the section that regulates the LED output.

After his tweak... OOOOMPHH!!!

Damn, it honestly sounded like a Bad Horsie, PLUS, more variable control coz of the Q filter, sweep range and other stuff. I want one!

Ok, we all know that wahs based on LED and capacitance are clean, and don't have the "dirt" that potentiometer based wahs, right?!

BAMF!!! Time to scalarize the mofo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This wah will make the others sweat

O eto mga ser, just in case you want to save the trip to PIMP.

Eto na yung after. I reckon this mod will also apply to the Morley Bad Horsie from which the optical system seems to be ripped from.

Just picked up my hellbabe from PIMP a few hours ago. After giving it a try I immediately noticed that the sweep range improved IMMENSELY! The mod really makes a difference!  :-D

Looks like the people at Behringer didn't really give enough serious thought into the design of this wah. Dami ngang bells and whistles (tweakable knobs) but the basic function (to WAAAHH, gedemit!) wasn't given due attention!

Pahabain nyo lang pababa at pataas, following the same slope ng original hole. :D

BAMF, kaya bang alisin yung spring ang make it work just like a crybaby? I have a spare dpdt switch here kasi and I've been wondering kung pwedeng gawing stomp based yung switching system ng hellbabe so I can just leave it in one position and act like a tone control. :D

Yes the bypass control LDR can be bypassed...and yes the spring can be removed. I've never done it before tho although I do know how it's done. Wanna offer a Hellbabe for an experiment ?

eto ung pix. (http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a241/brutusjam2/DSC00480.jpg)

Uki ! The slot to the left is the one that controls the bypass/effect. The LDR governing this can be replaced by an SPST latching switch. Hindi nga lang true bypass. Anyway, the slit on the right is the one that controls the sweep. In the original Hellbabe and Bad Horsie, this slit is very small. Such so that the sweep only begins in mid-rock position. The picture here shows the lengthened sweep slit, which starts just above the LED/LDR pair so that the wah action begins early in the rocking action.

I've had mine for almost a year now and it's still working fine. Infinitely better than the Daphon wah I had before it. That was a worthless piece of junk!

Pahabain nyo lang pababa at pataas, following the same slope ng original hole. :D

Pano kung maipasok sa maling butas?  Di ba masakit?    :-D

ung wah sweep is that the tone change from when the wah is all the way back and then rocked all the way front?

anyway if it is...kaya nyo ba sir bamf na improve ung gcb95 "sweep" medyo too fast/abrupt kasi ung tone change pag ginagamit.

BAMF,

You forgot to comment and analyze the most important part and heart and soul of a WAH.  The inductor...

So until you prove that the inductor in the Hellbabe rivals, inductors voiced by RMC, Orion and Area 51 -- suspend your accolades.

ooopss.

I made a mistake...  This thing does not seem to have an inductor.  Crap.

So, you are right.  It might be the greatest value for money wah without an inductor with all the mods and flexible options.

For real nice and warm sounding wahs, please look elsewhere.

An organicore scalarizer can be inserted in the Hellbabe signal path to make it sound warmer. :D . Sure worked on a CS3 :D

Oo naman no argument there. Between a wah with no inductor and a wah na meron, iba talaga ang meron.

I'll report back after the experiment :D . I put an organicore scalarizer on my POS Behringer compressor and whoah. Then on a CS3. Ganda. Basically on anything electronic that you want to warm up.

I did it on my Behringer CS100 compressor sustainer. I'm not sure...perhaps I was uncreative at the time, but the way I did it was to lift the output jack and insert it there. It works a a proof of concept, but in actual use, it's not advisable. Because that will mean that your signal, whether bypassed or not, will pass through the scalarizer and you will have a permanent scalarizer in your signal path.

The righter way to do it is to find an insertion point that's inside the effects circuitry that will not be in the path of the bypass route. That way, when you bypass the effect, even the scalarizer is bypassed.

A little OT sir bamf, i have a morley pvw(the old one) which is one weak as sh-t wah, especially if put first in the signal chain. when put after distortion, the sweep is much better but it sucks half of my tone away.

would you recommend that i do the same mod you did with the rocker pedal "windows"?

the morley's "windows" look like this-

 __________
|                    |
|                    |
|                    |
--------   -------
         |  |
         |  |
          --

do you think i should do like you did with the hellbabe?
if i understand correctly you cut out the groove in the middle and
turned the "window" into an inverse triangle, right?

or would you know of a mod for this?

I think we've done one before. I recall Anton giving me the info on how to mod morley's. It involves covering up, rather than cutting. You take some duct tape and make a "V". But it shouldnt matter much. Unless you're irritated about the abrupt sweep. Let me check if I can find the file. If I'm not mistaken, Morley themselves posted the mod.

I have a palliative for the tone suck. Inasmuch as I'd want to call it a "cure", I have to check how it fares against a true bypass or if the wah were run through a looper. It's very simple and just involves running a 6pF capacitor from the input jack to the output jack.

Yesterday, there was a forumite who was selling his modded hellbabe in the classifieds section. I asked him who modded his hellbabe.

As he replied via PM, he said that he did it himself following some instructions from other website and he also recommended Sir BAMF's instructional thread here.

Ever since I had my Hellbabe, I've always been planning to bring it to Sir BAMF for some modifications. I just dont have time due to my very busy schedule at work. So I mmediately review this thread to learn more about the modded hellbabe.

At first, the procedure seems very easy. But for a person who doesnt have talent with electronics like me  :-D, maybe its too risky....  :-D

One of our trusted forumite here encouraged me to do it my self. So this morning, I gave it a try.

I devirginized my hellbabe using a cutter...

Waaaahhhllllaaaahhhh!!!!

The operation was very successful. My hellbabe finally got longer sweep.

OMG!!! The baby is now a lady!!!!

I still plan to bring this to Sir BAMF for him to add some sweeter sound. Maybe if he could put some scalarizer, if possible.

Thank you my dear forumites for creating this great thread and sharing your pointers about modding the hellbabe!!!

Most specially thank you to our Genius Forumite here, Sir BAMF!!!!

It has happened before that the scalarizer reduces hum and even makes the signal louder and stronger. I won't guarantee that it will happen each and every time though. I can PM you the names of certain forumers on whose guitars it has happened though.

the result of divirginizing your hellbabe will have a quicker engage. therefore, if you step into it and has a quicker engage, you'll feel the longer sweep. that's why, we tend to cut the infrared hole.

if you did it correctly, you'll appreciate the huge difference...

good lack to your diy modification!!!

Pano ba setup nyo?
