If you happen to visit:
Shanghai:
Jingling Road a street lined with different shops. Some are loaded with nice goodies..some with crappy stuff..try to haggle a bit especially at small shops as usually they pad the prices especially if your a foreigner. You can find Ishibashi Shanghai Branch Here.
Beijing:
Xinjiekou and Gu Lou Da jie (near one famous tourist spot of the city "Drum Tower": Xin Jie kou is similar to Jingling road..Guloudajie has more upscale shops. One shop along gulou dajie that has really funky stuff is Seven Days Music...check them out..
Tianjin:
Ba wei Lu: Its near the new music college..its a nice street with lots of shops..places to check out are "MOEB" and "Hao Jita".. these two shops have the best prices and carry the good stuff..
Migong is a shop in the "ancient culture street" gǔwénhuàjiē area..its an awesome shop as it carries top boutique gear! a bit pricey though..the owners are a funky looking young couple who smokes all day.

vintage at its finest
-
pero seriously guys, parang the best nadin yung i google yung mga local guitar and gear forums ng country ng pupuntahan ninyo..hahaha para sa day of your travel or vacation..organize nalang kayo ng meet up..baka itour pa kayo ng seller if ever..hahaha
-
no bro, hanap ka ng mga retired musicians mga dating byahero lalo na sa parteng pampangga :)

uy!!! sweeeet tip!! may nakita nga ako long ako na parang vintage jaguar sa sulit..60's..parang bandang pampangga or bandang olonggapo...
this is interesting...sarap i-trace mga to..
by the way speaking of biyaheros of old...did you know:
theres this really famous shanghai bigband group during the 40's-50's here who played in the once very famous Peace hotel here..
and one old trumpeteer or sax guy yata..sabi niya yung nagturo at naginfluence sa kanya mag play ng JAZZ.....pinoy! na biyahero.. siguro during the american occupation..natuto si pinoy jazz man..tapos bumiyahe sa far east...
actually even now..hindi padin nagbabago...
most of the showbands sa mga bars and clubs, hotels.. here are mostly pinoys...I think a lot of forumers here have played their rounds here in china..
and when chinese folk talk about pinoys..."musikero" agad yung naiisip nila..astig nga eh.

sa States, Guitar Center is really cool... I want to go to the smaller "gear stores" there though..

I don't have pictures pero eto na yung mga napuntahan ko:
1. Hong Kong - Tsang Fook Piano Co. sa may ibaba ng Eaton Hotel sa Nathan Road. Di ako nakapunta sa Tom Lee noon kasi wala pa akong alam sa gear during that time. hehe :-D
2. Singapore
a. Bras Basah Complex - 2 or 3 yung napuntahan ko doon na music stores. Yung biggest ay yung Swee Lee
b. Peninsula Excelsior - sa ground floor and basement maraming stores.
4. England
a. Liverpool - Curly Music. Malapit lang sa Liverpool Lime Street station kaya madali ko nahanap nung nag day tour ako doon
b. Burton-on Trent - Pete Oakley Music
Pangarap ko mapuntahan ang Guitar Center sa LA at yung Anderton's sa England.
:-D

Actually, they called a cab for me after ko bayaran yung guitar na binili ko. While waiting for the cab, doon ko lang naisip na, "Makapag-piktyur-piktyur nga!!!"

Actually, prices in Shanghai ishibashi are a bit expensive..but the best thing is they have really nice stocks..so window shopping is a joy..my patronage fizzled out when I bought a warwick guitar stand double the price sa small local stores...
they had a huge shop before..but they shrinked just recently.. they have one pre owned fender pawnshop '51 that Im waiting for them to put on sale. (if that ever happens)

JinLing Lu: Shanghai's One-Stop Music Shop
By Dennis Ming Nichols
in Music, movies and performance
JinLing Lu. Music street. This is the street where you go if you want to buy musical instruments or music-related gear. Being that I am an extremely-amateur musician, this is one of the first places in Shanghai that made me feel at home. My first visit there lit up my face and emptied my wallet. I went back recently to recount that first bank-account draining day and also to pick up some other supplies.
On the list was a microphone stand, guitar picks, a pop screen, acoustic guitar strings, soft cymbal mallets, and an instrument cable. Here's how it went down.
I start at the corner of JinLing and Xizang (Tibet) road and start walking east. Right now, the music shops are few, but they get more concentrated the closer you walk to the Bund. My first stop is this little shop that sells pianos, percussion and wind instruments where I find some soft mallets for 120RMB. Normally, I'd shop around a bit more before spending that much, but these were pretty high quality and I had too much to do that day. I talk them down to 100RMB and I'm out the door. soft cymbal mallets
I wander into a random guitar shop just for fun. It smells new and I never got the name of the place. I test out this popular ZOOM bass multi-effects pedal for about 10 minutes. I'd love to buy it, but ShanghaiExpat only pays me in vouchers to Bricco Pizza, so I reluctantly put it away. Microphone stands were a bit expensive there, but I did find some decent cables for 20RMB each. I lose these all the time, so price tops quality. instrument cable
Next stop is my favorite store, The Guitar and Bass Pro Shop. Two years ago I bought my used ARIA bass there for 2500RMB. Just for giggles I bang on the Djembes (gotta get me one of those!) and strum an acoustic guitar for a while. To my embarrassment, I was interrupting a guitar lesson between one of the shopkeeps and a kid. My bad! I stroll over to the strings counter and get some decent strings for 40RMB. The store owner throws in some pics for free! acoustic guitar strings, guitar picks
Next place is Blue Hand, a more corporate-looking store with lots of keyboards, electronic drums and recording equipment. I still need to pick up a mic stand and a pop screen, but the cheapest ones I can find are 100RMB and 200RMB respectively. After haggling with the price for a few minutes, I decided it's best to get these items on TaoBao (and I did for 60RMB and 99RMB, respectively).
Before I leave JinLing, I have to stop at a few shops that sell traditional Chinese instruments. One shop in particular had some beautiful Erhus with python-skin bodies from 350RMB and up. Unfortunately, I have no judge of quality and I produced a few sickening faces while proving I had no idea to play it. As always, I messed around with a guzheng and various percussion instruments. I actually might come back to get some Chinese-opera drums if they ever decide to accept vouchers from Bricco Pizza!

I'll post some of my findings here - I've just been to Japan - tokyo / kansai area and went to several ishibashis. But couldn't really find anything new, interesting and cheap. Did end up buying a used vox delaylab for the equivalent of P2,5k
I had a pleasant surprise last year in Seoul. Insadong area. A placed called Music Mall. It's literally one good-sized mall full of musical instruments. I came in with an eye for keyboards, so I posted this last year in the Keyboards forum :

one of my favorite places - Beale street in Memphis. Gibson has a retail outlet, next to the FedEx Center (home of the Memphis Grizzlies)
http://www.gibson.com/en-us/Locations/RetailCenters/Memphis/
Beale St is also a great place to hang out - BB King has a bar, and he plays every weekend

Ochanomizu - I stumbled on this after walking a few blocks from the Akihabara section. Lots of shops, lots of guitars and effects, but I couldn't really convince myself to get anything as I could just go cheap and go 2nd hand. However, one store had a good collection of Danelectros - which I haven't found anywhere else in the world (though quite expensive). It was only when I reviewed the photo did I discover a "cheap" Hodad (the one with the double lipstick pickup) - approx. 9k pesos. But it's a biatch to carry-on

Darius, youre the guy who played in narcissus, shanghai early 2000 right?
-
ill probably go to japan next and check out the japanese brands or one's i cant find locally here, but i've been to a couple of nice stores locally,
guitar center is the walmart of stores here, well essentially you try it there and buy from MF, AMS , Zzounds or Music123/Sameday music etc
http://davesguitar.com/ - Suhrs, Andersons and Collings
http://www.distinctiveguitar.com/ - suhrs, knaggs, lsl, boutique strats one prs's
http://www.creamcitymusic.com/ - fenders, probably one of the stores that carry the greg koch model, greg is usually around interstate music sometimes teaching
Marc's guitars - Suhr, Nik huber (probably out of biz),
there's alot of small stores that sells used stuff gibsons, deans , i encourage some to visit pawnshops here as you can get some nice stuff for under 1500
but if you cant find gustavssons here go to IL (43min drive) and your best bet is Maken Music and shops in the IL area

http://davesguitar.com/ - Suhrs, Andersons and Collings
http://www.distinctiveguitar.com/ - suhrs, knaggs, lsl, boutique strats one prs's
http://www.creamcitymusic.com/ - fenders, probably one of the stores that carry the greg koch model, greg is usually around interstate music sometimes teaching
Thanks for these. I've had so-so experience with Guitar Center, though there's a good one near St Louis, MO
In NYC, Manny's Music and Sam Ash are neighbors just a few streets off Times Square. I got a Steinberger from Sam Ash last March.
Upstate NY, there's Alto Music, with several branches. Similar to Guitar Center.
Personally, I found the Seoul Music Mall to be the best, for my needs. You can find a nice mix of brand new and used; and the vendors are quite knowledgeable. I got a MIDI organ module and a drum module, and they were kind enough to adjust the power supplies to my voltage needs. Oh and I bought a kazoo as well.

distinctive guitar to me has been a great experience having tried these pieces from
Roger Giffin Guitars
Michael Tuttle Guitars
Knaggs Guitars
Rocketfire Guitars
John Greven Guitars
Melancon Guitars
Scott Walker Guitars
Fibenare Guitars
K-Line Guitars
its a nice to have actually tried those to get an idea what you're paying for.
I'd like to add J.Hale Guitars - eastman guitars or get your own custom eastman thru him

I went to some music stores near my language school in Shinjuku, somewhere in Tokyo. It was a pretty fun trip. :-)

Sa mga magpupunta ng Dubai, go to fish roundabout sa may Deira, maraming mga music stores dun, mga authorized dealers ng epiphone, Gibson, fender, ibanez, Roland, korg at marami pang iba. Meron din sa may jumeirah lake towers, yung musician supply Dubai and musician warehouse Dubai...For washburns and tokais, go to the shop across the Deira City Centre.
Since tax free sa Dubai, mura mga gears plus may mga pinoy na sales persons kaya madaling makipagdeal.

Just got back from Japan last week. While I would normally go to Shinjuku or Ochanomizu to window shop for gear, I discovered that Ikebukuro also has its share of big guitar shops namely:
1. Ishibashi - one of the biggest Ishibashis I've been too
2. Ikebe-Gakki
3. Brown by Ikebe-Gakki - a separate store that specifically caters to the Acoustic enthusiasts
4. Key Music
5. G-Club - Nice used section at the basement with mid to high-end instruments and amps.
Addendum:
Except for G-Club, all of these stores are easy to find and a mere walking distance from the train station.

Question po - bibili po kasi ako ng guitar sa singapore. Pag uwi ko po ba may babayaran akong tax or any other fees?

Gear and other personal effects purchased abroad are taxable by law. Despite that, a lot of people here, including myself, have been lucky enough not to have been charged. Swertihan talaga so don't be surprised if you were unlucky enough to come across a customs officer that would ask you to pay duties. If ever, just hope na ma prinsipyo yung officer and hindi part ng kurakot. Good luck and have a safe gear hunting trip! :)

Oh guys!
Any good stores to visit in Macao? I only found a Tom Lee online and another nondescript store, so I'm wondering if there are places that may be under the radar.
Thanks in advance!

Small pieces of gear - just carry in your bags nonchalantly.
Guitar with case - move like a rockstar, look straight ahead, don't talk but smile while handing over your customs "nothing to declare" form.
-
Rockbottom music store in croydon united kingdom, they sell preloved guitars
Like fender, ibanez, gibson les pauls and they even let pay for installment basis..
-
Bentley Music in Damansara, Malaysia
http://www.bentleymusic.com

Hey Jojo, thanks for sharing the info!
Going to Japan early next year and this will come in handy. by the way, where would you suggest to go and check out 2nd hand or brand new Fenders?

japan ulit, since namention na ochanomizu at ishibashi...
hanapin nyo rin hardoff
http://tokyocheapo.com/shopping-2/hard-off-affordable-electronics-instruments-and-recycled-junk/

Yo, Emil! Musta? :)
Knet is right, Ishibashi carries a lot of Jap and US Fenders. While most stores would have Jap Fenders, not all would have US made ones. The one place to go to where they have the most pre-loved Fenders would be at G-Club based on my last visit. The second hand stuff is located at the basement if you're going to the branch near the Ikebukuro station.

Didn't know about hardoff. Thanks for the info!
Most stores have "junk" guitars/basses for sale but pwede ng iuwi dito, have a guitar tech "fix" it and resell for lower the going rate here and tutubo ka pa! :-D Yun lang nga, yung mga junk guitars are not your Fender, PRS or Gibson branded guitars. usually mga Tokai, SBMM, Aria, Jackson and LTDs were a few that I saw.

Hi guys, just in case magawi kayo sa Nuremberg, Germany, try and visit Musik Klier. They have a good range of Fender and Ibanez guitars. Price-wise, they're more expensive. If you want to tryout some effects the place is quite conducive. They have separate rooms for Boss pedals/MultiFx and non Boss (Line 6, EHX, Zoom, etc...)

If you lookin for second hand la pre but if new the usual Tom Lee stores. Parsons in Kornhill station has a sale going on now.
Beat MMM and Guitar Sofa are your other options.

Also Tsang Fook in Eaton Hotel Nathan road is worth a visit.

This is a semi-detailed documentation of my visit in Feb 2016.
First thing off, as many would say if you're visiting Japan with the intent
of acquiring a guitar/bass or other musical instrument related items, Ochanomizu in Tokyo would be the place to visit.
But what if you're not going to Tokyo? What if Osaka was your destination?
NOTE: REMEMBER TO PRESENT YOUR PASSPORT TO GET TAX-FREE PRICING.
GUITAR SHOPPING IN OSAKA, JAPAN
Here's my semi-detailed guide to Osaka guitar hunting.
I learned that there are at least 3 areas in Osaka that you can visit
that has a small concentration of Musical instrument stores.
I. UMEDA
If you find yourself in the Northern area of the city, you can check out the shops in the Umeda area (business district), there you will find the Umeda branches of Miki Gakki and Ishibashi and one other small mom & pop shop.
unfortunately I didn't have enough time to visit Umeda so all I know is that there are the above mentioned stores.
But if you're in the central or southern part of the city, you'll find 5 stores to visit.
II. SHINSAIBASHI - (Nagahori Dori side, northern end of Shinsaibashi)
if you're in a rush and you're in Shinsaibashi shopping with your family/group, this would be the perfect place to visit.
This one store along Shinsaibashi-suji is called Miki Gakki (Shinsaibashi branch).
this place is fairly easy to spot, it's beside UNIQLO and H&M at the northern entry point of Shinsaibashi which is along Nagahori Dori ave.
from what I can remember, they carry the following: Fender, Gibson, Greco, FGN, Moon, Aria. also check out their store exclusive
strap brand called "Selfish". you can ask them to mix and match different colored leather straps to your liking.
III. AMERICA-MURA (a.k.a. American Village)
If you have a lot of time on your hands, you MUST visit the place called America-Mura (American Village).
It's just West of Shinsaibashi (you'll need to cross Mido-suji ave.) There you will find 4 stores
all within a stone's throw away from each other.
AMERICA-MURA MUSICAL INSTRUMENT STORE GUIDE:
a. Ishibashi - the ever famous Musical instrument chain in Japan
(http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e270/shodawmoon/20160228_143816_zpstqp0gjt7.jpg)
GROUND FLOOR - everything and anything a guitarist may need, from entry level to high end electric guitars and basses
, strings, common and boutique pedals, strings, straps, and hard to find guitar parts and accessories. They have Fender, Squier, Gibson
Epiphone, Martin, a few 2nd hand stuff and other popular global brands.
2ND FLOOR - Acoustic/Jazz guitars and this is where you can have your instrument appraised and sold.
b. Music Land Key -
(http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e270/shodawmoon/20160228_161523_zpsvhzw2vzo.jpg)
across the street from Ishibashi is a small department store and hidden at the 2nd floor is
this store, here you'll find a handful of boutique brands and local stuff. They also have a wide selection of brands but
I noticed that they have more local stuff compared to Ishibashi which would be great if youre looking to get the not so known stuff. I saw a Two-Rock amp and boutique priced gear. I saw handful of Custom shop Gibsons and Fenders and local high end brands.
c. Ikebe Music
(http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e270/shodawmoon/20160228_160423_zpsqsailis3.jpg)
- This place reminds me of Perfect Pitch and JB Music with aesthetics but without the ridiculous pricing, wasn't able to really look around this store but from what I can remember, they carry the ff: Fender, PRS and Bacchus and they have A LOT of Gigbags and hardcases. BUT
I was fortunate enough to get a glimpse of a small clinic/seminar of some sort conducted by a known local luthier at the 2nd floor.
I forgot the name of the guy but I took a pic of the activity at the 2ND floor.
d. Miki Gakki
(http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e270/shodawmoon/20160228_160223_zpswy4on197.jpg)
- probably the biggest instrument store in America-mura, this place has 4 floors full of awe-inspiring gear.
here you will find the same stuff you'll find in the branch in Shinsaibashi and a whole lot more. here I noticed that
they have a pretty great balance of imported and local products, and also they have the WIDEST range of guitars
from entry level brands all the way to rare vintage and boutique level instruments. I saw Squier, (vintage Fender), FGN,
Bacchus, Moon, Greco, Aria, Anderson, Mayones, Gretsch, Rozeo, Reverend, Warwick, Vanzandt, Rickenbacker, Vintage Epiphone, Vintage National, RS Guitarworks,
and a whole lot more brands I can't remember. they also have a great amount of parts and accessories.
MIKI GAKKI AMERICA-MURA divides their store in sections by floor as listed below:
GROUND FLOOR - USED/ OUTLET ELECTRIC GUITAR/ AMP/ PEDALS/ ACCESSORIES
2ND FLOOR - USED/ VINTAGE & HIGH END BASS
3RD FLOOR - USED/ VINTAGE & RARE ELECTRIC GUITAR
4TH FLOOR - ACOUSTIC FLAT/ ARCH TOP JAZZ GUITAR
One thing I really loved is that at every floor, they all have a certain aesthetic and they have pipe-in music that perfectly represents each floor.

Nung pumunta ako ng Kuala Lumpur Malaysia last year, may pinuntahan akong store. CK Music, mura naman sya.
125 Jalan Imbi
KL, Malaysia
walking distance sya sa mga malls of that area. Sa loob ng Mall na Lot 10 (ata ang pangalan) may mga music stores din. Pero di na ako nagtanung sa loob ng mall.

There's the Guitar Street in Ho Chi Minh City, full of stores on either side of the road that sell handcrafted guitars (mostly acoustics).
As far as stores that carry the usual brand suspects (e.g. Fender, Gibson, etc.), there aren't any that I know of in Vietnam.

Jingling ROad is pretty dead already, but Ishibashi is still there which I think is the only interesting shop there nowadays, Best Friend Music, World wide Music (under the basement of the mall linked to line 8 metro)
Parsons and some small shops...but it isnt as bustling as before..as online retail is more popular now.
Dorian Music Line 10 Jiangwan Stadium Station (THIS ONE IS LOADED WITH NICE STUFF)
Hippie Music Line 3 Da bai shu station
