hi new here! finally got involved on playing drums! im taking up my lessons on yupangco

tanong ko lang ano bang ok na brand for a starter drumset budget is 40-50k(pref. brands sana eh tama, yamaha, pearl, gretsch)
Title: Re: good brand starter drumset
Post by: palolo_worm on April 25, 2007, 10:08:24 PM
wow! 40-50k? for a starter kit? i wish i had that money when i first bought my set! :x
hmm.. i think a pearl export would be your choice, or gretsch, or pwede ring yamaha, kaso i think rydeen lang pasok dun, e mas ok ata mga pearl export kesa rydeen. :) pwede ka rin maghanap ng second hand kits for sale, for that money you can really get a great deal on good quality drums.

look sa buy and sell, 65K for a maple yamaha with cymbals. although second hand na siya, yamaha maples are really good drums.

so my point is that 50k can go a long long long way. choose wisely. :)

Post by: peeves24 on April 26, 2007, 09:18:18 AM
yan ang budget!  :-D

for your budget you can either get great drums with crappy cymbals or great cymbals with decent drums, you still have to compromise.

yamaha are the most expensive and will be out of your budget (at least for the stage customs, i think rydeens are the most expensive beginner drums) pearl exports are great drums with great hardware, definitely worth buying. tama superstar is as good as the exports and cheaper too. gretsch catalina maple would be the most bang for the buck at 6pcs with all maple shells at the price of a pearl export or less but you have you really inspect them as some that i have seen have dings on the bearing edge.

personally, id take great cymbals with decent drums and they would be the sabian aax perfomance set + the most expensive fernando drums. although wala sa choices mo yung fernando, its definitely worth considering

Check out the new Fernandos... And while your there at JB, check out the Zildjian Cymbals too.
For 50k, you can get your cymbal and drum fix satisfied quite easily. Bring a calculator to add 'em up.

I agree with sir peeves..if I were you the Gretsch Catalina Maple is a great buy!  :-D

Cymbals would be subjective to your own preference hence I would suggest you smacking some samples out where you can..bring your own sticks to get your usual stick feel instead of borrowing resident unbalanced crappy sticks  :-D

why settle for great cymbals?

sorry kung medyo silly question

why settle for great cymbals?

Hindi mo na mababago ang tunog ng isang crappy cymbal.
As for the crappy shell, pwede mo pang ayusin ang tuning o palitan ng drumhead.

hmmm. medyo hindi ko nagets. ang na-iimagine ko ay "why settle for great cymbals when you can get GREATER ones?" tama ba?

Baka naman mali lng ung gamit nya nung work n settle? May be he means "Why get a great cymbal?"
All I could say, average drums + Great cymbals sounds very nice. While Good drums + Low end cymbal, I could say, but this is only for myself, crappy. Why, coz I use the cymbal more than the drum kit. I mean, more han the 3 toms.
For me it goes like this when it comes to usage.
50-70% SNARE and Cymbals are used equally
25-40%  the bass
5-10% the Toms

Ganyan ako gumamit kc di naman alga ako marunong. hehehe I could say, sa mga nakita ko at ndinig kong music at drum solos, halos malapit un dyan. So Get the Best Cymbals and snare u can afford then find a decent drum with good hardware. Well, hat is kung limited ang cash. But, if you really have alot of money, GET ALL THE BEST ITEMS!

Well, that is how I see it. Ung mga pro, can you enlighthen me kung mali or may kulang ung pagkakaintindi ko.

mukhang ganun nga. bastat masasabi ko rin, maraming mga drum sets na maganda sa market ngayon. like what sir dindin said, fernandos are really good drums at a reasonable price. for that, makakakuha ka pa ng magagandang cymbals na tatagal talaga, at maraming drum heads at drumsticks. :)

May point sya dun.
That will be an affordable drumset, but good one? not that sure. Pero un e sa tingin ko lng.
My reason is the hardware. As a beginner, Im sure mag eexperiment yan sa tuning, baka dun pa lng bumigay n, like ung nakuha ng brother ko.

I still go for the cymbals, that satisfies your ears and budget. I haggle with the prices here, lahat kasi ng cymbals ko used. I even got lucky, Just imagine an 18" old model AAX china, for less than 5K kasama shipping, got it from ebay. hanap ka ng mga new sellers na paypal ang gamit para safe. For my other cymbals, it took me about 8 moths to complete them. Dealing with a seller to another. Sulit naman ung pag hihintay.

By the way, buying a good cymbal will benefit u in the end. Mataas resale value. I  bought some used ones before, and ended not liking the sound. I sold them the same price I got them. Wala akong talo kundi pamasahe at oras.

Just be patient, darating ka din dun sa sound na gusto mo. And it will make you want to practice more.

I need some pro opinion from you guys...

and my brother wants to take-up sa drum lessons this summer.

my dad wants me to find him a good kit but the thing is that I know very little about drums because im a guitarist by heart... can you give me some tips what to look for in a good drum kit? like brand names, type of wood used, cymbals and etc...

by the way the budget is around 15-20K max...

thanks! :-)

no, i dont know the seller and i will not have commission  :-D

its a good starter set since it has everything that a beginner will need. you will have to upgrade the pedal and cymbals but it can be done much much later

with your budget I would look for a 2nd hand Pearl Forum or maybe even an export..I've seen some around that price range..that is if you want good drums tapos ordinary cymbals..

if you want good cymbals then install good heads on an affordable drums pwede rin..eto nagustuhan ko http://talk.philmusic.com/board/index.php/topic,46005.0.html

Rough estimates if I were to buy a new kit now with that budget

Fernando kit - 18k
sell the snare drum and get a chad smith snare probably - 8-9k

Heads will cost around 5-6k siguro kung kasama yung bass drum (at baka iisang head lang to, batter lang for all). Try Sir Vinci.  Good prices!

Decent hi-hat - meron dyan between 6-8K.  May nagbebenta ng Sabian HH hats for 7K.  Cheaper hats, pwede na yung 2nd hand B8 (3.5-4K) or PST5 (3.5-4k).  I'd pick the PST5 between the two, ganda ng tunog nya live.

Crash - 2nd hand for 4-5k.  Avedis, Acustom or AAX crash na 16-18".  Yung avedis mura for sure. nabili ko 18" for 5.5K sa JB last year.

ride - kung may tira pa, abang ka ng mura.  Wouldn't recommend ZBT kasi hindi IMO di maganda tunog nya.  Medyo mahal ang mga ride pero abang ka ng avedis, may magbebenta minsan ng 6K.

Total:
With the ride cymbal, 50k.

Guitarista talaga ako. Pero right now I'm playing the drums for my band. iniwan kami ng drummer namen. "Family probs" daw. Ewan. Anyway, I'm opting to get a set myself. But probably I'll start with the cymbals first since we usually get together as a band in the studios.  So ano ang "ok" na entry level cymbals? Siguro crash muna unahin ko.  I'm really confused on whether I get (in no particular order) Sabian, Zildjian or Paiste.  Budget? around 3-5k. Sana po matulungan po niyo ako. :)

3-5k for a whole set? I'm afraid you'll only get brass/entry-level cymbals for that price,  and baka second-hand pa (Avoid Planet Z and Solar!). My suggestion, unahin mo ang hi-hats. Then Crash. Then Ride. 3k can get you a pretty good second-hand cymbal. You'll probably be looking at a ZBT/ZXT for Zildjian, B8 for Sabian, and PST3/PST5 for Paiste.

I know that an brand entry level set of cymbals would cost around 15k. Tama ba? The 3-5k budget would be for a single cymbal. Either a pair of hihats or crash.  Btw, what's next to the entry level ones? and is there any noticeable difference with these brands of cymbals?

Yep, a new ZBT or B8 set costs around 15k. These entry-level sheet bronze cymbals may be far in quality from the expensive cast bronzes (which may cost 10k++ per cymbal), but they are much better sounding and more durable than cheap brass like Planet Z's and Solar's like I mentioned. They're definitely usable, and you can gig with them.

Technically, the brands you mentioned (Fernando, Lazer, Maya, Powerbeat, Regal...) are not local.  These are entry-level (budget) brands which are sourced from Taiwan or China, and these are popular in our local market.  Though I may be wrong.

Fernando's drums have greatly improved in recent years.

Fernando's drums have greatly improved in recent years.

But they recently Downgraded the Fernandos.

IMO The "Birch" Fernando is a Big Mistake. Why? When you hear the Brand Fernando what comes up to your mind? Yes you're right, entry level Kits. Kaya nga naubos lang sila when they slashed almost half of its price.

And yes The "Birch" Fernandos are good kits but it's almost the same price ng Gretsch, Sonor and Ludwig. So anu Bibilhin mo?

The new(downgraded) Fernado Drums now is at affordable price again and look better than the previous kits.

Fernando drums, truly entry level and affordable kit for the starting Pinoy drummers.

What I meant was, compared to the older-model Fernandos, the newer and more recent ones have improved, quality-wise.  Shell quality is better.  Hardware is better.  Finishes are better.  But that's a good observation too, bro Sandy.  :-)
