Title: Idol, Can You Teach Me How To Play Drums?
Post by: Bammbamm on October 23, 2008, 07:22:43 PM
What would you do if a very enthusiastic fan of yours, who is a total drum newbie, approached you for a "regular" drum lessons/tutorial with fee.
Will you accept the offer even though you're not really an experienced drum teacher?
In case you accept the offer, how much will you rate yourself, (payment per hour) and how will you arrange the lessons for him?

or..

Will you teach him for free? (because you're not really a drum teacher, and he's your avid fan anyway)

If you don't need the money, and teaching him wouldn't eat away much of your time, I guess you could do it for free.
But if he insists on paying you, then accept the offer.
Imo you don't need to be a "real" drum teacher to teach. That level of expertise in teaching will be more suited for experienced students.
 :-)

not all great drummers can teach, and not all great teachers are good drummers. gift ang teaching...kaya bilib ako sa mga teachers na magaling mag explain, yung na sisimplify nila yung mga bagay na alam mong mahirap.  :-D

Some teachers audition their students to see what needs to be developed while other teachers are just too good.

But being a teacher of your own craft may help you. It just takes time and a lot of perseverance, sooner or later, you will nail those chops you're aiming for. :-)

If you know how to teach then accept his offer. It's really up to you whether you charge him or not. But many drummers who think they are good often think they can teach as well. This is not fair to a beginner drummer who may learn bad habits from the beginning. So even if you are teaching the very BASIC you should know how to teach the very basic well. Otherwise the most important foundation in his or her learning will be destroyed with bad habits. Teaching is about getting the message across and bringing a student from the known to the unknown. Understanding how they percieve what you are saying. If you cant teach then i would do the honorable thing and refer him to a teacher. Somebody can be the best drummer in the world but if they cant teach then they probably shouldnt. Just my honest opinion.

Just use your own judgement to teach good habits from the start and you are good to go bro.
