If you could travel back in time and witness first-hand the making of any (as in, any) particular album, what would it be, and why?
Being a Steely Dan fan, I'd sit in on the 'Aja' sessions ...
Just to witness how Steve Gadd sight-read the drum charts on the title cut and played it perfectly in one take ... Damn! Talk about perfect time! And to think Donald Fagen and Walter Becker were such nitpickers with very exacting standards..
But that's just icing on the cake..
It'd be awesome just to see all those top-flight jazz and session cats walking in ... Carlton, Ritenour, Jay Graydon, Tom Scott, Wayne Shorter, Michael Brecker, Chuck Rainey, Bernard Purdie (creator of the 'Purdie Shuffle,' who inspired Jeff Porcaro's famous drum pattern in Toto's 'Rosanna')
It'd also be interesting to hear Carlton's version of the 'Peg' solo, and maybe ask Fagen and Brecker why they chose Graydon's version (not that it ain't any good. It sounds perfect as it is ..)
How about you guys?
