Where to start? How to start? In loosing weight...

What's the very first thing to do if you've decided to shed those unwanted extra weights you have?

Yung iba hindi naman talaga runners, then biglang mag ja-jogging full blast, then mahihilo o sasakit ang katawan, then maaayawan na dahil sa naexperience nilang pagka-hilo o sakit ng katawan, tas di na magsisimula ulet. Di na pumayat.

Let's ask those who have their experience. When they started and how they started. :)

What are the "first things first" in planning to do so?
Diet?
Cardio? What kind of cardio exercise?
Weight lifting?

first thing you need to do is find something you love doing ... no matter how simple; badminton, ping pong, cycling, walking, etc.

when you find that, be sure to step out of your comfort zone. give yourself a month to just do something regularly ... when you find yourself committing to that, then you can raise the notch up a little by making it a point to work harder. do not overwork yourself, or else you'd lose interest fast. just make yourself more tired each month, and after 3 or 4 months, you can start making weekly or bi-weekly challenge increases.

pretty soon, you'd find yourself doing athletic feats like running without stopping for 30 minutes, which translates to you finishing 5k without having to stop cause of exhaustion.

it is very important to find a good coach or training companion ... even if you have to spend money for it. some people cheap out on instructors cause it could cost something like 8k a month, but then again... what's 8k a month compared to a heart surgery or a weekly kidney dialysis, right?

working out is more of a battle with your mind than body actually. if i was only in manila i could use a fitness group, cause while my athletic abilities are still higher than average, my overall fitness and my diet has been slipping and my mental focus isn't as sharp. i am sort of bored with my gym routine, and i havent been challenging myself.

some ways to measure how hard you are working (cardio):

1.) able to read a book, watch a movie, etc. = very relaxed. this is only good for cool downs

2.) able to sing a song or hold a conversation, but you find yourself not getting the timing right = this is where beginners should be aiming. you will be working in something they call the "fat burning zone." that's just a name though, do not intend to stay there for more than a month or 3 months, if you really are that out of shape.

3.) having a hard time singing a song but still aware of everything. your mind is still clear and you can still laugh at jokes = this is where you should be aiming for majority of your workout, even when you are in advance mode.

4.) very tired, panting hard, can still follow instructions = this is what you call "hard training" day. you have to get to this stage to increase your fitness level. if you are a beginner, it is almost impossible for you reach this level without injuring yourself or throwing up. most beginners actually try to hit this level and end up quitting their workout plan. do not push yourself to this stage under 3 or 4 months.


5.) complete exhaustion = this is the part where you go into overdrive, most likely, you will throw up or get injured. if you are not healthy, you could actually die. this stage is only reserved for fit and healthy people.

Chakkyman,I started jogging last December,just to sharpen my focus and I'm not getting younger.hehe
Shedding some lose weight from size 34 e maluwag na 32 pants ko,hehe,161 to 149 lbs.
5 months of jogging twice a week 10km of running 10km of walking per week yan.

I started small increments,hihingalin Ka talaga,so run then walk,then run and walk. Then your enemy is yourself,Kung sasabihin mo lang na nakakapagod,you lose. You have to motivate and push yourself.
Push harder,hehe,And listen to some music,ginagawa ko nung nags start ako,I try to run and not stop until the song finishes,hehe,ngayon isang album ng lamb of god na natatapos ko tapos cool down na by walking.
Warm up ko,walking lang,then when I'm ready to urn,I stretch.then Jog lang,don't go full blast.
Your aim is not to stop as possible and hold your pace,you are not training for sprinting,hehe.

Benefits ko e better and strong control of foot technique plus I have time to listen albums that I don't get to hear all the time,when I walk going to memorial,I listen to a jazz album,then when I jog I listen to fast paced songs to help me with my pace,parang awa wag Ka making love songs when jogging,hehe. When I go home I listen to another album. Hehe,saya di ba? Music and fitness together. ^-^ ^-^

Tamad ako, so hindi ako mahilig mag exercise o mag strict diet shiz. So eto yung naging technique ko nung na-lose ko yung 15 lbs ko na excess weight.

The Tamad/Kuripot Guide to Losing (a little) Weight

Step 1: Learn to know if you are really hungry or not.

One of the biggest factors in weight gain is over eating. Sanay lang minsan yung katawan natin na pag may craving or walang ginagawa, naghahanap ng mangunguya. Ganun ako. So I trained myself to know when my body actually needs food, or when I'm just looking for something to chew on. Technique: pag ginutom, inom ng malamig na tubig. Nakakarefresh kasi ang malamig na tubig, di tulad ng lukewarm water, nakakagutom. Wait five to ten minutes, tapos usually marerealize mo, uhaw lang pala ang katawan mo. Sometimes kasi when we crave, we wrongly train our bodies to look for hydration in solid foods instead of drinks. So pag nagutom, drink a glass of cold water and wait. It could be all you need.

Step 2: Restrict your serving size. And timing.

Di katulad ng ibang diet na counted ang calories, tapos scheduled ang meals depende sa angulo ng sikat ng araw sa Stonehenge, at restricted ang food types, ang gagawin mo lang eh kainin yung lagi mong kinakain nang sakto lang. Ibig sabihin, wala munang extra rice, walang upsize, walang add-on. Sa food court, dun ka lang sa 1 meat+1veggie 1 rice and free sabaw. Sa Jollibee, isang B1 lang, no questions asked. Sa bahay 1 cup na rice lang at saktong ulam lang. Tapos pag meryenda, try mo isang pirasong kahit ano lang ang kainin mo tapos tubig. Isang stick ng banana q, isang slice ng pizza, whatever, basta isa lang. Ang goal mo dito ay i-train yung sikmura mo na lumiit yung capacity sa isang period ng kainan. Nung 7 lbs na ang na-lose ko hindi ko na nga kaya umubos ng isang plato ng spaghetti sa restaurant. Also, try to time your meals, spaced evenly apart. Para 1) hindi ulit mag expand yung capacity ng tiyan mo at 2) para ma-train mo yung body mo na hindi magutom masyado as in Step 1.

Step 3: Make better food choices.

Try substituting better foods. Simple, pero medyo mahirap. Ako ang substitution ko, for lunch, tuna at dalawang mansanas lang, for two months. Medyo bitin, but it gets me going until merienda time. Try red rice. Mahal, oo, pero sa totoo lang wala pang one cup ang kailangan mo sa isang normal na meal, so bawi naman sa pera at calories. Ang dessert at merienda fruits. Ang breakfast wala munang fried, tinapay na masarap at kape, ayos yan. At kung anuman ang mga artificial at naka foil o garapon na kinakain mo, try o palitan ng makikita mo lang sa palengke. Magluto ka ng sariling ulam sa sabado o linggo, marami, tapos ilagay mo sa mga maliit na plastic o microwaveable container tapos initin at baunin.

Step 4: KAPE.

Coffee is a stimulant, and I find that it works well in keeping my metabolism up. Wag mo isipin na pampapayat ang kape, pero isipin mo na pang-alalay sya sa katawan mo na i-burn ang calories na kinakain mo. Don't put too much sugar, and if possible, no creamer. Limit to 5 cups a day, kasi 100 calories na yun!

Step 5: Splurge once a week!!

Sa tingin ko necessary ang may cheat day talaga. Pag wala kang cheat day, nagccrave yung katawan mo ng mga nutrients ng mga pagkain na pinagkakait mo sa sarili mo. At pag matagal mong hindi nakain yung mga bagay na yun, ayun na, balik ka na sa dati. Keyword: balance. It's good to be bad sometimes. Sometimes lang.

Step 6: Resistance Training/Weights

Oo na sinabi ko na hindi ako mahilig mag exercise, but hear me out. Syempre, goal ang mag lose ng weight. Pero factor din na sa looks, may bearing din pag maganda yung pagkatone mg muscles mo. PLUS kahit marami kang extra fats, iba pa rin yung hugis pag may masel, whether lalaki or babae. Parang MMA fighter lang na sa heavyweight division, mataba sa gilid-gilid pero athletic pa rin ang dating. Kung "the essentials" lang, para sa akin: squats, pushups (regular and clip wings), crunches, bicep curls, plank. Ang goal nito ay hindi weight loss talaga, although nakakatulong din kasi more muscle = more fat burners, pero para ma-augment yung weight loss mo ng improvement ng looks mo. Crunches proven yan na hindi nakakaliit ng tiyan, pero pag toned yan, iba pa rin ang dating kahit muffin top. Also, both men and women benefit from toned arms, ang fit tingnan. Kahit ten reps lang each, 30 second plank every morning and evening, ok na yan!

im from 192lbs down to 165 lbs. And in ain't easy.. from Obese down to overweight.. im still. my BMI was from 31+ before
and im just 5'4"

So what did i do first?

Diet - seryosong diet. hindi ung, babawi n lang ako bukas or konting ganyan lang.. kapag sinabing diet.. diet talaga.. bawal ang bawal.. Ako, bawal ang rice, pero sagana ako sa gulay at tubig. Mag umpisa sa 1 cup of rice, down to half cup, hanggang sa maeradicate mo.

Excercise - ung tunay na excercise, hindi ung dahil sumama ka lang.. pwede mo umpisahan dun, pero pagdating sa dulo, ikaw pa rin ang magpapatuloy. tip? Sumali sa mga fun run. at maghanap ng mga chicks. dito sa alabang maraming chicks habang tumatakbo, magandang inspirasyon.

Inumin - Matutuong uminom ng tubig lang sa pyesta at lamunan, hindi ka pinagbabawalan kumain, ung ayos lang, matuto rin uminom ng tsaa, ung tea bag ah? hindi ung milktea. madali makapag patunaw ng kinain ung tsaa at makapag patunaw ng taba.. maniwala ka sakin.

*Basketball twice a week - kinse-kinse games (race to 30), 3 games in two hours, try to play as hard as you can every game
*No rice two days a week - monday and thursday no rice days ko, saging or singkamas instead
*No more than 1 cup of rice every meal

Well, una kasi, nahihirapan na ako kapag naglalakad.. panay inom namin.. after mag eat all u can. sabay ng 4 na boteng beer.

diet alone.. wont work.. it took me around 6 mos for diet lang, mejo namayat but hind ganun ka noticeable.

Hahaha, d naman, mejo nag lie low ako sa pagtakbo after ng 42k ko nugn oct 2013. Hindi naman ako tumaba, pero mejo tumaas lang ung maintaining weight ko to 170..

but now, im back to 165.. hopefully maging 155 ako by the end of july..
kaya mo yan! enjoy magexcercise at tumakbo..

saken baliktad kay tipipeski ... tumaba naman ako. its not the first time. minsan nagiging overconfident ako sa athletic abilities ko, pinapabayaan ko yung diet ko.

one thing i have to say though ... for everytime na tumaba ka uli pagkatapos mong pumayat, nagiging mas mahirap pumayat uli kasi nag adapt na ang katawan mo sa workout. i barely even get muscle pains anymore, kahit na new workout.

Yung soreness ng katawan mo decreases as you work out constantly. Magbibilang ka pa ng weeks depende sa intensity mo sa workout. As others have said, cut on your cups of rice per meal. One tip I had was eat many (dont splurge) during breakfast ("you break your fasting after sleeping"), you need lots of energy in the morning before you go to school/work. Then reduce gradually yung kain mo for lunch, meryenda, and dinner.

When you choose your physical activity (running,basketball,boxing,etc), wag ka magsasawa dahil wala kang naaachieve na loss in weight instantly. Yung start ang crucial point dahil you dont quickly see the results.

+1 Dito sir. Iba iba kasi tayo ng interests. Like for many people, nangangayayat sila sa running, ako hindi, sobrang tumataas kasi carb craving ko pag nagcacardio ng malupit. I think the best way to lose fat is to choose an activity that you like talaga..running man yan or biking or boxing or weightlifting. Although 70% sa diet talaga nakasalalay pag nagbabawas ka, very important pa rin yung exercise para di bumaba metabolism mo dahil sa pagbababa mo ng calorie intake.

I am not speaking in general, pero for me, pinaka effective na nag bubuhat. I am not in a calorie deficit diet pero mas pili yung mga food na kinakain, higher protein than my usual diet. Weightlifting lang at boxing ang umuubra sa akin.

At syempre wag mawawalan ng pag asa, go lang ng go, mahirap kasi talaga at may mga times na magpplateau angvweight loss, pero go pa rin dapat. Consistency is the key. :)

pero ako from 185lbs nasa 175 nako, dapat 162lbs lang ako sa height ko. (BMI)
try mo kayang kalabitin baka tumunog...

One motivation I do is to purchase an expensive running shoes, its a way for myself to have a guilt feeling whenever I skip my schedule run/walk activity. I tell to myself that "bibile-bile ka ng mahal na sapatos di mo naman gagamitin nasa kahon lang" pati si Misis minsan ganun sinasabi sa akin kaya pinapakita ko na gamit na gamit naman yung shoes na binibile ko.

But then the sad part di pa ako nakakakita ng improvement in 2 months, since yung diet part ang di ko macontrol.

I tell to myself that "bibile-bile ka ng mahal na sapatos di mo naman gagamitin nasa kahon lang" pati si Misis minsan ganun sinasabi sa akin kaya pinapakita ko na gamit na gamit naman yung shoes na binibile ko.

But then the sad part di pa ako nakakakita ng improvement in 2 months, since yung diet part ang di ko macontrol.

May part din ako na ganito. I never bought new clothes which were appropriate for my size back then. I wasn't that big but my stomach was the killer. I started working out this january and I've fitted back on those clothes since then.
The problem was my company uniform, since lumiit yung baywang ko bumabagsak na yung pants ko.

shadow boxing every morning
may sit ups pa!

pero ambagal ng progress ko sa pag bawas ng timbang.
try mo kayang kalabitin baka tumunog...
