to an ordinary person, or someone who have no ideas about guitar
what would be your reply?

to me it may sound a simple question..
but somehow it's a bit deep,

like "how will you convince me to get a guitar either cheap or expensive" or something alike..

i was asked the same question by my boss,

what could be your answer?

Expensive vs. Cheap is a relative term. I find PRS SE guitars expensive but it will be considered cheap by (name withheld by request).

Now, if this question is asked by a newbie, I will say dependable brands like Epiphone or Fender Squire is the way to go.

Overall build and feel. Try some and unbiasedly judge it if it is worth the price.

For me, the question is subjective, just like what Letour said.

You set a pricepoint before buying a guitar, then go from there.. if you go over your pricepoint, but is satisfied with the guitar, you may not consider it as expensive. If you get a guitar lower than the set pricepoint, but ur not satisfied with it, you may think it's expensive for what you got it for.

This why you always would want to test out the guitar first before checking the price..

Haha. Just kidding. From experience, it is easier to find magical guitars in the higher price points and there are more dogs in the lower pricepoints. Pero definitely may chamba. I've always told the story of the Daphne Blue Tokai in Lyric Glorietta which cost 8.9k only but was a beast to play. Whenever I find magical guitars in the lower pricepoint I make sure to grab it off the shelves hehe. Chambahan lang talaga.

Test.. test and test. A great guitar will make itself known within the first few seconds of trying it out off the shelf. When this happens, you better be ready with your wallet.

I definitely agree. It is relative the caliber of gear you already have in your stable.

a cheap guitar might become expensive not because of where it is made but how it performs/sounds.

A tokai that was made in china might sound good as hell because of "hiyaw." The price of that certain guitar might skyrocketed after our beloved fm55 proved it to the people of music world.

PS. it depends on "hiyaw."

I'd give an analogy like, 'Iphone vs. MyPhone' that should give them an idea.

if you're trying to convince someone to allow you to get an expensive guitar, just talk crap about the cheap ones :)
but seriously, first, what is your definition of cheap and expensive in terms of $$$? because a Gibson les paul studio might be cheap for others but expensive for others

But seriously...

About six months ago, I had a run in with a beautiful and almost mint sounding 1957 Les Paul Junior.  It was one of those that had hiyaw.  It had a great sounding P-90.  It had original frets in mint condition.  I ABed it against a vintage 1956 Fender Telecaster and the LP just blew it out of the water.  The only down side was that the jack had been replaced.  It was going for about P300,000.  I did not pull the trigger because I was NOT ready to do vintage yet AND the frets despite being in original condition felt too low and it was hard to bend.

Some time later, I learnt that a similar Gibson Custom Shop Recreation would cost around P200,000.  And then a bit much later, Crescendo would sell their 2015 Gibson USA Les Paul Juniors (the one with robo tuners and larger headstock with the ugly Les Paul signature) for around P30,000.

So, I ask you what's expensive and what's cheap?

Case 1: In my opinion, the 1957 vintage Les Paul is Cheap.  Why?  It was a rare vintage instrument with hiyaw.  Plus a great sounding dog ear P90 which is so so so hard to find.  And more importantly, for the cheapo people, the 1957 had Honduran Mahogany and a Brazilian Rose wood fingerboard which are NOT available options on any current Gibson being produced today.

Case 2: In the event that all 3 Les Paul Juniors had hiyaw, I would buy BOTH the original 1957 and the Gibson USA Les Paul Junior circa 2015.  Why would I buy that ugly Gibson USA Les Paul Junior?  Because it was cheap.

P.S. Les Paul Juniors back in the day which meant 1950s were considered cheap.  The only reason I can think about why its so expensive today is its 50s connection to the so called Golden Age of Gibson.  If we probably called it Greco, it would still be cheap today.

By the way, I can only heap praises on the dog ear Les Paul Junior.  It has a unique sound that sounds classic rock. Nothing else sounds like it assuming you find one with hiyaw and a great sounding dog ear P90.

About 10 years ago, I was introduced to the Les Paul Junior when I was at Chelsea Guitars and lo and behold, GE Smith and Dan Chelsea had a conversation with me.  I could not believe it that GE Smith sold his bursts to collect Les Paul Juniors!  At that time he had a signature Tele with Fender.  They were insisting that the Juniors really were more rock n roll and raw.  I have to agree.

though there are amazing great playing squiers or epiphones...In the long run those nice "branded" ones are more worthwhile to keep and age together with you gracefully... and their prices hold their value well as years go by and easier to sell off...

Yeah but an expensive guitar stays in tune longer than a cheap guitar.  With a well set up expensive guitar, it will stay in tune the whole night.
