airguitarist,
If you have the bandwidth, why not download hydrogen? It's an open source drum machine program which is about 5.1 MB. It's open source, meaning the source code is freely available to everybody, and licensed under GPL (General Public License). With GPL, it is perfectly OK to make copies, distribute, alter or even sell the program for profit. This way, you don't have to do your window shopping.
The program was originally written for the Linux platform but there is a Windows XP installer. The only irriration for the XP version is that when you open the program, it also launches the DOS command prompt window. But, hey, the program is free of charge so why complain? As far as I know the Linux version does not exhibit any weird behavior.
With regards to its usage, hydrogen is easy to program and it comes with decent sounding drum presets. The user interface is easy enough to navigate. While I have never tried proprietary drum machine programs, hydrogen is good enough for me.
There are likewise a couple of open source sequencer and soft synth programs for Linux which, for lack of time, I have not yet tried. Rosegarden, Muse, Seq24 all look promising but I believe they have not been ported to Windows.
