improving your 16 beats
« on: November 01, 2007, 02:04:36 PM »
nowadays maraming good drummers (not the professional ha) na talagang
ganun klaseng technique or sablay.

Junboy of The Dawn used to do that style in most of their songs wayback the new wave era but now i noticed na pag may gig sila hindi na masyado sya sa 16beats.

How to improve it?  :-D

thanks man

practice it like you would practice single strokes.

or play your kit, doing four on the floor, 16 note beats on the hi hat with steady backbeats.

Junboy probably doesn't do it too often nowadays as the Dawn has been "writing" or "playing" differently for the past few years due to line up changes and evolution in songwriting. But he does incorporates some rudimental sticking patterns on the hats beside the regular steady 16 beat groove.

yup!!practice it using single strokes and it would be much better if you would add some accents to it, try listening to All american reject's move along, their drummer uses that groove on chorus

yeah...accents give variety and subdivisions...accents are cool!

it's your next step if you've mastered steady and even 16 beats.

Do the Moeller drills. 2's, 3's then 4's. This should help you in developing speed and getting used to accents. Plus, hindi lang for hi-hats eto.

Search ka sa You Tube ng "Moeller Technique" for demos.

I badly suggest that you start slowly... that is the very key to drumming... START REAL SLOW, use a metronome for this matter, halos lahat, sakit ng drummer eh yung tiempo, habang early pa start using it kung wala make use of your wall clock or anything, mahirap na kasing baguhin yan pagnakasanayan na.... mas magandang ngayon pa lang start from the fundamentals specially ung 16 note na ganyan, kasi may iba bumibilis pag ginagamit na nila ung 16th note groove, bro later na lang ung moeller and 16note on one hand or shuffle w/ or /o accents, ang importante ung tiempo mu and calrity and talbog nung palo mu, ung ibang techniques sobrang dali na lang.... and yes try doing some researching in youtube or in www.drummerworld.com this ill help you a lot!!!!  :-D God Bless BROTHA'!!!! :-D

eto po example ng accent sa 16 beat,

H - Accent <
h - No Accent >

Standard 16 beat:
H h h h   H h h h   H h h h   H h h h

With Accent:
H h h H   h h H h   h H h h   H h h H

Hope it helps.

Just let your music fill the empty spaces in you. It's all you have so take advantage of it. It's a gift!

I believe this is a good book and hindi lang sa jung dnb applicable ung mga exercises.. simple lang, madaling intindihin and makakatulong din sa hats, snare and kick coordination.

basically exercises and proper technique siguro...

Para sa kin when it comes to 16 notes I always think of them
in a musical manner rather than technique kaya I look for
songs that has 16 notes hi-hat grooves and play along
those.

Sa mga old new wave marami nyan like that song
of this band called Curiosity killed the Cat and their
song Down to Earth 16 beat tlga swak na swak sa chorus nya.
Dun sa album nilang Keep your Distance marami 16 note groove
don.

africa, etc etc...tsaka pala...tom sawyer by rush hehe.

also check out jeff porcaro's drum instructional vid swak na swak mga
turo nya about 16 note grooves. nasa youtube na halos yan.

My recent discovery: Practice 16ths on hihats accompanied by 110 bps 3-2 clave on metronome. Then apply it with different rudiments around the kit.
It made 16 beat sound new and not too straight and tight. Practice it with a cassette recorder to record yourself. Mapapansin mo nag so- songo ka na!
So Be It.

I got back using the two hand 16 beat dahil kelangan sa kanta. And it's a big difference na since i began drumming.

Pshht psshht yeah!

for alternating 16 notes ride on the hihat  hinaan mo ng konti yung left mo tapos accent mo pa yung
of course dipende pa rin sa kanta or style of music.
