Mixers with tape returns?
« on: September 26, 2008, 12:26:32 AM »
What brands and models have tape returns? I'm thinking of getting one that has 8 returns for the 8 track recorder in my home studio. Thanks!

I'd rather be sharp than flat.

You're looking for something like this A&H PA28 stereo live mixer:

I think they were called split-board mixers (someone correct me if I'm wrong) because as you can see, the right-hand 8 channels were sometimes meant for monitoring the outputs of 8-track recorders. These mixers can be expensive little buggers. If you have a 24- or 32-input mixer, you can reserve 8 channels for your tape returns without needing something like that A&H board.
Sonar 4.04PE/5.2PE/7.02PE/8.31 PE, Project 5 v2.5.1, EmulatorX 1.5, Cubase SL2, Ableton Live 7.14,  Intel Q6600 MSI P43 Neo 4Gb Crucial Ballistix Tracer DDR2-800, Emu 1820m, Yamaha DSP Factory, Terratec DMX 6fire

There are two types of mixer consoles in the analog realm.  One is an in-line console, and the other one is a split console.  The way it is is that the faders, say 1 - 24 are all input faders with their signals coming from mics, line, etc, and a corresponding 24 faders control the outputs coming from the tape machine.  These faders would normally be the return faders.  A typical example of these types of consoles are the old Soundcraft 2400 and DDA Consoles that were previously found in Greenhill Studios and Viva.  What we have at TRACKS is a combination split/in-line, where the faders serve as both line ins and outs but there is another 24 small faders that serve as returns.  Such is the complexity of life during the analog days, ... but it was fun!

It still is, Mike. I long for the smell of tape in a newly opened box.  :-D

hope this helps.

So far I have used voxengo and PSP. But I always find myself tinkering with the deafult of sonar.

Start with everything at 0 db then adjust levels to taste (usually downward)' others sometimes start with all faders down - it's subjective. Once you got the levels right, only then should you start adjusting EQ. If you can't hear the diff. bet. low/mid/hi eq adjustments, I don't think you should be at the mixing desk.

Sorry I am not in hands on with protools and all those digidesign family. Im sure they are good since they are industry standard.

Everything boils down to your ears actually. Take a good listening. And dont ever forget to keep listening to several good references.
