i have a funny story about gambale

i was bringing my mom to LAX, tom bradley, on her way back to the airport...then as i there i decided to pass by the magazine stand. on my way to the magazine stand, i see this guy carrying a sax...i immediately noticed him because of the sax bag...and i thought "hey! a fellow musician". then as i passed him. the image of the sax guy materialized in my head...bald...short...white hair...oh my effin' lord! that guy looks just like FRANK GAMBALE! so i hesitate for awhile and gathered the courage to come up to this guy who was at that time smoochin' with his wife...then finally, i approached him...

"hey, are you frank gambale!"
and he goes, "yes"

GODDAMN!!! IT'S HIM!!!

so we had a nice little conversation, i asked him about LA Music Academy, where he teaches, about his albums etc etc...i told him i was studying his sweep picking technique...he told me he was on his way to china or "chiner" as he put it...to play a couple of shows...

so finally, after like 10 mins, i let him go coz he had to go! haha...

i noticed though, he was surprised that i knew who he was...i guess konti lang talaga may kilala sa mga fusion players...the sad truth about jazz...ala masyadong nakukuhang acknowledement...

ok i know i said it was a "funny" story when it really wasn't...so friggin' sue me!

another "funny" gambale story

this happened around 3 years before the airport incident. i watched him perform at the key club in sunset...he was playing with steve smith and kai eckhart...back to back with larry coryell...

after the set, i approached him as he was packing up his stuff (what? no roadies?!?! shame!)

we're like "hey"!

and he's like "did we play ok, tonight"?

i couldn't say anything man, i wanted to say "are you friggin' kidding me?!!?"

sobrang humble pare, nag fifishing pa...hahaha...

larry coryell was pretty cool too, we hung out and talked by the bar after their set...he even introduced me to his son...i think julian was the name...and he played the same music his dad played...if i remember correctly...

i think it's funny coz these guys are legends and i feel so lucky to have had the chance to have conversations with them. basta...it was a real great experience...very inspiring...

i dunno man...if you were in the airport and you saw your guitar hero waiting in line...i dunno about you, but that's the last thing that would cross my mind...to ask him why he's carrying a sax...hehehe...i'd rather ask him something like "so frank, what's the meaning of life?" BWAHAHA!
