i use this:

i bought it at handyman for Php 44.75 a can and two years na to hindi ko pa na uubos!

IMO works better than Pledge because it cuts all the hand grease off the lacquer layer.

even an old guitar looks nice and clean after polishing with it  :-D

wipe it til it shines sabi nga..

i just just rub on lightly. nung bago pa id put a lot and end up with a lot of residue crud on the edges until i figured out the correct amount to apply... just a few dabs.

IMO though i love the smell of MC, well maybe its just me.

yep. apply lemon oil or a fretboard conditioner thing (haha d ko alam anong mga brand or anong exact na tawag) regularly.

pangit naman tignan if your guitar looks all shiny and clean tapos the fretboard is all chippy and dirty from hand grease and whatever

Title: Re: cleaning the guitar
Post by: siore on March 16, 2008, 06:05:24 PM
What about the fretboard?  Over time it gets dull and dry, and sometimes crusty from stuff in your sweat.  I've heard about twice some guys using baby oil.  I've read someone also using calamansi juice mixed with baby oil.  What's up with that??

Alam ko lng, apply ng fretboard cleaner (naptha lighter fluid?), tapos lemon oil afterwards.

So how do you restore that smooth shiny glow to your fretboard?  Any household items you use?

OT:  I've searched "clean, cleaner, cleaning, fret clean..." but the search engine takes me to this thread.  So hey, hope I posted right.

PLEDGE?!?  You guys are crazy to use Pledge on your guitars.  Matapang masyado ang Pledge.  You might not immediately see the "damage" it can cause, but antayin niyo lang.  I guarantee that hindi aabot sa "vintage years" yung mga gitara niyo kung puro Pledge ang panglinis ninyo.

If you can't find a good, real guitar polish, you're better off just wiping it down after every use with a dry, clean cloth.

You're talking about guitar body di ba?

ni try ko lagyan ng turtle wax ung likod nung body nung electric guitar ko for experiment purposes.. its been a week na and makintab paren sya.. nalagyan na ng sangkatutak na pawis ung likod ng body pero isang wipe lang ng basahan makintab nanaman.. ibang iba ung kintab nung likod ng body compared dun sa harap.. nawala din ung mga light scratches.. wahahehehe.. pero suggestion ko lang, before nyo lagyan ng kahit anong pang linis, wipe your axe with dry cloth muna and make sure na walang dust or kahit anong libag.. ung sa kotse kasi namen naging permanent ung ibang dumi kasi nilagyan ko agad ng wax without cleaning it thoroughly... haha

saka what i usually do, before and after playing my guitar, i rub it with pranela, even without guitar polish.basta maalis lang ung pawis or dust..

Alright, time to revive this thread.  No one seems to have answered too much with regards to the fretboard (mas pogi nga naman pag malinis at makintab yung body), so I dug around... I thought I'd post these links here:

http://www.ibanezrules.com/tech/grunge/grunge_3.htm

http://www.gibson.com/magazines/amplifier/1997/12/tip.html

Alternatives?  For cleaner, a lot recommend naphta lighter fluid, they say water is not good for your wood, one guy said he used alcohol, and one guy said gasoline.  For alternatives to lemon oil, linseed oil seems to be popular, and one post from a foreign board looks promising... olive oil.  Seems we all have our methods!

If you have ebony, you'd have to do some considerable cleaning more often than rosewood.  And if you have maple, you have to be more picky with what you put on, and these methods may not apply.

 :-)

i just got myself the ernie ball guitar polish and i can't think of anything else it is easy to use and it doesn't leaves any strong smell and residues...also i got that those ghs fast fret for cleaning my fret 'n strings like the guitar polish easy to use and as i applied it the frets came alive...bottom line these cleaners can do their job but pricey against those alternatives...yep these alternatives can do their job but     some can do their own hidden damages

I do this method ever since i learned to play the guitar, mas tatagal buhay ng strings mo..

Alcohol then olive oil..

pero im skeptical about those "home remedies" kasi im thinking, ernie ball, since it's a commercial brand, really researched and all. i dunno.
but im not taking chances on oils. im afraid of ipis

UPDATE:  I found some steel wool in the SM supermarkets.  Costs around 40 pesos.

Looks like this:

I used the edge of my pic to scrape off the stubborn green muck accumulated on my fretboard.  Then I used the steel wool.  Really works.

And uh, I tried olive oil.  Left my guitar for one week in my bag, no ipis!  Now my fretboard feels like new.  Rosewood by the way, I wouldn't try it on maple.  PM me for more.
Title: Re: cleaning the guitar

Here's my two cents.
Most cleaning agents use ammonia (or any of its derivatives) as main ingredient mixed with some kind of wax or soap.  MC is a good example.  I think Pledge is also an ammonia based cleaning agent.  And of course, the most popular ammonia-based cleaner of all of them is Windex.  The strong smell of MC is ammonia.  Check the label of your cleaner.
Is ammonia good for guitars?  Here's my fearless opinion - yes and no.  Ammonia is an aromatic compound.  In small concentrations, ammonia is an excellent cleaning agent because it can remove light grease quickly.  But ammonia may fade the tint/color of your guitar finish so be sure to wipe it off quickly.  If the finish of your guitar is urethane or lacquer based, i think ammonia is safe to use.  But to be sure, wipe it off quickly.  Remember Murphy's Law.  NEVER use ammonia-based or alcohol-based cleaning agents on old/vintage guitars - many of these guitars have shellac or special mix of varnish coatings that might be dissolved by these strong agents.
Can you use ammonia sold in Mercury?  I haven't tried it.  But you can experiment by diluting it.  Start with an old furniture, on an obscure part.
How about household ammonia?  Also known as Ammonium Hydroxide, I think you can use it but dilute it first.  Household ammonia sold over the counter has  around 5% to 10% concentration of ammonia.  Still, when experimenting dilute it further first.  It may be illegal to possess large quantities of Ammonium Hydroxide because it is used to produce methamphetamines (crack, shabu, etc.).  Experiment on the proportions suitable to your needs.  By the way, inhaling ammonia can cause dizziness an can be lethal if in high concentrations.  It can trigger asthma attacks.  So don't sniff MC and don't pick your nose after applying MC.    :-D
Is MC just as good as Pledge?  Or should I ask, is Pledge just as good as MC?  No comment.
For waxing, carnauba or carnuba wax is a very tough wax and is good even for leather.  It can give your guitar that extra coat of protection.  It repels water and other liquids effectively.  It's easy to apply but it is tough to remove.  Dirt/Stain under a carnauba wax is difficult to remove.
Is car wax good for guitars?  I don't know and I don't want to try, even the carnauba types.  Car paints are designed to be tough.  Guitar coating/paint is selected and applied taking into consideration the resonating properties of paints and coatings.  I think car wax is too tough for guitars.  I don't know.
What about necks and fretboards?  For bare wood (fretboard) cleaning, I do not think ammonia-based cleaners will do.
So, what do I use for cleaning my guitars?  I use an extra soft baby diaper (not the disposable types) dampened with distilled water (car battery water).  Fresh tap water is hard water with chlorine (bleaching agent).  I don't know if washable nappies are still being sold in department stores but I got mine long time ago.  I just take the time to do that extra wiping for both the body and neck/fretboard, although any kind of soft cloth will do for the fretboard.  No wax or oil.  Since any kind of liquid will seep through the grains of wood, I dread using any kind of oil/wax because they do not evaporate like water.  But I use fine coconut oil (home made clear) on my rosewood fretboards from time to time (once a year or maybe longer) to keep it from being parched.

Cool. Pwede pala lighter fluid. Pero steel wool? Hindi kaya masira yung finish?

I just use it for the fretboard, to remove the tough green gunk accumulated on the edges.  You have to cover up the body, coz when you start working on it, steel dust can fly up to the body, then that could scratch the finish on the body when you try to remove it.

Ayus yan bro.  After steel wool, apply some lemon oil (or olive oil), silky smooth na afterwards, parang bago fretboard mo.  Pero pang-rosewood lang, mind you.  Di pwede sa maple boards.

just be sure to take them all off the wood when u apply wd40... i suggest you soak it in the solution overnight and dry it well, then place it back to your axe

magaling makatanggal ng rust ang wd-40.

kung sa string ko ilagay to?  :? wala kayang epekto sa tunog ng string?  :?

awww i dont think that is a good idea... wd40 will help the rust loosen so it breaks off the corroded thing.. Rusty strings actually means portions of the steel have been corroded thus the expected tone from a newly installed string is way different from a corroded one.. applying wd40 will definitely shave off some rust but the tone of the string as you expect it to sound will entirely be different.. as for the rusty strings, i suggest you replace it with a new set instead..

+100000000 sa fast fret!!!! bangu bangu pa!! :) more than six months sakin di parin ubos!!! sulit ang 300 php..

to remove dirt from the fret wires i used a very fine steel wool

just isolate the fret by using any kind of tape to avoid scratching the fret board then wipe it parallel to the fret wire and you can see the difference hee hee tanggal ung mga brown etc na kung anu man kintab pa

ive done it already it really works

Olive oil pards.  So far so good.  After steel wool, "stripe" each fret (no soaking!), then spread with a cloth.  Fret board like new.   8-)

No need for a guitar polish. I use Pledge before but after some time, you will see swirl marks.

then I discovered.

"For that scratch free cleaning"

P124.75 (1 piece) lang sa Handyman in Robinson's malls

super lambot siya, non-abrasive at hindi mo na kelangan ng additional cleaning agents to get the job done.

I have black guitars and it's a chore to clean the body (I clean my guitars after I play 'em).

After playing, yung sweat stains na naiwan sa finish... TANGGAL AGAD sa isang punasan lang! Look ma, no guitar polish involved!

Unlike kapag planela gamit mo na ilang punaspunas pa para matanggal ung sweat marks sa body... time consuming at baka may maiwan ba na swirl marks! heheheh

I got the idea sa Planet Waves site coz may product rin sila na micro-fiber cloth meant for instrument care...

MICRO-FIBER CLOTH

The Planet Waves Micro-Fiber polishing cloth acts like a magnet for dust, dirt, and oils, and lasts considerably longer than ordinary cloths. Woven from microscopic fibers, the Planet Waves Micro-Fiber Cloth is 10 times finer than silk, up to 30 times finer than cotton, and 100 times finer than a human hair. The fibers are woven into masses of tiny "hooks & loops" which cut through stains, attracting and absorbing dirt, smudges, and microparticles that ordinary cloths cannot reachor remove.
Best of all, the Micro-Fiber polishing cloth needs only minimal polish or no polish at all!

Yung kinuha ko yung may picture ng furniture coz like the guitar, kahoy yun eh. Takot ako magasgas ung guitar ko! heheheh

I just wished I discovered this at an earlier time para naiwasan magkaroon ng swirl marks yung iba kung guitars. haaaaaaaaay!  :|

Effective ba 'to? Any suggestions?

pag flat lang ang finish, no need for other "gloss polishes".. i have a PRS SE Standard na matte lang ang finish, my bro has an Ibanez RG321 na flat black lang din.. hindi talaga sila kikintab, what we use is a 3M microfiber cloth.. effective siya sa pagtanggal ng fingerprints at ibang sweat marks..

3M is a good brand.. meron niyan sa handyman.. forgot the price though..

Mas dumudumi itsura over time.

A bit. Depende sa extent ng kalawang. Pag sobrang grabe, di niya kaya tanggalin totally. WD starts for Water Displacement. It primarily gets the water out, isa sa ingredients ng rust.
