now that I reflect on this, wayne krantz hit the nail on the head.

you have to deconstruct your musical fabric, reject your gods, move to a strange land and adopt an exotic diet.

do that for a couple of years, then revisit your hometown.

if you find yourself still interested in doing so.

WAYNE KRANTZ.

bill frisell's another jazz guitarist with his own vocabulary of phrases.

i like this thread. yes you need to be creative in your own way. as an artist everything will fade out, especially fame and fortune but creativity will be the only reward and fullfillment for us thats leads to what you called leaving a LEGACY. music will never die and i know you guys know that. so in making or choosing your own sound. listen to your heart. show them who you are in your music.don't fall in line man. and always keep in mind that your music will always reflect in who you are. more positive and righteuos you are then your music will follow.
Music is the universal languag!

Ayoko naman ng puro new ideas lang, like any other great masterpieces, everything needs contrast. So ang trip ko new stuff combined with old but great ideas.

two of my fave guitar players have their own "voice"...

1) John McLaughlin

main influence... John Coltrane

2) Carlos Santana

listened to  Dionne Warwick songs  & copies the melodies note for note on his guitah 8-)

when robben ford played for Miles, he was doing mike stern licks whenever it's his turn to solo...
& miles came up to him & said... i didn't hire you to play mike's [gooey brown stuff]... do your own thing :-D

While this is true to a certain extent, madaming elements ang music beyond the notes: You can vary the rhythm, speed up or slow down the tempo, use a ton of effects, layer different tracks on top of each other to harmonize different melodies, use different instruments for a lush sound, etc etc etc.

I kind of agree that most likely, all "appealing" (and even abrasive) chord/note progressions and their variations have been tried already, pero madami pang pwedeng pag-eksperimentuhan sa musika. I've heard people say that music has nothing new and fresh to offer anymore, but I'm still optimistic na meron pa. ;)

i actually like Robben Ford's playing in the album Minor Elegance with Joe Diorio. changed my view of Robben as a jazz guitarist.
