I want to learn how to convert an analog recording studio to a digital recording studio... what equipment do I need to purchase and which equipment I can still use from the old studio.

Anyone here who offers technical expertise about this?

There are 2 ways to go digital, either through modular digital multitracks (MDM's) such as ADAT and various hard disk recorders, the other is via computers. MDMs are almost no-fuss... just turn them on and start recording; in some cases, you can fly in a track into a computer for further editing but this capability is built into higher valued MDMs. Examples of MDMs are the Roland VS series, Fostex VFs and of course, the Alesis ADAT and Tascam DA series.

The computer side of things requires you to choose between pc and mac platforms as well as the recording software and hardware. I can't stress this enough... always design your pc around the software that it will run. All too often we get the pc first then purchase the software later; that is often where the problems begin. Do a lot of research into compatible systems with the software of your choice... and don't even think about building a gaming machine for serious DAW work - the 2 are often incompatible with each other.

M-Audio is quite good. The Delta series uses the Via Envy chipset which is very good in handling audio streams. The A/D converters are AKM, I think, which are usually better than consumer level plus the drivers are very stable but YMMV depending on your system.

Thanks! I already bought the Roland VS-1824CD, I don't know if it's any good. I'm also looking for someone to help me put it together... any ideas? :) I'm not sure what software I would be needing but I really like ProTools so I might go with the Mac. Would you know anyone who provides services to help me put up the studio together again using the Roland VS-1824CD + a new Mac?

Thanks again!

hey newbie here been into home recording for a couple of years now. its great to have this kind of forums where we can talk about our art. kudos onthe mods of this thread!

you from new manila maybe you could drop by my home studio so you could see my gears and maybe i could help you in a way with your questions. im from new manila too. i could help you with setting up your studio and i also use pro tools 7.3 good buy on the roland VS its always nice to start it with the right stuff.

regarding pro tools 7.3 its a very powerful software but it needs a good PC. I use core duo 2 PC i am very satisfied with the performance of my PC when running pro tools and havent encountered problems with it.what sux with pro tools are the plugins. di kagaya ng mga ibang software kung san san mo makukuha sa mga pirated CDs yung mga plugins nila unlike pro tools you may find a hard time looking for plugins na compatible with it.baka may mga users jan na may mga plug ins pa copy hehehe

Ei Guys,, newbie lang.. How about the M-Audio? Nakita ko siya sa isang store and mukang impressive naman siya. any reaction can help?

in my opinion m audio is quite ok. kaso walang pre amps. what i recommend to you is the delta 1010 not the "LT". yun yung rack. i read in a forrum in the states malaki difference ng sound nila. and shampre nakaka takot yung wires nyan kasi baka madaling ma loose or ma hila at least pag rack matibay talaga yun.ok ang m audio for me yung delta 1010 LT nila which is available ngayun mejo mag hahanap ka nga lang ng mga RCA to 1/4" inch na adapters pero sa RCA kasi mejo  may loss yung quality pero ok na din for starters good luck!

ok yung gagawin nyong tutorials kasi maski ako dami ko pang kailangan matutunan hehehe pano nyo ba uumpisahan yung topic ng tutorials nyo?

Aside from MikeP's workshops, there are plans to conduct a beginners workshop on pc recording, mostly dealing with the hardware side of things since this is really where most stumble (while a true artist shouldn't blame his tools, he should have the right tools to begin with). We could start off with a tutorial thread and I'll make it a sticky.

wala po bang sticky na pro audio faqs (yes, i know sinabi ko na to dun sa isang thread, pero mas tama yata kung dito eh  :-D )?

anyway. is a laptop good enough for recording? upgradable naman yung soundcard nya or do i have to devote a desktop computer for recording?

Nice idea on the audio faq sticky, but it seems this thread is somehow evolving into one. But rather than re-invent the wheel, there are sites that give a better explanation on audio technology like tweakheadz.com or even the Bruce A. Miller online mixing courses (the links are in the Educational Material sticky so the faq is kinda covered, albeit via proxy).

Is a laptop good for recording? If it's fast enough and has sufficient ram, yes. But remember, you can't upgrade the cpu and video, and you will need external hard drives for unloading data to. Soundcards can come in pcmcia, usb2 or firewire flavor, but you will have to research your laptop's specs since some chipsets and firewire/usb controller chips don't play well with audio.

okay. thanks sir!

dagdag question sir:

kung isang instrument lang naman ang irerecord ko(ex.: guitar or bass), kailangan ko pa po ba ng amp? o may software na makaka-'tulong' sa akin?

There are simulators that can sound like guitar amps and cabinets. you can record a clean tone can use something like Guitar Rig or Amplitube for amp simulations.

ano po yung DI?

DI stands for "Direct Injection" or "Direct Input" box. From wiki: "A DI unit or DI box is an electronic device that connects a high impedance line level signal that uses an unbalanced cable with a 1/4" phone plug to a low impedance mic level input that uses a balanced cable and XLR connector. For example: connecting an electric guitar through a DI box and then to a mixing console's mic input. It performs level matching, balancing, and either active buffering or passive impedance bridging to minimise noise, distortion, and ground loops. (They do not perform impedance matching.)"

I've been using an ART Tube Studio V3 as a sort of guitar DI; it works very well in this regard. The cheaper ART Tube MP will also do as will the equivalent Behringer unit.

Sir Kit, matanong nga lang. Medyo noob question to.

May plano kami magrecord sa Pipeline sa may Gil Puyat Ave.

Pano po yung recording nun? Ano po yung kasama dun? First time lang kasi namin eh. Pasensya na.
