mas maganda talaga pag may day job ang mga musicians.  tapos gig sa gabi pampaalis ng stress ng day job.

tama ka dun sir. nasasayang din yung mga ibang mga talents natin may mga magagaling din dito sa pinas. ang problema kasi dito in my opinion dapat kasi  profitable music niyo kalimutan na yung talent.

mas maganda talaga pag may day job ang mga musicians.  tapos gig sa gabi pampaalis ng stress ng day job.

paano yung mga tulad ko na call center agent/musician?  i personally consider it a bit of a struggle...but the rewards are quality time spent playing music with your bandmates/friends, occasional gigs, and original compositions.  the money comes from answering the phone to often irate/clueless/dopey customers every night, at yun na yung puhunan naming pambayad sa studio, nagcocover sa gastusin tuwing gig (food, drinks, yosi), pang-GAS, etc.  time is another story all together...

kaya nga kadalasan di tumatagal sa call center industry yung mga musikero.  yes, the money is good, but the opportunities for playing gigs are limited especially when you have little to no control over your schedule...

Mahirap i-compare sa US, dahil doon may huge market ang entertainment industry. In other words, ang madla doon kayang gumastos for entertainment, like concert tickets and records etc.

Dito sa Pinas masyadong limited ang market mo sa Metro Manila. Kumbaga, napaka konti ng tao na may chance gumasta ng salapi para sa production mo.

Numbers game din kasi, ang habol ng mga record companies makabenta ng marami. Hindi natin sila masisisi kasi yun naman ang purpose ng kumpanya, generate profit diba. Kasi kung charity achuchuchu to help young musicians, malamang naging non-profit org na lang sila dito sa pilipinas

So, kaya walang pera dito sa music, is basic supply and demand. Mahina ang demand.

Pero, syempre, that shouldn't stop us from making music, diba? Music started way long before the music industry!!! Tandaan natin yan!!! yahoooooo

If people are more dedicated in creating better songs, they can get rich easily in music.

But alas, people need to work in the daytime.

For me, I'd rather play music than be stuck in a job. If we get a recording deal, I'll finish up school (2 more terms left) then be done with school and jobs forever.

It's hard in the Philippines precisely because of scale.

Even if you can work it to play a chain of clubs...how many clubs are here that pay? Whereas, in a place with more people and a much larger geographic area like the 'States, you can conceivably go tri-state and make a decent living from all the bars and events in the three states.

There's also our economics. Let's face it, people here do not prioritize entertainment, and for good reasons.

I have full respect for people who can say "f*ck it, I'll stick to my music," because I won't - I have bills to pay. On the other hand, after seeing how some musicians end up, the warning there is that maybe some practicality is needed. You may have to accept the fact that you'll have to be in a showband to get decent earnings.

case in point my band. we're from Bacolod

1. we spend money, our money, to play gigs in Cebu and Iloilo. We do this monthly, and a trip usually costs not less than five thousand, and we pull it all out of our own pockets.

2. just last weekend, we scraped all our savings, burned 100 copies of our cd and bought plane tickets to Manila and went there to play bars for FREE. We even ask ourselves how the hell do we recoup the 20,000 peso expense? the best we got was a few rounds of beer. but to hell with it we had fun.

3. we know what were doing is suicidal, its a struggle, but hey we always go home happy after a gig. we treat all gigs special.

its the music and playing for us thats important. we have bills to pay, and for some of my bandmates... mouths to feed. i have my arse to feed to and a mountain of monthly bills to pay

the reality is, being in a band cant 100 percent support someone, unless you are in the level of Bamboo.

anyway being in a band and playing is like a vice for me...... it doesnt matter for me PERSONALLY to go the extra mile to play even for free, its more of a passion much like people go gaga over airsoft or settiing up cars. and my bandmates share the same passion.

but damned it if we get somewhere we're all dumping our day jobs hehehe

Mismo.  If you get famous, and have a good amount of cash coming your way, save it, and kick the day job! But until that happens...you need the day job...

I believe that in the Philippines everything has politics even the music industry. People exploit the talents of very very good bands just to earn a bit of money. I just hope that some day this would all change and we would all have a chance of having our Big Break.

i know there are already bars that cater to call center agents...tipong bukas sila ng 7am.  i know this for a fact because we got an offer to play in such a bar (with good pay too) and the target audience are call center agents.  kaya lang tumanggi kami kasi sobrang aga talaga.  7am tulog pa ang boses ko.
