ok ang tube amp sa metal and all high gain stuff kung sa kanya mo kukunin ang distortion mo.. pero kung sa pedal ka parin magrerely for those high gain needs, useless ang pag gamit ng tube amp, imo..
i disagree
kelangan lang hanapin ang magandang combination ng dirtpedal+tubeamp. and a lot of pedal makers right now (like MI AUDIO, Menatone etc) are making dirtboxes using clean all-tube "platform" amps. Hell just look at all the "Marshall-in-a-box", Mesa-in-a-box" and "Soldano-in-a-box" options out there. Chances are those pedals were tweaked using Blackface Fenders
examples:
crunchbox + clean twinreverb =
crunchbox + clean blackface bassman =
kasi sakin, if i'll get the dist sa amp, i won't be needing high gain pedals.. but hell, to each his own..
But not all tube amps are built for high gain. I love playing metal myself pero a lot of tube amps out there need a bit of help to get into high gain territory.
What some people don't realize is that you can also goose a dirty amp with a maxxed out overdrive. That's how Kirk Hammett did it (TS9/TS808), and that's how Zakk Wylde did it (MXR ZW-OD).
semi-dirty amp examples:
Marshall JCM800 + Goosed tubescreamer / Badmonkey =
Peavey Classic 30 + Bad Monkey / Arion Tubulator =
my 2 cents.
