Honestly, I know jack [gooey brown stuff] when it comes to scales and modes, etc.

If you're like me and you don't have much theoretical knowledge, the way I come up with my lead lines for my band's songs is I listen to the rhythm guitar part where I need to put my fills / licks / solo and then try to "feel" the music and "hear" a melody on top of the rhythm guitar. Then I just look for the notes on my guitar.

If you're talking about improvisation as in coming up with something in an impromptu jam like the blues and jazz guys, then I can't give you any answer. I suck at that big time.  :-D

I can't improvise very good but I guess decent nadin kung icompare sa skills ko dati

I started with the pentatonic scale then hanap ako backing track that fits the scale then random notes lang but always try to resolve to the home note. then when you get a little advanced try to hit the notes of the chord to make it a lil more melodic....ahh yun lang alam ko hehe then all will come in time nalang.

Aside from practicing, Listen. it's hard to come up with licks or lines all by yourself. Daming magagagandang nakaka-inspire or tumatatak na licks and lines na masarap i-appy sa tugtugan.  :-)

Don't memorize Scales, just memorize it's sound/feeling.

For me Instead of memorizing the Scales like Pentatonic, Harmonic minor, Major, etc., I just recall them by it's description like Happy, Dark, Evil, Sunny, Cold, Swimming, Middle Eastern, etc.

Try to compare Rusty Cooley, Jeff Loomis and Stephan Forte. If you like Jeff and Stephan but hate rusty, then you know what I mean.

but that's just me.

as you can see naman po mejo beginner ata yung ts, di ko sure, sorry po haha anyway, so before going sa mga atonal, syncopations, going out of the meter and blah blah blah , always start sa basic :-D dont break the rules yet, break it once na maintindihan mo na siya, pero as you said, iba style mo, kanya kanyang trip, haha! so ts kung anong mag work sayo, edi go haha, nasa sayo naman yan eh, experience  lang talaga haha

Learn the scales BUT instead of always going up and down them, try doing it per string or like per two strings..now your more melodic than shredding...=]

there's a good idea pards hehe

another that i do is follow a basic melody that goes around the progression, then to add variety i just speed up the up/down bits hehe

focus on chord tones.  :-)
Eto.

Ako bahala na kung ano lumabas. There are good lines and there are bad lines pero as long as I'm expressing what I'm feeling at that moment in time I'd be happy with how it turns out. I never plan my solos. Mas exciting saken sumampa sa stage kase even I get surprised with what comes out. And then I review the videos of the gig and I say.. "Good God ang sagwa nun ah.." haha!

It's my answer to the thread title papi. Of course it will not work for everyone nor is it advisable for beginners. One day I just realized I'm both too lazy to prepare and too yabang to be comfortable with being unprepared. There are times it ends up as a train-wreck but, fortunately for me, my bandmates are fine with it. We just want to have fun lang naman hehe.

Kung advise naman kay TS.. Mahirap mag improv without knowledge of at least the basics. I'd say learn the theory first, appreciate how everything affects each other, realize the connection between what we play and what the audience feels as a result of it, then once your comfortable with your knowledge and your skill.. banat!  :-)

Just always.. always.. make sure you're having fun  :-)

feelings! +1 diyan...

First time ko maglead sa isang banda, i actually play bass, then nagshift kami one time na nag semi-acoustic kami, i learned their song on guitar, kinapa ko rin yung mga fills, pero nung di ko nakuha yung adlib, i made my own, after hours of playing it, I already felt the notes, and yung nagawa ko, it made sense naman. :) share lang.
PS the next gig I sucked, full band na, wala ko sa tono.

gawa ka ng sarili mong pattern using the scales at importante kung ano ang nasa puso mo... un ang lalabas na tunog mo at skills.

mas maganda gawa ka ng jam track or download ka ng back tracks para i jam mo mag isa... mahirap kasi kabisado mo lang na wala kang ka jam. kapag may kumpleto instrumento na ang hirap sabayan...

you can choose "feel", "heart", or even "follow the chords"...

learn a scale...Pentatonic, Diatonic, Minor scales...etc...

huwag mo muna pagsabayin pag aralan lahat...

atleast master one scale before going to the next scale lesson...

every scale has there modes...eto ung sinasabing position mo ng box type scale.

learn there shapes and if you have more time try to train your ear to recognize the notes.

learn all the box shapes all through out the fretboard...

memorize runs and licks...

by doing this magkakaruon ka ng idea kung paano mag-construct ng solos of your own...

until they're good enough to produce a sound of there own...

duon ka magkakaruon ng inspiration and drive to be a good guitar player...

there's tons of knowledge kasi kahit sa isang 4 note lick...

repeat the runs and licks as much as you can when you practice...

para ma-perfect mo ung ginagawa mo...

repeatition is the mother of education...

and most important...don't rush things...

do it slowly but surely...

try to make a lead line using 2-3 notes lang.  :-D masaya sya, vary mo kung kelan mo patatagalin yun note/s na yan, mapapansin mo na ang 2-3 notes executed differently (half note, whole note, bend, haluan ng effects etc) parang ang layo na ng nararating. and its fun!

di kelangan ng pabilisan parati to come up with a fantastic lead line (palusot ng isang taong hindi shredder  )

pero try nyo, masaya hehe

Before I always tend to throw in all the licks I know and hope it will fit the song.  So whenever I’m in solo mode my way of thinking is “eto Hendrix, tapos sundan ko ng mala-SRV pag di bumagay tapping, at tapusin ko ng ala Kirk Hammet with matching wah wah at paiyakin ko sa huli”.  And surprisingly it works during my high school days.  :-D

Going to college, a friend of mine thought me to practice the following:
- Improvise using 1 to 4 notes and play with its octaves.
- Sing the notes verbally or mentally when practicing.
- Try practicing different approach using same rhythm pattern.
- Try visualizing a start, climax and ending of a solo.
- Don’t just memorize licks, study its mood and feel.

I’m not a technical player but in my experience studying these made me a better player.

Hope this Help. :-)

play as you are, as you were, as I want you to be... hehe jok lang.

I try to feel the song first. Then I practice the improvisation, so ang kalalabasan is half-written half-improved yung song, jsut to see what notes fit for the solo

Dapat maging comfy ka sa guitar mo, at dapat relaxed ang kamay mo when you shift notes. Don't force yourself to do something you know you're not used to on stage. Dapat i-practice mo muna ang mga scales mo and stretch your fingers out.

I have improvised my own solo over and over at different gigs, but now i'm trying to stay true to what I've recorded. It's always good to come up with a substitute solo so you won't be limited. :D

Right now, I'm trying to come up with a different solo so I can easily bend my solos. :)

When I see my bandmates' hair bobbing up and down with their heads, when I imagine the feeling of being pushed around, kicked down, and physically and mentally abused online and offline, when I see images of battlefields and Viyetnawm and Eyeraq, I get the inspiration.

When I imagine blood coming out of Trey Azagtoth, I get the inspiration.

I am a fcuking wild animal on stage when I get inspired.  Red Horse is the fuel of my creations.

may mga guitarist akong nakikita na parang in-iemulate yung tunog sa bibig habang nagsosolo, parang ginagawa muna niya through voice para alam nya siguro kung pasok ang susunod na note or hindi, parang nakikipagusap sa gitara. or is it just me?

ganyan nga ako dude. kasi, if you will just depend on scales, patterns, etc. You wont be different to other guitarists. kumbaga, yung scales na yan, patterns, etc. yan yung pagkakapantay pantay niyong mga musikero. tapos yung feeling, yung maghihiwahiwalay sa mga musicians. :)

70 % muscle memory

20 % of waking up and realizing you're stuck in "the box" so you experiment with notes outside "the box"

10 % guitar face

melody. speed is useless without the melody.

it's not on the speed of your fingers. it's on the melody that can produce by your fingers.

Been playing for 25 years now. On all the comments above, all are correct just choose your own evil. Friend once told me all those years ago, "Hush, just listen and then play!".

learn basic scales like major, minor, pentatonic, blues.

how to improvise, madali naman matutunan yung techniques. Ang mahirap is writing your own solo, hindi siya madali since it will take time tlaga before you knock out the melodies off your head. But worth din yung effort lalo na pag magaganda phrasing mo. Laglag panty ng mga chicks niyan.
