The Pearl drums with the black rims and lugs look well-plated.  I'm not sure though with long-term usage.

I've always liked the look of black - and the kits that use black hardware look cooler and more modern to me than the ones that use traditional chrome. But are they practical? Is chrome more durable? Will black hardware tend to scratch more? Expert advice would be appreciated!

depende sir kung anong drums. by colored hardware you mean powder coated.

IMO, if the hardware design is a bit plain, mas maganda siya pag black. Pag maraming fancy-shmancy, mga shapes and stuff, chrome.

Good about chrome is, hindi siya namimili ng color. Black doesn't look good in some colors chrome looks good on.

I like black. Sana may black stands din, hehe.

you can have black cymbal stands for cheaper than you think. just buy a regular stand or use or old one and bring it to a powder coater (like versa in mandaluyong). my guesstimate is about less than 100 bucks per stand

Black hardware looks cool, though I agree that they do need to match with certain colors or finishes.

Some drum manufacturers have high-quality, durable powder-coated finishes.  Pearl's black hardware are well-finished.  The Gretsch Vinnie Colaiuta Signature kit in 19 East (http://www.19east.com/) has black hoops and lugs.  Sadly, it already has some chips and scratches.

Personally, I prefer chrome hardware.  I love how it shines under the stage lights, it looks more elegant, and it never goes out of style.  And it seems easier to color-match or coordinate other drums and components that one often adds or replaces, such as steel timbales and snare drums (especially when one has the habit of switching different snare drum models).

If ever I'll have a drumkit with black hardware, I want the rest of the hardware (stands, tripods, rack tubes & components, etc.) to be in black too; not just the drums.  I'm that obsessive-compulsive hehe!   8)

i'm intrigued.
i might be able to whiz by balintawak.
sana madali makita yung powdercoating place.
may cheap fernando piccolo ako try ko ipa-powdercoat ng black yung hardware.
pwede bang ibang kulay ang ipa-powdercoat?
o black lang ang available?
para mas quirky sana.
hehehehehe.

^^^  there's a sample color palette if you drop by their office

versa only does 1 color per day, if you happen to choose a color that's not currently on their oven, you will have to wait (for days) until there is a batch to be done.

i dont know about republic if they only do one color per day.
