What's the difference between drum and bass with house music and other genres of electronica?

listen to the drums...
In an expanding universe, time is on the side of the outcast. Those who once inhabited the suburbs of human contempt find that without changing their address they eventually live in the metropolis

The syncopation on the drums for drum n' bass is more complicated.  It's also takes it's roots from reggae and dub.  Prime examples for dnb would be Goldie and Roni Size.  There are also many subgenres to this classification like darkstep and jump-up to name a couple.

House music is more laid-back and takes it's cue from parent genres like disco, electro, and even krautrock.

Drum n Bass is characterized by the very fast tempos and slices from the "Amen Break" used in its beats. Examples are Squarepusher, London Elecktricity and Pendulum.

drum and bass involves a breakbeat type of pattern...

tug pak, tugpak...

compared to house's

tug tug tug tug

typically revolving around the 160-200 bpm give or take

check out my track Cubes over at www.myspace.com/silverfilter it's actually a free download.

THEN listen to Julienne Groove. notice the BIG difference.

Enjoy the tracks na rin  :-D

some generalizations that may be wrong or right:

electonic music can be broadly classified as:

1. Steady beat

or

2. Broken beat

under steady you have the steady 4/4 kick, as cy said, thats: tug tug tug tug...

here you'll have: house (which has a soulful, earthy quality), techno (which is more minimal, with futuristic/tech themes), trance (which is for people who like to trip out to E at 5am haha- but seriously faster bpm, lots of layers, and "heavenly" vocals)etc etc

under broken you have of course, drum n bass, jungle, breaks, 2 step, dubstep, grime, dancehall, hip-hop etc. here, the kick is, well, broken, eg: tug, pak, k-tug, pak, ktug-tug, pak...

between these two broad groups, there's a lot of cross-pollination (eg big beat, IDM, tech-step, etc etc) and so labels are pretty much meaningless now, and only useful for the sake of convenience in conversation and quick descriptions and for record stores...

if you want  a really funny and yet pretty enlightening guide to the different genres, i highly recc'd you check out ISHKUR'S GUIDE TO ELECTRONIC MUSIC. google it now- its a flash application.

^ lol thx ern haha :-D didnt know u was here sa philmusic :)

@riffscreamer
dnb is faster than house in terms of bpm [dnb=170 house=130]
dnb is focused on drum breakbeats, eg bugs taks bugudaks bug taks
dnb has a heavy emphasis on BASS [hence drum&bass]

@lovecore/silverfilter,
dnb tempo could be 165-179 [give or take 5]
200bpm might be too fast, genres in this range can be considered breakcore, or hardcore gabber

It's because paid software talaga sya. sulit naman sya. If you want something free, download Rebirth :)

You use the midi keyboard to control the synthesizer in your computer.

loops are music phrases that lasts for 4 bars depending on the loop.

Check out FL studio as mentioned. that's where I learned from scratch. I knew nothing back then.
