Ayos.. Mostly from recommendations by Spin/Rollingstone/metacritic/pitchfork. heheh..
Oh btw, I'm listening to some of the songs of THE FIELD..

LOL at the sarcasm.. :-D reminds me of that movie, Little Ms. Sunshine
Seriously, this could be a good start for healthy discussions. Anything is very much welcomed, including the diss, the piss, even sharing quality mp3 sites. just kidding. (the mod might kick me out from here)
Indie_boy: I agree, indie rock is more likely a movement than a "defined" style. No matter how soft or sad bastard the lyrics are, or overly avante garde and prickly loud the distortions are - Indie Rock Music is all about character..to veer away from the status quo...to go D.I.Y style. That's how affirmative it is, and not just sounds and weird sonics.

hehe pwede rin.. going back to the topic, i think u'll have a better understanding of the indie genre if u have new wave influences.. basically kasi sa mga brit bands from C-86 compilations sya nag start.. kasama na rin mga post punk bands dyan.. almost all of them are from U.K.. elemetary pa lang kasi ako nang mamulat ako sa ganito.. I was heavily influenced by my 'chong' brothers.. frustrated musicians kasi sila :-D

I ordered the new New Pornographers album, Challengers, the other week. The special edition limited issue will have a few demos and b-sides for download. It's a four-CD set all in all.
My fave indie bands lately: Spoon (new album to drop tomorrow!) Blonde Redhead Black Rebel Motorcycle Club White Stripes Eux Atres Mommy and Daddy The High Violets Viva Voce The Shins
Anyway, if you're interested in all that stuff, I post mini reviews, concert dates, mp3's, and the occasional film/book/vacation review on my blog:

Cheers!

yup that's included masyado kasing broad eh.. pls, read out..
Indie and genres:
The word "indie" is often used to refer specifically to various genres or sounds in a realm of music that runs parallel to more commercial music. During the 1980s, "indie" was synonymous in Great Britain with jangly guitar pop of the C-86 movement. During the 1990s "indie" music became more expansive and established as a growing number of musicians and fans began seeking alternatives to the mainstream music establishment. Entire genres and sub-genres found representation from new acts, like the Red House Painters, The Sea and Cake, Metric and Polvo. More recently, the word "indie" is sometimes used as a synonym for all "underground" music, similar in the way alternative was used previously before it actually became just a specific genre of corporate, mainstream music in the 90's. Such usages of "indie" may be considered inaccurate for various reasons: for one, stylistic qualities are often not accurately correlated to commercial independence or adherence to indie principles (this is particularly true when a sound becomes popular, its leading exponents are signed by major labels and more success-oriented bands and production teams attempt to imitate the style; this ultimately culminates in commercially driven artists sporting the same stylistic traits the "indie" artists of a year ago had). Secondly, however pervasive any style of music may become at a particular time, it by definition cannot embody all of indie music, as, by indie's nature, there will be indie artists, labels and entire local scenes operating outside of this style and its definitions.

"Indie" by definition has transcended the original term independent. It's not so the case anymore. It's more semantic than functional.
The way one can tell a band is indie is really by looking at how they've paid their dues. They've played their local hip hangouts for ages and followed the DIY aesthetic of punk by putting together their own records and shows and sometimes even doing the promotion themselves through pirate radio and the internet. Out of all that work, they've cultivated a following in their respective local areas. Internet venues such as Myspace have only helped to serve as a network to branch out to other places these bands haven't played yet. Once they've managed to garner a following, they then get signed to a secondary-tier label such as Matador or Sub Pop. After toiling for about a while under those labels, releasing at least one record, they then get signed to one of the majors (Universal, Atlantic, etc) to handle the band's ever-growing complexity in scope, artistically and commercially.
A great example of an indie band done good through the years would be The Flaming Lips.

Their last album, The Life Pursuit was a bit of a grower since it sounds so different from their previous efforts which were more minimalist (at least to me).
If you like Belle & Sebastian, you may also want to try Math & Physics Club, Camera Obscura, and (homegrown in Manila) Apple Orchard.

I attended the Capitol Hill Block Party a couple of weeks ago. It's an annual music festival that showcases some of the best indie rock and hip hop today. It originally showcased only local acts, but has slowly included national touring bands as well. This year, the ones I really enjoyed were performances by Viva Voce, Spoon, and Against Me!
Here are some photos:
Anita Robinson of Viva Voce (http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g145/kontra-bida/DSCF0072.jpg)
Against Me! on the main stage (http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g145/kontra-bida/DSCF0080-1.jpg)
Britt Daniels of Spoon (http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g145/kontra-bida/DSCF0088.jpg)
The next set of shows on my agenda will be at the Bumbershoot Music Festival which will include Viva Voce (again), The Aggrolites, Stars of Track and Field, The Shins, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Ted Leo & The Pharmacists, Kings Of Leon, The Apples In Stereo, and many more. Then about a few days after, it'll again be time to see Canada's own The New Pornographers.

Yup, those were photos I took from about three weeks ago. The week after that show, I got to see The New Pornographers--see photos below.
I was supposed to see The White Stripes last Wednesday, but Meg's physical condition prevented them from touring. It looks like the only show I've got tickets for right now is for The Decemberist's two-night stand at one of the local theaters before year's end. Between now and then, I may go see Film School, Ulrich Schnauss, The Turn-Ons, and The High Violets.

My favorite Indie bands -Minus The Bear (I loved their latest album Planet of Ice (listen to Throwin' Shapes, Double Vision Quest and White Mystery) as well as Menos Del Oso (Pachuca Sunrise, The Fix, Hooray, This Aint A Surfing Movie) and a few tracks from Highly Refined Pirates (Let's Play Guitar in a 5 Guitar Band, Absinthe Party). Any girl will go crazy about their lyrics. The images they paint in their songs are just mind blowing and beautiful. The guitar tapping is tres cool too. I admire their song structures--abrupt changes in time signatures, but the transitions were done seamlessly. Galing.)
-Stars (Amy Millan and Torquil <insert last name here> is a really great vocal tandem. They have the most beautiful songs such as This Charming Man, Your Ex-Lover Is Dead, The Big Fight, Calendar Girl, First Five Times...and many more. They have this very subtle sound, very dreamy and ethereal.) Very relateable din yung songs nila, so it's very easy to remember them.
-Leslie Feist (I know she's not a "band", but a solo artist, but I really really adore her songs. Very simple and melody-driven. Her voice is just so beautiful. When you close your eyes and listen to her voice, say on the song So Sorry or The Limit To Your Love, you feel like you're bathing yourself in this creamy creamy blanket. Basta I couldn't think of the perfect word to describe her voice but creamy. Listen to Armi Millare, you'd describe her voice as "malamig", right? Leslie Feist's voice is goddamn creamy. I love her. Apparently Steve Jobs loves her too, coz she's in the new iPod nano commercial. Check it out on youtube.
An additional trivia: Some members of Stars, Kings of Convenience (another great indie band), Metric, as well as Leslie Feist are members of Broken Social Scene. They're 16 in the band all in all. I find that mighty cool.

I know what you mean. Seattle represent! It's amazing that some of these members used to be in Botch, one of those super-technical mathy-type metal bands. I got to see them last year at the Capitol Hill Block Party. Too bad I'll have to miss their show with The Helio Sequence (another favorite band of mine from Portland, OR) this November. But I think it's worth missing since I'll be visiting for my nephew's binyag. Matt Bayles has since left the band but continues to support them by being their producer. He's also since helmed the mixing boards for Mastodon.
An additional trivia: Some members of Stars, Kings of Convenience (another great indie band), Metric, as well as Leslie Feist are members of Broken Social Scene. They're 16 in the band all in all. I find that mighty cool.
Have you picked up Kevin Drew's new record yet? It was released just recently.
You're welcome to drop by and check my blog as well. I make it a point to post every day anything indie especially stuff that's either based in Seattle or in The Philippines. There's also the odd weird news item, film, book, or TV show that I'd rave about, but it's mostly music:
Looks like the next show that I'm definitely catching is the second night of The Band of Horses performing at The Showbox on Thanksgiving week Tuesday.

RX 93.1 Opens Up the Airwaves to Indie Artists By Jim Ayson Wednesday, 08 September 2004
Indie artists usually find a friendly ear on a few radio stations open to playing their music (NU107 for one), but most stations appear to concentrate on the product being pushed by the major record labels.
We just got word that RX 93.1 FM has now deviated slightly from the contemporary hit-radio (CHR) format focusing on music from the majors and has started a policy of accepting indie material - and playing these on the regular playlists alongside the Britneys and the Outkasts of the world.
According to RX 93.1 DJ Francesca, a program called INDIE GROUND has been started to solicit material from indie artists for playing on the regular all-day playlist (not just on a special time slot).
Francesca also mentions that the station is still looking for indie artists to add to the playlist. For more info, contact her at indie@rx931.com "... or stop by the station at the 17th Floor of Strata 2000, Emerald Ave., Ortigas Center".

Kung may kati kayong makinig ng C86-style na indie rock, pakinggan ninyo ang bagsakan ng The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart.
hey deadwing. ever get to watch pretty girls make graves? or sharks keep moving? lucky lucky lucky!
anywho, we have our very own indie artists such as moscow olympics (http://www.myspace.com/moskva80) and +/- {plus/minus} (2 of them are pinoy :-D)
I've seen PGMG before they broke up. It was at one of the shows at a local all-ages (local gov't sponsored!) venue The Vera Project. Check out post-PGMG band Jaguar Love which a couple of members formed with one of the Blood Brothers. Intense ang bagsakan nila. I've heard of Sharks Keep Moving...can't say I've seen them play though.
I've heard Moscow Olympics through Seattle's KEXP. They had one of their songs on the playlist for a while. I also managed to track down their EP and picked it up by mail order a few months ago. I myself got to see +/- open for Versus (with Fontaine Toups on bass!) at The Crocodile Cafe six years ago. It was one of the best birthday presents I could treat myself to. In fact, I snagged Patrick's copy of the set list they played that night off the stage floor. I may even still have photos of the show somewhere too.
Other Pinoy bands that I've heard are internationally making waves in the fringes (mostly in the indiepop/twee subgenre) include Carnival Park, Sodajerk, The Dorques, and Arigato Hato!
I make it my business to know about the Pinoy scene too even if I'm based overseas since I write a music column for some Pinoy ex-pats.

Those band names remind me of Cocteau Twins songs, a bit nonsensical names/title but can attract people who want to differentiate themselves from the masses :-D

Gimik ulit noong Sabado. Went to see Phoenix and The Soft Pack (the band formerly known as The Muslims) The Soft Pack (their new sound as a band reminds me much of what The Buzzcocks play) (http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g145/kontra-bida/The_soft_pack-1-23-10-1.jpg)

Went record shopping in Manila while on vacation out in The Philippines recently. If you're willing to put in the work, go record shopping at various places in the area. I managed to find two albums that I've enjoyed spinning recently: The Long Blondes' Singles collection and The Wake's Here Comes Everybody.
For those unfamiliar with The Wake, they were part of the set of bands that Joy Division/New Order manager Rob Gretton signed to the Factory label. This band opened for New Order on some of their shows in the UK and sound so very much like them if Bernard Sumner actually sang on-key long enough (strangely though, I enjoy New Order off-key vocals and all). To me, this band was the actual forebear to music being made by the likes of The Radio Dept and The Philippines' own Moscow Olympics.
Read more about The Wake here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wake_%28band%29 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wake_%28band%29)

From what i know, and i dont know much, yung c86 mga indie noon, sa mga banda dun Close Lobster , Soup dragons , Primal scream, Mighty Lemon Drops, Bodines lang talaga ang alam ko.
Eto mga recommended ko, cream of the Crop mga to:
Adorable Nine ways to Sunday The Ocean Blue - one of my fave Riverside - eto, ang lupit neto The Church - especially the HEYDAY album Railway Children The Chameleons - medyo darkwave to Stone Roses - madchester/baggy tunog nila Inspiral Carpets - madchester din
Marami pa pero yung iba kase medyo sikat kaya parang hindi na indie lol, tulad ng my bloody V, lush, ride, slowdive - i think gaze ang mga to

Sensitive ang issue na to kasi its very open for interpretation depending on the people you're asking. Ang "indie" nga nagkaron na rin ng maraming sub-labels(post-punk, college rock/alternative, jangle pop, twee, lo-fi, shoegaze, britpop, early grunge, early post-hardcore/emo, post-punk revival, etc.)... at unti-unting nagevolve eto into a genre because it is celebrated by like-minded people and small record labels(so they are signed by an independent record company, hindi big/popular label kaya limited ang means of distribution) with the DIY ethos and whose attitude are mainly to be against the typical lifestyle(sex, drugs and rock n' roll) and sound of corporate cock-rock. Sobrang "off" siya sa mainstream rock kaya nagstart siya sa small record labels say Factory Records(think Joy Division, etc.), Creation Records, Rough Trade Records(think The Smiths, etc.), Matador(think Pavement, etc.), Sub-pop(think Mudhoney, early Nirvana, The Shins, etc.), Dischord(think Fugazi, etc.), local - Terno Recordings (think Up Dharma Down, Radioactive Sago)...nung tumagal ang mga bands na influenced by these artists on different umbrellas naging "indie" na rin ang sound kasi eto mga main influences nila e. Nagrrockout sila not for the sake of wanking on their instruments but to create "new sounds"(think Velvet Underground, The Cure, Sonic Youth, Radiohead, Minus the Bear, Wilco, Arcade Fire) and may not necessarily be heavy or dark and evil...so mapa-independent signed man sila or mainstream(think Sandwich), yung essence ng indie naging part na ng music nila. Kaya di ka makakita ng pointy Ibanez or BC Rich guitars sa set nila or topless groupies. Nowadays, indie bands play in cool-organized productions and small intimate venues(say Saguijo) and they're physically identified with the hipster look, cool retro or offset guitars, re-emerged early 90s plaid tops or may hawak-hawak na Vinyl (joke joke joke) :-D ...bottomline: mas poging punk rock!

A lot of people also forget that mbv was in a 20+ year gestation period. If anything, this album is seemingly a bridge to what the band is supposed to sound like in the 21st century. The last two songs were definitely sequenced to end the album to mark out what they plan on sounding like over the next few years.
I just hope a follow-up isn't another 20+ year long wait. I hold hope for that the way I'm optimistic for a new Portishead album.

Also, Richard, cover tayo You Justify My Life ng Pearlfishers! About the Radio Dept., I heard they were cool guys but I didn't have too much fun nung set nila.

^ ah oo matagal na yung album ng The Camerawalls. Binibenta dati sa Sarabia sa loob ng SC sa UP Diliman yung first edition ng albums. Sarabia ata kasi yung isang member(drummer I think).

Later on, umalis/inalis (not sure w/c) si drummer kaya na-pull out din yung mga albums nila. Yung Gentle Isolation at Turbo Goth from Lilystars ayos din.
I dont think Astrovision have their albums pero try mo din sir icheck sa kanila :-)

yep. mbv is a bit like loveless but personally, loveless is still better than mbv. ecstasy and wine is the album closer to isn't anything. more upbeat and grit.

You guys should try contacting them sa fb. :) 600php per hour lang yung multi-track recording nila. :)

hindi man indie 'rock', pero sino Club 8 fans dito?
i love club 8 also. i have all their albums in assortment of cassette tapes, cds and vinyl. i saw their concert last may 2010 here in cebu. i think there were only 40+ people. the venue was very intimate. there was no stage so we could literally hold karolina and johan if we wish to but we didn't. :-D. after the concert, i bought their club 8- club 8 album in vinyl format and had johan and karolina autograph it. hopefully this would cost a fortune after 30 years. hahaha!
imho, i think they are still an indie band with sub genre of twee pop.
try listening to the legends also. it is johan's sideband. they sound like shoegaze/dreampop type.

Great stuff you have there sir!! :)
Even here in SMX MOA back then, the show wasn't like the usual big bands play. It was quite intimate too though the audience was larger than in Cebu's Its better off that way with their music IMO.

the band of Club 8 that night is a band called The Sweet Serenades. (
).
got to chat with them. they say that this was the biggest stage they've ever been too (even for Club 8). seemed like the indie scene there in Sweden is a lot like the indie scene here. kala ko sikat sila dun or respetado. sabi nila Swedish Idols and Pop rin napapansin sa kanila. and all the while I thought Sweden is really a great place for indiepop. same dynamics of the music business din pala.
love the Legends. noise pop goodness. was not much into the People's record. They have a new record out. haven't heard all the albums, but it seems it's better.

actually I get alot of info tru the web right now ! you are correct on record labels and their artist.. i just started old punk hardcore scene .pistols, circle jerks ,minor threat ,TRC label, velvet underground in 1990 till glam gnr then grunge came in ...until i heard nirvana ,sonic youth (dirty) dinosaur jr (where u been?) in tapes. i want to be a non conformist on music!I feel renewed and enlightened on art   ...keep on buying magazines like magnet, alt press, uncut from a booksale . just to be updated, because mtv is way cool that time...locally no information on the bands you dig in......madchester/manchester music? is that a rival of STONE ROSES,joy division, and The smiths? K records i figure that tatoo of kurt coban is K records ....i figured that record labels on band i like 4ad because of cocteau twins ( started )- treasure album beggars banquet label . , creation record bands MBV or alan, mc gee bands , Shoegaze bands adorable, ride, slowdive,,boo radlyes, etc., here are some list of genre that i like on lofi -BEAT HAPENNINGS,sebadoh ,scottish -POPSICLE, norwegian -minimalist pop kings of convenienced.on the local scene its hard for me to get an indie album bec I am a promdi :-( indie scene is at the metro .. :-(
I usually prefer vintage guitar in any kind not until I saw OFFSETS blew my mind and become frustrated -not common...:mrgreen:

woohoo! there ya go Beat Happening is the [gooey brown stuff] man...though i prefer their later, more polished sound. also listen to some Vinnie Reily, Keith Levene, Rowland S. Howard, Television and Fugazi for some angular ear-stab...also listen to the sound from that essential C86 compilation then later to familiar sounds picked by Sarah records... listen to the folky, melodic with subtle wash of shoegaze... :))
im not a big fan(more of corgan ako in the 90s)of kurt cobain but his influences and taste of gear is reall good and very "indie"...no wonder he killed himself because he was marketed as a mainstream commodity

Brad Laner of Medicine must have realized that Kevin Shields was working on a new record. Medicine, America's answer to My Bloody Valentine, released a new record entitled To The Happy Few. Like the tangerine in the album cover, it's tart and sweet at the same time.

On December 5, 2008, Dirty On Purpose posted a blog through their MySpace stating "...we're going our separate ways". They said they weren't interested in recording another album, but are still making music. The band went on to say that their tour with A Place To Bury Strangers will be their last saying, "...we thought it was an appropriate way to wind things down and say goodbye to our friends and fans."

Haha! It felt that way when I first gave MBV or Sonic Youth a spin. Back in the day, the local radio used to be my go-to music mainstay. I never really lurked the internet so I had no ways of getting hold of bands like Swirlies and Big Black, probably. Listening to music that has so much creativity or at least something you haven't heard before could stir a different kind of elation in you. It felt great. :-D
