Ahh, SoTW is... well basically put, a competition where tags (which are often called 'signatures' on some other forums) against competing tags. Mostly circling around a specific theme for the week or month, hence SoTW for Signature of The Week / Month.

Ngayong week Bleach Arrancar ang theme. Hirap maghanap ng renders / stocks to use, walang magaganda. Pero nakakita rin naman, pahirapan nga lang. ><

DIGITAL PAINTING / 3D GRAPHIC DESIGNS / DIGITAL ARTS / PHOTOSHOP

Hi there!
3D nowadays is not just the future of graphics but it's the present and will continuously dominate movie, advertisement, graphic industries.
If you're interested in 3D please feel free to ask everything about it here!

So first, ask yourself what industry would you want to be into.
   Game industry?
   Advertisement or Broadcasting industry?
   Artistry
   Movie industry?
   or just a hobbyist?

what You need:
1. 3D Graphics Software that can Model, Animate, Render like:
   Maya
   3DS Max
   or Softimage.

Originally these 3 were in competition with each other. But now, they have been acquired, owned, and developed by the monster AUTODESK.
If you're gonna ask me what would I recommend, I would say you try it all for you to see the
difference (you can download trial version anyway), whatever you find yourself comfortable using with.
All of those softwares are as complex as each other and can do whatever the other one can do.
So if anyone says, Maya is better than the two or vice versa, believe me, same company developed those softwares so what do you think the difference would be?
The difference is in the process of doing things, and ofcourse Graphical User Interface and their naming convention.
3 years ago when I started, I used 3DS Max, then I tried Maya, then shifted to Softimage.

Cinema4D is the present's fastest renderer. Commonly used for Broadcasting, used in natgeo, discovery, bbc, cnn. Etc.
Blender is a freeware, originally designed for Linux but they made it available for Windows and Mac.

2.  Image Editing software like:
Photoshop, Lots of image editing softwares out there, but this one rocks the market hard.
You gonna need this to edit Texture of your 3D model. 3D Texture includes, color, texture, bump. etc.,

3.  If you want to design high detailed non-animated model you need:
   Mudbox by Autodesk
   or ZBrush

These two softwares allows you to do "3D Sculpting and painting". Imagine yourself being an sculptor using a computer, Way cool!

4.  You gonna need a decent Pen tab for sculpting your character and painting texture.

5.  PC, hehe! You can't do 3D without this, hahaha! Faster of course the better. High GPU, CPU. I recommend using 64Bit version of operating system so that you can use 8GB to 16GB of RAM.

These are the process the you need to know and understand.
1. 3D Modeling --> where you model a character, object etc.
2. 3D Texturing --> where you add detail after you model
3. Rigging --> preparing your model to be animated, like putting some Bones/Joints on your character and having controls over it.
4. Lighting --> Like in photography, light makes your image interesting. In 3D you can control the Light yourself.
5. Rendering --> This one usually takes a long time, even on fast computers. Why? Because software you are using is calculating the color, detail, lights, shadows of each pixel of the image.

Below are my 3D pics, hehehe! One of my dreams as a child is to become a superhero or an angel! Something that took me about a month and a half(per model) to finish.

Correction, "software" is a mass noun.  3D's been "in" for the longest time, but I actually urge people to go back to basics and not rely too much on 3D and/or digitally generated images..

@matanglawin --> Ako naman, I urged those artists to go 3D or Digital!  :-) Malaki matutulong nito para sa kanila knowing that Filipinos are really creative. And if we don't use technology even in arts, talagang mahuhuli na tayo sa trend.
Here in the Philippines 3D is just in its baby age. In other countries, Yup matagal na nila gamit and 3D, dito bihira pa lang. So I encourage everyone to use computer to produce graphics! Know it! It's fun!  :-D

Yeah.  Skillwise, people should get as much as they can. I was a forerunner and pioneer in digital layout and design and was actually a pioneer with the use of PDF.  So I know the advantages of computer-based graphics.

But, I guess you weren't a member of the workforce back when the "industry" as a whole was plagued with power outages.  Only those who knew the traditional ways were able to survive and present to client.

What use is your 3D skill, if you don't have the tool.  With pencil and paper, you can still get a job.  Also, REAL art is in what the hands can actually do without a software crutch.  Can you draw that angel by hand as well?  What more is that other than digital data?  Real art appreciate over time.  Digital doesn't.

Same as Photography.  I hear too many a "digital photographer" saying "we'll fix it in Photoshop, and you'll know that person has no knowledge in film.

Also, 3D is NOT NEW here in the Philippines (hence, was "in" for the longest time)  One of the premier 3D gaming companies is based here in the Philippines as of 5 years or so ago.  And the first 3D commercial was done 10 years ago.  You were probably not just looking hard enough.

@matanglawin

So what's the point dude? People who read this post know that without computer, there's no Computer Graphics. Hehe! So expected naman nila siguro yun noh? :?

I am not a member of anything regarding 3d cg (I just hope I could be one someday.. hehe), I am just a hobbyist who explore my ideas regarding this matter. And I don't have anything to say about traditional ways of doing things, but most of the offices today have power generators and UPS. So power outages is quite inexcusable to not learn new ways, except if natural disaster occurs.

People who wants 3D need tools of course. Can you do art without tools? Can you be a Photographer without a camera? or a sketch artist without papers, pencils, coloring tools or whatever? Hehe.. I am not comparing the traditional art from the modern day computer generated graphic design, because it will not make any sense. CG ideas came from the traditional art. And if you're asking if I can draw this angel by hand, before I start creating a model, I sketch all my ideas in a paper until it becomes clear to me. So it's really an advantage but not required for those who want to learn this to have a drawing background so that it would be easier for them to gather their ideas.  :-D

And about digital photography and photshop, hehe.. You can't stop it, a lot of amateurs and even pros love it! it's worldwide. Those 2 things opened up people's eyes that they could do things a lot easier, is not cheating, it's practicality. And some who tried it don't want to go back again to the original way, but still
Some people prefer the traditional way of doing things, it's cool.

Yes 3D gaming companies are here, but other countries benefit from those companies(outsourcing) rather than us filipinos, in fact only few filipinos know that such things exist.
Again I don't want to compare things from what they are way back decade ago, but Technology is growing, art needs technology, Artist needs technology. By the way, 3D is a Real art. Why naman hindi for you? Hehe!

And if you don't want Computer graphics, it's up to you dude.   But for us to be effective and be in the trend we really must go further and explore new ways( or not so new ways) of doing things. I'm not here to contest your skills and knowledge. I would just like to help those people who want to learn this and not to showcase my ability but to inspire them on what they can do, so that's why I created this post.  :-) Anyways, peace to all!   :-)

Who said anything about stopping computer graphics or not learning computer skills?   Did you miss the part where I mentioned I was a pioneer in digital design here in the Philippines?

The point is, KNOW THE BASICS first.

Do you know how to draw by hand?  Based on your, er, samples, you don't know much about lighting dynamics. Your images look flat.  The shadows on the floor are incorrect, compared to the shadows on the legs.  You relied too much on the default settings of the software.  It looks as if you used templates and smacked textures on them.

3D or 2D computer graphics is NOT real art (in the context that it is made by virtual means).  It's art partly because of the skill involved in it, but, there's no intrinsic VALUE.  You can't print your digital art and sell it like one would an original Picasso, can you?  Is it still art if the computer is shut down?  Sure, one can make a bundle of money knowing 3D graphics, but it's mostly for commercial use.

Also, to differentiate, real 3D artists do know traditional art before going into 3D, so they know the value of knowing the basic skills of hand-drawn art and know how color and light dynamics work.

Also, having generators and UPS is such a poor excuse for not knowing the basics.  Ten years or so ago, there were people who said print will die.

It didn't.  Because, no computer can beat the true value of a REAL book.
