Your Long Term Goal as a Drummer?
« on: November 23, 2006, 09:30:45 AM »
Lately, I've been discussing my long term goals and visions as a drummer/musician with my wife. She just answered "why not?".  What's it about? I'm gonna reveal mine sometime this month after I finish the draft. Meanwhile may I know what's yours?

To start off:10 years from now I'm gonna be...

To snort cocaine and make out with groupies on our band's very own jet plane (and have my acrylic kit on the other jet plane).

Hehe... seriously, long term goal ko, to record highly-recommended albums, and write instant classics.

to continue to do what i love regardless of musical trends and marketability. to not be chained to corporate contracts and to have total and complete artistic freedom...

Ten years before, my band plays at Club Dredd. Nobody in the band thought of becoming "somebody" on the music scene, neither I despite the fact that I have a close relative who's into music business.
I didnt own a complete drumkit either. All I have was a pearl piccolo snare, a Lazer twin peds, and a Zildjian china boy...and a few pair of sticks, of course!
I now have a complete set of drums but without any friends to jam with..But I play everyday..It's a "serious hobby" I guess.
Now, how do I foresee myself as a drummer in the next ten years?....I dont really know. I just hope to become an all-around improviser. A true artist-drummer-musician with a style and sound I can call my own..A source of inspiration to everyone, just like our idols today. :-)

Ten years from now, I hope that I'll still be able to play drums professionally.  And I'll simply continue on improving and developing my drumming and musicianship.

My dream is to become a successful professional drummer and recording artist.  I hope that my band would already be successful by that time - making albums, having big shows here and overseas, be able to touch lives through our music...  There are some drummers who wish to succeed as a sessionist, as a byahero, etc...  As a drummer, I want to succeed by performing long-term with a band or musical group.

I would also love to do musical projects on the side, like a fusion group or a tribute band, or do sessions for other great artists.  It would also be great if I would be able to have some product endorsements, which can be helpful to my career.

I don't know yet if I could become a credible drum teacher.  So far, the least that I can do is share what I know through drum workshops and clinics.  That's something that I can also do on the side.

And ten years from now, I'll be in my mid-30's; and I'll probably have my own family by that time.  Which is why I need to work hard these coming years.  And it would be a huge blessing if I would be able to make it as a full-time professional musician.  I'm already on my 8th year as a pro musicians and on my 4th year as a full-time pro, and still surviving haha...  Only God knows if I'm destined to succeed as a musician.

Ok guys, thank you for sharing your thoughts and goals. I think it's about time to reveal out mine after sorting out my own thoughts about this topic.

Nagsimula ito 4-5 years agonung may tinuruan akong bata from an orphanage from PQUE na magdrums. His name is Oliver. He's the beneficiary of one of the RICHEST families in Makati. He's so really willing to learn that he has to travel from Pque to Sta. Mesa twice a week para lang maglessons at practice with me. Na-touch din ako sa bata dahil sa storya ng buhay nya. Higit sa lahat desidido talaga mag drums. Sya na ang last student ko na "bayad" ang lessons.

Anyway, I've already sought answers as to what would I love to do in ten years. I'm gonna start a drum/percussion school! But this would be a non formal/curriculum school. And most of all MY SCHOOL WOULD BE FREE for the less fortunate kabataan natin dyan sa Pilipinas. I'm planning to have a small area of my future house in Cainta dedicated for this purpose. I'm gonna finance this project personally but would be glad to have some sponsors too. Medyo madami na rin kasi akong nakita, natrain, na-coach na young aspiring musicians that simply can't afford the instrument(not even sticks!) pero sobrang talented at potential. My future school will not be designed/built up to compete with other "BIG" music/drum schools but I'll try my best to give the greatest music training to those who can't afford it. My main  focus for this school will be discipline, freedom, creativity and appreciation.

Of course I've got some personal plans too like having a baby next year! Hopefully maging successful. Wish me luck guys and gals! :)

I don't know if I'm gonna be able to pursue this in 10 years but I'm gonna give it all I've got. Maybe I could use some help and support from you guys in 10 years? Maybe not financially but at least some moral? :)

Lemme know what you think guys... I'll be taking donations of both cash, cheque and used drumming equipment in 10 years. (Just kidding but I won't mind!) Thank you!

Hey bro!  That's a great dream.  Anything positive for the drumming community and for good causes in general, is always great & is worth supporting.  Go for it!  I would love to give support.  8-)
